English: An axial flux motor is also known as axial gap motor or pancake motor. The rotor is a thin disk running in an axial gap that has a magnetic field with the direction parallel to the axis. The advantage is a short motor body. This design is used with some types of DC motors.

Permanent magnet DC motor: Brushed DC motor with self supporting aluminium or copper loops rotor disk in a stator with permanent magnetic field (lynch motor). Due to the wide disk and the light rotor, the motor has high torque and is fast running up and stopping.
Shunt DC motor: As before, but the static magnetic field is generated by DC coils in the stator.
Brushless DC electric motor: The rotor disk is made of a permanent magnet with alternating magnetic poles on the surface. A moving magnetic field is built by several coils in the stator that are controlled by an electric circuit. Therefore it is also called electronically commutated motor or synchronous motor.

Deutsch: Ein Scheibenläufermotor ist ein flacher Gleichstrommotor mit kurzer Achse. Der Rotor ist scheibenförmig und läuft in einem Schlitz, dessen Magnetfeld parallel zur Achse verläuft. Sein Vorteil ist kein kurzes Motorgehäuse. Dieser Aufbau wird von einigen Gleichspannungsmaschinentypen verwendet.

Permanentmagnetmotor: Eine dünne selbsttragende Rotorscheibe mit Leiterschleifen aus Aluminium oder Kupfer läuft in einem engen Schlitz. Das Magnetfeld im Stator wird durch Permanentmagnete erzeugt (Lynch Motor, nach seinem Erfinder). Der breite, aber leichte Rotor bringt viel Drehmoment und lässt den Motor schnell starten und schnell stoppen.
Nebenschlussmaschine: Wie oben, nur wird das statische Magnetfeld im Stator durch mit Gleichstrom durchflossene Spulen erzeugt.
Bürstenloser Gleichstrommotor: Die Rotorscheibe besteht aus einem Permanentmagneten mit wechselnden Polen auf der Scheibenoberfläche. Das Wechselfeld wird von Spulen im Stator erzeugt, die von einer Elektronik gesteuert werden. Es ist ein elektronisch kommutierter Motor. Der Rotor folgt dem erzeugten Wechselfeld ähnlich einem Synchronmotor.
