Altered Genesis is about to be merged into the band page which will leave only that and two band members linked (aside from the related bands which I don't think should count to the total), and the notability of all of those is quite questionable anyway so who knows if they last. Lets not create a completely new style just because of a personal preference for style. If this is wanted, it should be brought up at Template:Lang-zh and if consensus is for this new style, then it should be implemented there instead of creating a new template and module. Gonnym (talk) 06:40, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. Separation by semicolon is not mandated in MOS:CHINA anywhere. If someone has a preference for a different style and wants a template to simplify their editing, there's no harm in that. There's no consensus at MOS:CHINA for any one particular way of presenting Chinese characters, which topic areas use Traditional up front and Simplified following or vice versa, when to provide a direct translation, when to provide a transliteration, when the |labels= (internal links to Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hanyu Pinyin) need to be displayed, etc. It's almost all just a body of common practice and editorial judgement. I wouldn't personally choose to use this template, but I'm not in favour of deleting it just because it's not the way we usually do it. Folly Mox (talk) 07:45, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Having said that, if this template is kept we might just get consensus on some of those things, which might underpin a future deletion of the template for producing MOS-noncompliant output 🙃 Folly Mox (talk) 07:47, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would be happy in general as long as the style of inline Chinese character text is clarified some, as @Folly Mox says, absolutely. In fact, I originally used the {{zh}} standard style, which is not what was used throughout Chinese language, Chinese characters etc. But I was worried all my work to standardize/copyedit those articles would be seen as a contravention of their house styles, of which {{zh2}} was partially inspired by.
That said, I do think this is much nicer to read than just semicolons throughout, esp since the is fullwidth and as such doesn't awkwardly stagger rows of tabular text as much, and the distinction between simplified and traditional characters is arguably of a different type than that between forms; transliteration; and 'gloss'.
However, I am also just as wary of fragmenting the extant and very useful template, but it was write-protected (justly) and I wanted to experiment some before I suggested we change it. In particular, these seem like options:
  • having a discrete "inline mode" for {{zh}} that looks like the {{zh2}} output, as it seems like the former is more meant for the head of articles than being nice to read inline in article text
  • just using {{zh}} throughout, and agreeing that that's the format for Chinese language text, which is what I was doing before
  • deliberating more on a style guide, and maybe figuring out something more flexible for inline presentation, since there are a few limitations with the template i keep bumping into besides the ordering and syntax
Remsense 12:36, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
While we're at it, a few styles I think might be viable for general use in paragraphs and tables, which i think is an appropriate scope for a template like this—based on what I've seen in literature, given that some uses will have any combination of one to all four of the fields we're considering, plus potentially multiple glosses, character variants, or transliterations:
  • 汉字; 漢字; hànzì; 'Chinese characters'⸻{{zh|labels=no}}
  • 汉字/漢字; hànzì; 'Chinese characters'⸻{{zh2}}
  • 汉字;漢字 (hànzì; 'Chinese characters')⸻(fullwidth semicolon?)
  • 汉字/漢字 (hànzì; 'Chinese characters')
  • 汉字/漢字 hànzì ('Chinese characters')
  • hànzì(汉字/漢字; 'Chinese characters')⸻possibly using full-width parentheses—though there are many situations where you'd omit the transliteration, though, and the code will be a bit more complicated, mostly likely
The long and short of it is, the vast majority of articles, you don't want to have too much of this inline. but for the ones that require a moderate amount, like the ones focusing on the Chinese languages, there are going to be multiple of these within a paragraph, which is certainly a tough style/readability issue. but I'm trying! :) Remsense 13:19, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please also note that MOS:SLASH is against separating things with a slash. Gonnym (talk) 13:41, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's correct, but I think this might be a reasonable exception to that, especially given (in my mind, and also given how MOS:SLASH permits spaced slashes) the primary issue with slash separation here is the thinness of the slash, which is not encountered with a full-width slash. Also, the MOS's suggested alternatives here are not generally very apropos or canonical for use among Chinese-language text.Remsense 13:47, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
delete. A new template the wrong way to add an additional way to render Chinese. The right way is to add it to {{zh}} which already had a number of options for varying the output. It would be logical to add this functionality there, where it can be easily found by someone looking to change how the template output looks. Forking the template makes that harder, and means double the work if some other change is needed.--2A04:4A43:90AF:FAB6:C187:554B:85F7:B222 (talk) 02:49, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to do this, unfortunately, it is protected and used on hundreds of thousands of articles, so frankly, I was a little scared to suggest changes off the bat, I hope that seems reasonable. Remsense 04:32, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good news everyone! I've tweaked the code to {{zh}} so that hopefully it can print an inline style more agreeable with certain (most?) use cases. Behold!

{{Lang-zh/sandbox|p=wǒ|l=I, me|out=p}}
pinyin: (Chinese: ; lit. 'I', 'me')⸻splits and properly quotes glosses!

{{Lang-zh/sandbox|s=中华|t=中華|p=Zhōnghuá|l=China|out=p|labels=no}}
Zhōnghuá (中华; 中華; 'China')

{{Lang-zh/sandbox|s=亚细亚|t=亞細亞|first=t|l=Asia|j=Aa3 sai3 aa3|out=p}}
pinyin: Yàxìyà (traditional Chinese: 亞細亞; simplified Chinese: 亚细亚; Jyutping: Aa3 sai3 aa3; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: A-sòe-a; lit. 'Asia')

{{Lang-zh/sandbox|s=亚细亚|t=亞細亞|first=t|p=Yàxìyà|l=Asia|labels=no|poj=A-sòe-a|out=s}}
亚细亚 (亞細亞; Yàxìyà; A-sòe-a; 'Asia')

{{Lang-zh/sandbox|s=集团|t=集團|first=t|p=jítuán|l=group, bloc, conglomerate, cor'porate body|out=p}}
pinyin: jítuán (traditional Chinese: 集團; simplified Chinese: 集团; lit. 'group', 'bloc', 'conglomerate', 'cor'porate body')⸻doesn't split glosses foolishly!

{{Lang-zh/sandbox|s=她刚刚离开了|l=she's just left|out=l}}
lit. 'she's just left' (Chinese: 她刚刚离开了)

{{Lang-zh/sandbox|s=电脑|tr=computer|p=diànnǎo|l=electric brain|labels=no}}
电脑; diànnǎo; 'electric brain'; "computer"⸻does double quotes for actual translations, reserving single quotes for glosses!

like i said, i was super antsy about trying to hack on the code that might affect a lot of stuff, but i'm sure someone more experienced with me will take a look and make sure my audit was sufficient, and everyone will tell me if this is good or not! :) Remsense 05:56, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
