Douglas W. Clayton is an American investor and venture capitalist born on September 2, 1960 in The United States of America. [1]

Background

Mr. Clayton is regarded as an expert[2][3] on investing on Asian markets and emerging markets, having invested for Asia for over 25 years[4], acting as CEO of prominent investment firms, founding[5] several private equity funds, and been featured as an authority on worldwide newscasts such as BBC[6], Bloomberg[7]and CNBC.[8]


Education

He received his degree in 1982 from Cornell, a BA in history. During college, his ivy league education, he received an ROTC scholarship and was active in Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He also holds a MM degree from Chulalongkorn University, largely regarded as Thailand's best university[9].

After Cornell, Douglas fulfilled his ROTC requirement to serve in the United States Army where he begun as a Lieutenant. A natural leader, he was soon promoted to Captain. Clayton served his country for 4 years in both The United States and South Korea until his honorable discharge in 1984. During this time, he completed US Army Intelligence school, Airborne parachutist school, Counter-terrorism training, and Korean ranger training course. [10]


Professional Career

After his stint in the Army, where he lead counter intelligence units, Clayton remained in Asia to begin his career in finance. First hired at Kerry Securities and later at Sun Hung Kai. In 1989, he was transferred to Bangkok to launch and manage a Thailand investment research team. [11]

In 1993, Douglas Clayton became the managing director of CLSA subsidiary of Credit Agricole, one of Asias leading brokers and investment groups. CLSA is a privately held brokerage with offices in New York, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Venezuela. As the Country manager of CLSA Securities Thailand, he lead his team to a #1 ranking in an Asiamoney Brokers Poll.,[12]After this series of success, he was then promoted to CEO of CLSA securities Latin America.[13]

Shortly thereafter, Douglas worked at Abacus Equity Partners[14] , where he was instrumental in several venture capital and growth capital investments and buyouts, including several IPO's[15]. His final stint before starting his own fund was at Credit Argicole Indosuez WI Car Securities, where he managed the research and sales team in Singapore and Malaysia. [16] [17]


Douglas then founded, and currently presides as Chief Executive Officer of the Private equity fund: Leopard Capital. Leopard is a truly international venture capital fund with a presence in New York, Phnom Penh, Vientiane, Dhaka, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Hong Kong, and Bangkok.

One of Leopard Capital's investments include Kingdom Breweries (Cambodia) Ltd. of which Mr. Clayton serves as a Director. [18]

Besides his work as a venture capitalist, Mr. Clayton is seen also as a humanitarian, who is able to assist emerging economies through commerce and capitalism, after periods of strife or disaster[19], such as the Sri Lanka War, or the devastating earthquake in Haiti, revitalizing the aforementioned economies.


The Future

After success[20] in Cambodia, Mr. Clayton and his growing team at Leopard Capital have thier eyes set on other economies which have a had a stormy past, but see blue skies on the horizon - such as Burma[21] , Sri Lanka, Haiti[22][23] Laos,[24][25], and Bangladesh.[26]
