Japanese Grand Prix cancellation

[edit]

According to the January 1978 issue of Motorsport (p.23), the Japanese Grand Prix - rumoured to be switching to Suzuka anyway - was cancelled due to the organisers asking it to be switched from April to October; this had been done in both 1976 and 1977 but was refused and as the organisers couldn't make the April date (for unclear reasons) it was cancelled outright at a very early stage, possibly even before the provisional calendar was announced. It seems that the FIA/CSI were just fed up with this happening, and were mindful of complaints of the length of the 1977 season with such a long haul race coming so late in the year.
