Reading an old Sci.Am. article in Mathematical Games by M.Gardner on cellular automata (Feb 1971), I saw mentioned an important contribution by Moore on the topic, namely the proof of existence of "Garden of Eden" patterns. This proof is present in Essays on Cellular Automata" (Univ. of Illinois press, 1970, A.W.Burks ed.) Alexxx m 09:41, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that the same person who contributed to this article created the Homer Jacobson. Recently Jacobson has retracted some of his material stating that his errors have been misread by pseudoescientists.[1] So this article should be reviewed as well. "Built reliable circuits using less reliable relays" ?

edit

Is the phrase "built reliable circuits using less reliable relays" a figure of speech, or a literal fact?

As a figure of speech, it is a colorful bit of biography, but perhaps not encyclopedic in tone; to my eye, it sticks out as a distraction. It's like saying "the equipment he worked with was not very good, but he was enterprising and did the best he could with what he had." Irrelevant unless it's a core element of the man's biography, which, I think, is not the case here.

As a literal fact, it seems to me unlikely (but a highly significant fact, if true) that Moore built "reliableness" into circuits made from unreliable relays. If true, the idea should be fleshed out with reference to error-checking, self-correction, and so on.
