Mallika Sherawat - Early life

edit

The part of you have added doesnt look informative. It is highly opinionative. There is no need of so much of story in a wikipedia article. It would be good if you can edit the part to be precise and upto the point. I hope you got my point. It would be disastrous on part of us if we allow negative/positive points about a individual person ( by just providing some news source) in wikipedia

Thanks for your understanding SaatwikG (talk) 06:19, 28 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Which part does not look informative and which part looks opinionative?? On one hand you are saying it in not informative and in the next sentence you are saying that so much information is not required! Check out the biographies of other persons. It is not simply like typing a Biodata. The information that I have put up is necessary to understand her whole personality and her need to cook up a background. We need not be worried about positive or negative points as long as we are factual. And what I have put up is factual. We are not doing moral policing here. I hope you get the point. Thanks for discussion.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 04:11, 29 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Who knows if those relatives and parents are correct or not? Is Indian express reporter the final judge? The way you concluded whole thing is extremely negative and this is not a neutral point of view in any sense ( the way you added hindi words reflect this completely) Pls check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view. Who told you that "sherawat" name doesnt exist? Please check http://www.jatland.com/home/Sherawat. And Is there any importance to the article whether she was forced to marry or with her desire? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SaatwikG (talkcontribs) 15:33, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

we are not to Judge whether relatives are correct or not....simply report facts. Lets us not judge whether Indian express is final Judge..there is no end to it. WP BIO's should give both positive and negative news without bias. And public figures cannot avoid criticism. And no one claims that Sherawat Surname does not exists. Only it is uncommon. Pls read properly.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 15:47, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

The version you have added is completely a judgement rather than facts. There is lot of discussion on her early life in her wiki page. Nobody knows what is truth. Thats the reason they haven't added any part of it to the wiki page. Please move this arguments to discussion page SaatwikG (talk) 17:10, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pls discuss which part you have found objectionable and against wikipedia policies?

As I said, you are of the view that her version is entirely wrong and indian express version is true. This is like a cooking up story. There will be lot of gossip floating around newspapers on movie actors. Should we include all that and try to project it as a true story? Is there any need for all these statements w.r.to her early life? You are trying to portray her character in a wrong way. I checked lot of Indian celebrities wikipages. There is no need for explaining everything in wikipage unless it is highly useful to the article. (1) I have given a link where sherawat is entirely valid surname. Is there any link which says her mother maiden name is sehrawat? (2) How do you know that whether her marriage is a forced one or based on her desire. These are entirely personal things which we are not sure about. (3) I believe below sentences are pure gossip which adds no value to the article and putting them on wiki is highly objectionable.

When her father, Mukesh Kumar Lamba, questioned her she is said to have replied that "Papa, filmon mein yeh sab kehna padta hai achchi publicity ke liye.

Glamour photographers recall that Reema Gill, as she was known then, would avoid any mention of her husband, even deny being married. Her publicity statements also got her father in trouble as he had to spent a lot of time pacifying angry relatives when Mallika has said in interviews, "I come from a place where women are kept in the backyard along with cattle"; that her parents "fled from Rohtak" because relatives disapproved of her career choice; and again, "In my family, no woman has even held a job " SaatwikG (talk) 17:50, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

This has been reported in paper and Mallika has not raised any objection to the same. You are not able to demonstrate yet that it is against WP policies. Pls read again.....no one is saying that Sherawat is invalid surname. Try to understand difference between invalid and uncommon. I would like more opinion on this edit. Somehow your arguments sounds hollow and without basis. what is fact for one person may be gossip for another. It is necessary to portray true story. Check pages of celebrities, it gives infos on their scandals and affairs. This may be denied and considered by them. But it is to be reported.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 18:06, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

2011 religion meeting and Jainism

edit

Thank you for your input. Just dropping you a note indicating that we have a lot of space available to discuss specific articles, and it might help to pinpoint specific ones which are in most serious need of development. Maybe, if such is possible, it might help to have for instance "Start" or "Stub" class "Top" importance articles listed first, then C class/Top importance and Stub/Start class High importance articles next, for example. But specifics would help, and I think we should all feel free to take up as much space as required to communicate out ideas on the page. With any luck, next month, we will have the option to discuss how to act on the proposals, but it would help a lot to have the suggestions be detailed enough to be fairly quickly acted upon. User John8790 and his comments in Talk: Mahabharata

edit

Hello Indian Chronicles. I am writing to say that I was concerned with your removal of an opinion from the Talk: Mahabharata page. While I would say that the opinion showed narrow mindedness, a considerable lack of understanding and probably bigotry, I also think that your removal of it shows a thin skin and an apparent inability to deal with critical opinion. The user's comments expressed opinions widely held by Christians and Muslims, though they don't often say them to face of Hindus. They are easy to compose a sensible response to, which is what you should have done. I suggest that you revert your deletion of this entry. Thanks. Imc (talk) 16:14, 22 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I dont have time and inclination to refute each and every bigoted comment that any joker may come up with. I believe that I did the right thing by deleting the senseless posting. Thanks.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 17:33, 22 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
First, nobody asked you to 'refute' it. Second, since it made an apparently valid argument, that a reference was invalid, deleting the comment without dealing with this looks like censorship. Imc (talk) 21:00, 22 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think you are new to Wikipedia. Please go thru the rules. You cannot scream censorship on every deletion of vandalism. Discussion pages are for improvement about the particular article. Not to abuse a particular community. My conscience was clear when I deleted the posting. It is clear also now. Thanks.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 04:00, 23 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Idol?

edit

Hi there :) I'm here discuss the whole "statue vs. idol" thing. Isn't calling a statue of an another religion's God/Goddess an idol, implying something like it's a false god or it's worship of that god as negative? Isn't idol supposed to be statue of a false god that is worshiped? What are your thoughts? Thanks, David -Angel David (talk) 01:30, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

This all is quite interesting. I did some research and found that the term “idol” is has negative connotations since it is so strongly connected in English with both the Biblical commandment prohibiting the worship of idols and the later Protestant critiques of the Catholic veneration of icons as idolatry. In India and in eastern cultures this term is not used derisively. Maybe we can take a second opinion here. Thanks--Indian Chronicles (talk) 10:17, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, I feel that the word 'idol' is getting biased with, like, you guys must've heard of idol worship as a 'no-no', but not statue worship. I mean, like, we may worship literally anything, but I feel that idol worship shouldn't be frowned upon, as it is someone's belief being hurt to satisfy ours'. Tirthankar - Suggestion

edit

I have seen you editing consistently well in Jain related articles, and I assume you are a knowledgeable person in the field. I noticed the title Tirthankar and i am wondering whether the article should be rightly titled Tirthankara. Isn't the former just used among the Hindi speaking people owing to their dropping the ending "a" from the Sanksrit and Prakrit words? Arjuncodename024 05:37, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

You are right the IAST spelling with diacritics used by scholars is Tīthaṇkara. However without diacritics both Tirthankara or Tirthankar are right. However popular spelling will be the IAST without discritics i.e. "Tirthankara". So I guess name change is justified.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 09:24, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Since I am not able to make the move myself. I have placed a request. Cheers! Arjuncodename024 11:42, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Requesting Your Help

edit

Hi, I'm Aayush and I'm new to Wikipedia. I've been making edits to articles on Jainism to give them a polished look. I noticed that you also have an avid interest in Jainism. I was editing the List of Jains and standardizing it on the lines of other such articles. I notices the List of Hindus contained the names of a lot of Jains. I removed them and added them to the List of Jains. But my edit was reverted and now the names appear in both the lists. If you have a look at the talk page of List of Hindus, you will notice that the names of Ratan Tata and Salman Khan were removed because they were not Hindus. But the editors of the List of Hindus feel as if Jains are Hindus. I'm not sure how to deal with this, maybe you can provide me with some feedback. Thanks.--Aayush18 (talk) 10:26, 10 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Aayush. Your are absolutely right. Jains are not Hindus. They need to be removed from the list of Hindus.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 11:01, 10 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Anish, someone removed all the names from the List of Jains that were not wikilinked. As you had mentioned on the talk page, there is no such requirement for names to be wikilinked. I had tried to undo the changes, which were bordering on vandalism, but was unable to do so because it said there were conflicting edits. I request you to undo that edit. Also, I have been editing the list lately to standardize it.--Aayush18 (talk) 15:24, 20 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I feel let it be. Maybe it is better, if only wikilinked names are included. This list is used by many characters for self- promotion. At least that will be prevented. And if you want to included a non-article personality, then you can give references. But I am glad you are taking interest in Jainism related articles.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 16:16, 22 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Requesting your help

edit

Hi Anish, I wanted to draw your attention to Gymnosophists and Calanus of India. Someone recently edited these articles to give an undue weight-age to the view that these people were Hindus. While most likely they were Jains. The article before these edits mentioned that these people could be either, but did not favor HIndus, as it does now. In fact, the word 'Jain' has been removed from the article Calanus of India altogether. The editor now mentions stuff like The gymnosophists, the Greeks encountered in 3rd Century B.C. at Taxila, an ancient center of Vedic learning, were probably an old sect of Hindu Naga sadhus. The naked saints, whom Alexander met has often been mis-taken as Jain Digambara, who preach of non-violence. without providing any references. I didn't undo the edits because some of the other stuff was sourced. Adding a citation needed tag to the contentious part (above line for example) doesn't help, because that unnecessary line still remains in the article. I know this article isn't really a priority, but I didn't want this edit to go unnoticed as I feel if such unnecessary edits aren't corrected soon, they end up becoming part of the general consensus. So how do you suggest we deal with this? --Aayush18 (talk) 08:34, 19 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think it would be our duty to show a true picture of Jainism wherever possible while at the same time respecting the rules of wikipedia. If you feel that there should be mention of Jainism in these articles and you have references then you must edit the articles.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 18:30, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ok I will discuss this with User:Jethwarp who made these changes.--Aayush18 (talk) 04:07, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia article on Godiji Parshwanath

edit

I had seen the photographs of the Gori Temple in Tharparkar in Pakistan. I was never aware of its history, until I read about the 200th anniversay of Godiji Parshwant temple in Mumbai.

I have been able to locate Jain books that mention the ancient temple now in Pakistan. I have also been able to locate British accounts. A person had visited the temple when there was still some Jain population in Tharparkar region and some people who had seen the original image were still alive. I have been able to connect the accounts. Kindly visit.

Opinion Required - Banish the Usage of terms like Demi-Gods

edit

hi Anish,

While going through some articles under our project, I would like to add some of the following suggestions

  • We need to avoid using terms like 'Demi-Gods'. we need to start the using the actual words at all places. Goof Up in the article God in Jainism has forcefully created a belief that there is a concept of God in Jainism which is untrue. You need to look at first two paragraphs on the article.
  • we could start a terminology for the words whih could exlain them but we need to use the exact words in the articles to avoid creating Concept which does not exist in jainism.

Mananshah15 (talk) 10:26, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please do not try to create your own policies. Also do not indulge in creating any new false terminologies. We cannot banish anything on wikipedia. Just because you do not agree to something, that does not mean that it is untrue. I suggest you read something about Jainism before commenting on it. Exactly how do you intend to portray the words like "Bhagwan", "Deva" etc? There is absolutely no confusion in he article and portrays the philosophy of Jainism accurately. I suggest that first you get your fundas clear.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 17:32, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re : Merging of articles

edit

The cosmology, dravya and tattva belongs to the same heading of metaphysics. The texts under dravya and tattva were very short. Also, the section of tattva had description of all the dravyas, <As the first two tattva are basically all the dravya>. There was a considerable overlap in those topics. Wikipedia is not a dictionary and I found the above mentioned points to be sufficient reasons for merger. Therefore I merged the articles boldly.

Thanks for quoting the policies but I am aware of them. You have to be bold but be careful! There is no harming in being bold in case of copyediting and making improvements, but such a major change like redirect, merge and deleting requires consensus.
Also refer to the policy on merging where a proper discussion is required before merging. You have clearly not followed the policy.
Furthermore I am aware that Wikipedia is not dictionary. I do not know whether you read the articles or not, but these articles were not simply definitions but gave necessary information about the topic. Rather than deleting the stubs or short article, it would have been more productive if you had improved them.
Nevertheless, nothing is lost on Wikipedia and hence it can be undone.
Following are the reasons why this merging is not required and not correct:
  1. Being a part of related topic is not same as being a “same topic”
  2. In case Religious philosophies, scholars prefer the nomenclature “Cosmology” rather than metaphysics. For eg. Refer to Hindu cosmology, Babylonian cosmology, Biblical cosmology, Islamic cosmology, Buddhist cosmology etc.
  3. Correspondingly you will not find metaphysics for the religions as most scholars consider it more of philosophical rather than a religious concept. Hence you will not find articles like Hindu metaphysics and like.
  4. Tattva and Dravya are important concepts in Jainism to merit separate articles for them. Refer to general articles on Tattva and Dravya which are not merged. Infact Tattva and dravya are important concepts that they have important texts named after them….like Tattvarthasutra and Dravyasamgrah.
  5. Just because Dravya is part of Tattva, it does not mean that we need to merge them. Iron is part of category metals. Still, it is not necessary to merge these articles. Furthermore, differences are more than overlap.
--Indian Chronicles (talk) 11:50, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
As per the above, I am undoing the merge and renaming.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 12:22, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

The article Karma in Jainism meets all criteria for FAC, as far as I can see. I am wondering why haven't you put it up for nomination yet. Can I put it for nomination? Rahuljain2307 (talk) 19:19, 11 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

You are right. I had thought of putting it for FAC. However, my experience with Anekantavada FAC was very stressful. I relaised that I do not have enough time to address each and every objections and It may fail the nomination even for 0.01%. So I decided not to nominate it. But if you feel it will pass the muster, please nominate it.Maybe first we can try to put it for GA? --Indian Chronicles (talk) 08:35, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Due to the 2-week rule, I have to wait for sometime before I can nominate the article for FA. However, I think it is possible for me to be a co-nominator. The GA nominations page has a backlog. The page may have to wait for months before it gets reviewed for GA, so putting it up directly for FA seems a better idea. Rahuljain2307 (talk) 10:08, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re : Jain philosophy improvements

edit

I have trimmed down the section of Jain cosmology. However, it still does not seem good. I'll read about Jain cosmology and write a short summary in a couple of weeks. Regarding category merger, I felt that 'Karma in Jainism' was not a valid category. I could not think of any article except this which rightfully belonged to that category. Over-categorization can make the management a bit difficult, so I merged the category with its ancestor category Jainism. However, I do not know much about categorization. If you feel that my decision was not helpful, feel free to revert it back to the way it was. Rahuljain2307 (talk) 19:19, 27 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I was thinking that the Category Jainism is too broad. Maybe it should have only sub-categories and no pages except that of main article. My thinking was that Karma being a huge topic within Jainism should have a sub-category as many articles like causes of karma, types of karma, Nigoda etc can fit in that sub-category. Anyway we can think over it. As of now I do not want to revert anything done in good faith. :).--Indian Chronicles (talk) 08:43, 28 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have started the article Jain Center of Southern California based on a suggestion. It is based on newspaper reports and books. I hope to add to it during the next few months. You are invited to edit and add. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I have observed the evolution of some of the newer Jain centers in USA. I think people involved in such projects will find the history of JCSC very interesting.

It was a key organization behind the formation of JAINA. It is going to celebrate its 25th anniversary soon.

Karma in Jainism

edit

The GA reviewer seem to make a valid point that the explanation of yoga is redundant, so I removed it as per the review. Rahul Jain (talk) 15:48, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

OK. I understand. However, the word yoga is popularly known to mean hatha yoga and hence my concern was that this should not be misunderstood as which type of Yoga we are talking about. The link is also misleading as it links to yoga, which is a philisophy of Patanjali.--Indian Chronicles (talk) 08:35, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Regarding recent edits at Karma in Jainism,

The book "The Doctrine of Karman in Jain Philosophy" at page 1 have nothing to support it. I also think that it is unlikely that Glasenapp is of such a view. Rahul Jain (talk) 03:09, 29 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Editor of the Week : nominations needed!

edit

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

Phoolchandra Shastri moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Phoolchandra Shastri, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Image source problem with File:Depiction of lesyas.jpg

edit

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Depiction of lesyas.jpg.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:45, 1 April 2021 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
