He was descended on his father's side of the family from two signatories of the Declaration of Independence, Dr. Benjamin Rush and Richard Stockton. His maternal grandfather was Ralph K. Davies, a San Francisco industrialist who was involved with oil refining and was the long time chairman of American President Lines. His maternal grandmother was philanthropist Louise Davies]l. The Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco is named after her.[1]
