Hallo

Hallo, please stop cropping images by Brogi. The signature in the images is an importantn part in the vexed quaestion of authorship of these 100 years old images. In other words, caption is an integral part of the image, it is printed on the very photography, not added aftetrwards. You are deleting detail from the images. Thanks #REDIRECT Insert text

Cropping unwelcome

hi, please don't crop images by Tetraktys. This one (Image:Martino-constituição-MHN.jpg) has a frame of historical value since it shows the coat of arms of the Brazilian Empire. i have also posted some other pics with frames and i hope they stay framed. if you wish cropped versions it's ok, but then please upload them as another file. thanks tetraktys (talk) 11:14, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

#What if Cropbot causes problems?. Greetings, --Luxo 17:08, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Couple of suggestions

First, when I go here, it's a bit of a dead end. There should be a link back to User:Cropbot or something.

Second, isn't it possible to upload the crop as a new file, in cases where a crop is desirable but you don't want to discard to uncropped version? Could this be added? Richard001 (talk) 05:46, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Richard001. First, yes I could make a link there :)
Second, thats already possible. Under the "Edit summary" field is a checkbox "overwrite actual file". remove the check, then you can enter a new file name. Greetings, --Luxo 16:18, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh, Hi Luxo. I just figured this out today myself when I looked at the 'overwrite' checkbox, wondering what happened if I didn't overwrite. A couple more ideas: is it possible to allow dragging in any direction, not just downwards and to the right? Also, I find the screen that says
"Login
login successful!
> Next"
a bit pointless. It would probably be better if you just got taken straight to the next one (where you select the image) if possible. Richard001 (talk) 06:35, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
allow dragging in any direction is not easy, that's a very complicated javascript. But I will look what I can do, probably I find a solution. --Luxo 16:43, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
You seem to have solved it, very nice. I'm getting some weird file names now though. It tells me that it's a 'bad name', but actually uploads under the name give with a '-', e.g. File:-Red-capped Robin-chat (Cossypha natalensis) on tap, cropped close-up.jpg. Do you know why it might be doing this? Could it be the new 'file:' rather than 'image:' prefix?

And another: File:-Capped Wheatear (Oenanthe pileata) on ground, close-up.jpg. I get the error message

'Bad title

The requested page title was invalid, empty, or an incorrectly linked inter-language or inter-wiki title. It may contain one or more characters which cannot be used in titles.

Return to Main Page.'

I used the file's original name with ", close-up" added, though I doubt this detail is important. Richard001 (talk) 02:00, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

TUSC @ Cropbot (german)

Moin Luxo! Beim Cropbot bekomme ich immer die Meldung "username or password not correct. It seems that you don't have a TUSC account.".

It seems that you don't have a TUSC account?--Luxo 20:15, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
--Nyks (talk) 16:58, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Es funktioniert wieder. Grund des Unterbruchs ist da zu finden. Gruss--Luxo 20:07, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

lossless cropping

Hi Luxo, does lossless cropping leave more or less than the user selected? --Flominator (talk) 19:24, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Gruss, --Luxo 19:31, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

wrong recognition filenames

Hi,

it seems cropbot does not recognize filenames correctly sometimes. In http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bart_de_graaff.JPG it did not recognize the + in the filename, and omitted it totally (original: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bart_de_graaf_%2B_monique_knol.JPG ). Effeietsanders (talk) 13:48, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

User:Cropbot#What_if_Cropbot_causes_problems.3F--Luxo 20:05, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Well ok I see that problem. I'll make a reupload-block fpr Bundesarchiv-images. Greetings--Luxo 20:20, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Done with r204. Reupload of Bundesarchiv images ist not possible anymore. Greetings,--Luxo 20:38, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Well but if I read Commons_talk:Bundesarchiv/Archiv_1#Watermarks_.2F_Captions cropping is welcome. I've reverted my block. Greetings,--Luxo 20:54, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Please re-revert the block. The discussion you read was in 2008. The subject of half-automated cropping and overwriting of the Bundesarchiv files is intensely discussed in de:wp now again - The dissent could be solved easily with allowing cropbot only to reupload Bundesarchiv images with a new filename such as (filename)-cropped.jpg. Could he be trained that way? Greetings, --Joyborg (talk) 09:25, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
continue there...--Luxo 21:27, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Who crops my pictures?

I certainly don't want my uploaded pictures croped. Can this be stopped and reverted? --Holger rix (talk) 13:39, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

If you look e.g. at File:Mehmke-Steingrab-2-a.jpg#filehistory, you see that User:Finavon has cropped your file(s). Cropbot shows you in every edit which user operates the bot, look with this user if you have a problem with the edits. greetings,--Luxo 18:26, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Ressourcenverbrauch und Genauigkeit

Hallo Luxo, nettes Tool! Allerdings:

Cropping prints

Prints, engravings and etchings are properly presented with their border around them. That is the way it is done. However, some wikipedia editors may prefer to use cropped versions in some contexts. Please retain the uncropped version of every print, drawing, etching etc that you crop. Please return to any such artworks that you have cropped and return the borders to them. Amandajm (talk) 00:24, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Hello Amandajm, the cropbot is only a tool used by individual users and it does not do anything automatically - like a graphics program on your computer. Users can select between creating a new file with the cropped version or uploading the crop as a new file version.
Please look in the file history which user operated the bot; then ask this user. He was the one who made the settings, executed and is responsible.
Example: File:Autobuskaliszf.jpeg: it was cropped by User:Yarl (see in the file history at the bottom of the page). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:35, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

More croppes from one image

Whould it be possible to do more cropps from one image please. There are files on commons, which needs more croppes. And even the function of rotation would help. Looks on this file, and there are more of them.--Juan de Vojníkov (talk) 12:55, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Maybe a first help:
Rotating of fractions of 90° is not that easy - but this is needed here. Best use GIMP (or another image manipulation program) to crop and rotate exactly and then upload using derivativeFX. If you like me to, I can cut this image into pieces. ;)
If you just need several crops, you can just hit the back button in crop bot (if I remember correctly) or simply use it repeatedly. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 17:36, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

OK. So it would be better to do this in GIMP and than upload it via Commonist. DerivativeFX look unfriendly for me.--Juan de Vojníkov (talk) 09:35, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Yes. DerivativeFX is just one possibility to upload. When using other tools, make sure that you use the original license and give a link to the original file in the "source=" field. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:49, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Double Upload

There is always double upload of cropped image with this bot, please resolve File:Danaid Eggfly.jpg & File:Tailed Jay Bangalore.jpg --...Captain......Tälk tö me 04:37, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

I am nearly to 100% sure that this is not a fault of Cropbot. It was nearly surely the operating users' (User:Captainofhope) fault. See the time spam between the reuploads? 1 min in your 1st example, 3 mins in your 2nd example. If it was a fault of the bot the double upload would typically be right after the first but not that late and not with varying wait time.
Probably he used the "back" button of his browser and hit again on "ok, upload". Please ask this user. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:55, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
User itself written this error, as i am 100% sure that i didnt hit the back button, I cropped first image, then clicked the upload button 1 time, and wait for sometime and the browser keep on showing the rotating progress bar...I checked the file page using another tab, then realize that it was a double upload, Immediately closed all windows and tried with another image, again it made the same mistake, I was using Google Chrome...please have a look at this error...is it a browser crash..??? ...Captain......Tälk tö me 19:31, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

EXIF is killed (at least when cropping lossless)

Feature request/bug: EXIF is killed (at least when cropping lossless). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:23, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm seconding this. Adding "-copy all" (for EXIF & image comments) and "-optimize" to Jpegtran's command line options would be a simple but very beneficial improvement. —Quibik (talk) 17:46, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
@Luxo: It looks like you "fixed" this at some point but it wasn't noted here.
Request: Please create/maintain a fork of cropbot (without this fix) that just removes exif data from photos? There's still a call for exif location data removal on some of the photos mentioned atCommons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive_45#Privacy --Elvey (talk) 03:06, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Copying Flickrreview tags

Please modify your bot so it does not copy flickrreview tags. These new uploads are detected by the Flickrreview bot as "Images never editted by their reviewer" and placed here. The old tags should either be removed during the reupload process or a new review should be requested by placing a blank {{Flickrreview}} tag. --Denniss (talk) 19:22, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Bump, this is still an issue and needs fixing. --Denniss (talk) 13:08, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your help, but can you please remove any of my uploads from this bots scan? The images I upload I intentionally do with borders (as they appear in publication), plus the first one I listed removed a significant amount. - Theornamentalist (talk) 04:02, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Problem with special character

Hello,

Cropbot does'nt work when the name of the file contain this character : "

Example : test to cropt this file : File:Alicja Dąbrowska w spektaklu "Ccy-Witkac-Y".jpg

Can you resolve it ?

Thanks !

A request for a more specific edit summary

Hello! Great tool! Have a look at this edit. I suppose the reason the cropped image is larger than the original is becuase the user cropped exactly instead of losslessly? Would it be possible to have cropbot specify in the edit summary "cropped exactly" or "cropped exactly"? If it is the users themselves who write the summaries, can then perhaps cropbot suggest an appropriate edit summary? --Bensin (talk) 02:00, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Good idea, yes. The user can edit the edit summary - "cropped" is the default text. The image you've linked to was apparently lossy cropped - yes. Lossless cropped images are never bigger. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:10, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
... so my suggestion is that the tool propose either "cropped exactly" or "cropped exactly" as the summary, depending on what action the user took, but also allow the user to modify the summary. --Bensin (talk) 17:05, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
I would suggest "cropped exactly (lossy)" or "cropped (lossless)". We do should not mention "non exactly" at the lossless mode since it also can be exact - if the raster just matches the desired crop line. That can be controlled in the preview. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:37, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Wow! "'cropped exactly' or 'cropped exactly'" Could my last two comments have been more ambiguous? :-) I agree with Saibo's suggestion. --Bensin (talk) 05:17, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Lotje ʘ‿ʘ (talk) 13:06, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Several cropped images not appearing

Is this a caching issue? Finavon (talk) 13:08, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

All are from geograph and named in the format "File:title - geograph.org.uk - number.jpg". Other crops seem to work. I have manually cropped the current batch. Finavon (talk) 14:52, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Cropbot removes {{Remove border}}. It would help IMHO, if it would also remove Category:Images with borders when used directly. As the category is easier to add, I tend to use it directly. --  Docu  at 12:55, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Description

There should be an option to change the description/categories or at least a notice, that the user shouldn't forget changing them. Often a picture with two persons is cropped and the user doesn't change description and category.--CennoxX (talk) 21:49, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Cropbot rotates images 90 degrees to right or left when cropping

There is something wrong with Cropbot, A picture that has been uploaded normal gets turned sideways when i try to crop it and even when I try to crop from that (hoping to rotate by saving it to computer and doing it there), it cuts off half the face..has already done this with 2 of my images, an example is this image which cropbot turns sideways when trying to crop.. I know Luxo's isn't around, does anyone know a fix, or an alternate tool to cropbot? Again I reiterate, tools like these need backups...--Stemoc (talk) 02:28, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

We do need a backup for Cropbot. There were two Flickr uploaders, Flickr2Commons and the Upload bot. They changed the interface on F2C, so I have to use the second one now, although F2C was one step... Can we not have an alternate for Cropbot? Oaktree b (talk) 01:17, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi Stemoc, that's because the image is turned by mediawiki software because of the EXIF-Rotation-Tag. You can use {{Rotate|0}}, then Rotatebot will turn the image and reset the exif tag. Greetings, --Luxo (talk) 11:52, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Wayne Wang photos

Why have you cropped my photos of Wayne Wang? I want to keep the black frame on both photos: if you don't realize it, this feature means that the photographer shot full frame and cropped in the camera, not afterwards. Doesn't work for me, the WMFLabs URL for Cropbot only gives me a completely blank page. --Rosenzweig τ 16:38, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

Hallo Cropbot,
