Scherrzither, also called Kratzzither or Schlagzither, is an ancient rural stringed instrument, and still used today in the alpine folk music. In particular, the interaction with the Scherrzither in the Allgäu , maintained in the neighboring Vorarlberg and Tyrol area, as well as in Upper Bavaria.
There are various local names for the instrument, such as Zwecklzither in Vorarlberg, or Scharr in Werdenfelser Land. In northern Germany and parts of Scandinavia, the appropriate instrument is called Hummel.
