Please keep in mind that images and other files on the Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk. Thank you.--Panther 20:27, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

US National Weather Service office and radar in Negaunee Township Michigan.jpg

Hi,

Thanks for the precision as I am not from that region. I new it was not exactly in Marquette when I took the picture but I just used the name of the office of the NWS. Did you checked if there was any Wiki page linked to this image which could have been affected by your move?

Pierre cb (talk) 17:48, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Moving images leaves a redirect behind, so no pages will be broken unless an administrator deletes the redirect. Either way, only one user subpage on Commons used the photograph. Imzadi 1979  07:47, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 01:01, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Revert of my edits

Why would markers not go in road categories? Its a puzzlement. If I type in M-63 and go to the M-63 category I should find all the M-63 related files we have. How would a new user guess that we had more information hidden in a category called "Michigan state trunk line highway shields". I warrant no one ever searches for that obscure title. First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

File:Alaska Scenic Byway.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Photo Use in Book?

Hello, my name is Brett Ortler, and I work for Adventure Publications. We're producing a book about Tall Ships on the Great Lakes (in time for the upcoming Tall Ships festivals in 2016), and I came across your Tall Ships photo of the Coaster II on Wikipedia.

I noticed that the image we're interested in is licensed according to a Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution Sharealike license. I'm writing because we'd like to use this image in our book and we're planning on cropping the images/dropping it into a photo frame. As we understand it, this might come into conflict with the Sharealike provision of the license, so we wanted to contact you ask for your formal permission to use your images in our book. If we do so, well of course credit the images pursuant to the license.

If this is acceptable, please let us know how you'd like your images to be credited. We'd also like to send you a free book. (On a personal note, I'm a pretty huge fan of Creative Commons licenses myself, and I license my Flickr images as CC images, too.)

If you agree, can you let me know what your address is, and how you'd like your credit to read?

You can reach me at brett@adventurepublications.net

Thanks for the fine work, and take care,

Interstate 69 map

The map File:Interstate 69 map.png already exists under the name File:I69--Michigan-Indiana.png, and the name File:Interstate 69 map.png is the generic File:Interstate # map.png associated with the infobox used in these articles, thus I think it's important to use the title File:Interstate 69 map.png for the latest, most up to date maps of interstate highways, and have historical maps uploaded under a different name instead. The map that you reverted back to was the most up to date map at the time of upload in 2006, as the extension of the interstate highway was first approved in 2007, one year after the upload of the map. Nima Farid (talk) 09:45, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, and your upload distorted file attribution. It still listed Stratosphere as the creator and the creation date of the original map, both falsehoods compared to the new map. That's why it's better to upload totally new maps under totally new names. Imzadi1979 (public) (talk) 10:00, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Nima Farid: there is no such thing as a "generic" file name associated with the infoboxes. There has never been much of a standard naming convention. Just upload your new map under a new name, say File Interstate 69 map (2015).png (because it will eventually be out of date), and update the map attribute over in Wikidata for Interstate 69. We should never just replace files with new contents like that. Imzadi1979 (public) (talk) 10:06, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

By generic name for maps, I mean for interstate highways, whenever you enter road name and type in the infobox, the map File:Interstate # map.png pops up automatically without being needed to be typed out (if the map exists). Alright, so after uploading the map under the name you suggested, shall I replace the map in the infobox and move the current map to Interstate_69#Original_route? Also, I'd like to name the map in a way that could be updated as new sections of the actual highway are opened to the public, similar to how File:Aleppo Offensives 2015.svg is updated frequently, any suggested names? File:Interstate 69 map (full plan).png or File:Interstate 69 map (current status).png or something? Nima Farid (talk) 21:37, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File rename

I don't actually see anything in that policy that says the file name can't be as long as is permitted by the software. Meanwhile I see two policies which say the name stays as-is: Policy 1 (since its mine and I named it the way I want it to be) and Policy 4 (To harmonize the names of a set of images so that only one part of all names differs). At the very least I'd like to see where the policy actually says "File names must be such and such long." All I can find is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:File_naming#Length

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Those images are not copyrighted. Could you pleas undo your edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DiscoA340 (talk • contribs) 00:21, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In short, the website states at the bottom of every page: " © 2021 - J.D. Lewis - PO Box 1188 - Little River, SC 29566 - All Rights Reserved". That means just that, all rights reserved. That includes the right of republication. Now it seems that you're relying on the statements here, but that is not a license. It certainly is not a a declaration that we can use the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. I don't know why someone at the Help Desk gave you that advice, but it's faulty.
Additionally in the future, DiscoA340 please don't blank another user's talk page to make a reply, and try to make one reply and not several. By blanking, you removed content you had to business removing, like the header I have here and the code for a bot to archive this page. Second, with so many replies, you generated a notification email for each. Imzadi 1979  00:28, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The author has specifically stated that people can use his works. I don't see the problem here, If there is a problem I can send the author an email to resolve this. DiscoA340 (talk) 00:32, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, the copyright for the images is 2019. DiscoA340 (talk) 00:34, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That would be best, as the imaged themselves are all watermarked with a copyright notice, making them even more problematic. COM:OTRS has instructions on how to log permissions properly. Imzadi 1979  00:36, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
By the time I send the email and get a reply, all the images will be deleted. DiscoA340 (talk) 00:37, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Here are the help desk message I received. And another message from someone about these images. DiscoA340 (talk) 00:40, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And that's a good thing. We take copyright very seriously around here as it has legal implications. It is much better to err on the side of caution and delete images than to host infringing content in the first place. When in doubt, when it comes to copyright, you get explicit permission and log it up front before you upload images.
Also, please stop posting in this thread before I have a chance to reply to a previous message. I'm getting sick and tired of edit conflicts while posting on my own talk page. Imzadi 1979  00:43, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Could you hold off on deleting the images for about a week so I can send and receive a message from JD Lewis. I believe that he will be alright with Wikipedia using the images but if the images are deleted beforehand, then it is a waste of time on both the author and me? DiscoA340 (talk) 00:46, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am not an administrator, so I don't make that call. As I said, we take copyright very seriously around here, and it's better to delete imagery than host potentially infringing content. A neutral administrator will make the decision on the timeframe. Imzadi 1979  00:48, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How do I ask an admin to extend the deletion time period? DiscoA340 (talk) 00:49, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
While make the request, ask for versions without the watermark. If they are hosted here on Commons, we'll need to remove the watermarking. Imzadi 1979  00:51, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry but I don't understand what you said. DiscoA340 (talk) 00:53, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt that he would have images without the watermark, but I can ask if he would be alright with people airbrushing the watermark out of the image. DiscoA340 (talk) 01:26, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Here’s the problem put another way. The individual webpages where the images are displayed contain a copyright notice: " © 2021 - J.D. Lewis - PO Box 1188 - Little River, SC 29566 - All Rights Reserved”. That last part is the key to the dilemma. "All rights reserved" means the right to republish and reuse the image is reserved to the creator. Each image is also watermarked with a copyright notice. So on first glance, anyone seeing one of those maps in a Wikipedia article will assume that the image is protected by copyright and flag it for deletion because we take copyright very seriously. (We have to take copyright so seriously because it has legal implications. Like seriously, someone could be sued for infringement.) These notices conflict with the website's ToU page. So the correct procedure is to get explicit permission and explicit wording on which license the author would like used. You, and someone at the Help Desk, can’t just pick a license. For our purposes, images hosted on Commons need to be free for reuse, even commercial reused, and free to be remixed, meaning they can be altered. If those options aren’t on the table, we can’t host them on Commons. They can’t be hosted on Wikipedia under fair use because a map of those counties can be made without copyright issues.
From another angle, we can find or create better maps without the copyright issues. Wikipedia has a general house style for maps that could be used. New maps could use the correct highway markers. New maps could show the adjacent counties instead of completely graying them out. We can create interactive maps that would be even better than fixed maps like those. In short, there are better options. Imzadi 1979  03:19, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
