I have written the Wikibook Usability for Nerds which discusses the user interfaces of technical products. In a few examples I have excerpts of screendumps from commercial software. It is arguable whether such screen excerpts are copyright protected or not, however, they are not allowed on Wikimedia Commons. Therefore, I need to upload them as fair use. Where can I upload them, and how do I get permission? Agnerf (discuss • contribs) 10:16, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- They are subject to copyright which is why they are not permitted on Commons. Do you understand what Fair Use means and how it limits the use of such images here? QuiteUnusual (discuss • contribs) 12:13, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes. Agnerf (discuss • contribs) 12:53, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- I am awaiting your response. I need permission to upload for fair use, or somebody to do it for me. Agnerf (discuss • contribs) 08:36, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- I was expecting a longer answer than "yes" so people could judge your understanding of fair use. Perhaps you could briefly explain your understanding of how it applies? Thanks - QuiteUnusual (discuss • contribs) 14:09, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- He stated "It is arguable whether such screen excerpts are copyright protected or not, however, they are not allowed on Wikimedia Commons." that implies some understanding and at least that he has read the information on the subject at Commons. I think you can expedite this since he will only focus on a single work and you can check any abuse on the first batch of uploads... --Panic (discuss • contribs) 05:13, 14 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- I don't know if you expect me to write a digest of something that anybody can google. It looks like the server is in California, so US jurisdiction will apply. [1] [2]. Copyright law is fairly similar here in Europe, though with different names. I don't think there are any problems with posting excerpts of screendumps as fair use in a book about user interfaces.
