Americans?

[edit]

Were all members of the Mormon Battalion American? If so, it could be a subcategory of Category:American Latter Day Saints. I'm not sure if they were, though. There were a lot of immigrants from Europe among the Mormons in the 19th century and I'm not sure that they were all American nationals at the time of the Battalion. Thanks. I think in order to answer this question, we must define what it is to be an American. Many Mormons were European immigrants, as well as many residents in the United States. Are they Americans if they relocated to America? Are they Americans if they are enlisted in the American army? How did one become an American national at the time? Through a citizenship application or just longstanding residency? I think they are Americans, especially because of their enlistment in the American army and their membership in a group intending to remain in the United States political structure (see the State of Deseret's 1849 constitution and petition for statehood). I would agree. I think we could make it a subcategory of Category:American Latter Day Saints then? Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:30, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
