Background section: All text is irrelevant to this article

[edit]

The current background section was tagged, by me, as being of questionable relevance because it has little to do with the context of this shoot-out. It appears to be in violation of WP:SYNTH in that it is a random cobbling together of outdated crime statistics from Brazil. This is not particularly relevant to the background of this event because one would expect some background on this event, such as the past activities of the people involved, or at least recent events that were connected to this shootout in the locale in question and in the recent past. What we don't need here is random, disconnected, and outdated statistics. Honestly, the entire block of text should go completely, but I thought I was being courteous by tagging it for a while before it was taken out. --Jayron32 13:32, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The shootout was related to drug crime, the background section has the most current information I could find regarding drug crime in Brazil, in particular the recruitment of children which WP:RS are reporting was the impetus for the raid in the first place. It may be a bit dated, but it's certainly relevant and provides context as to why the police would enter the favela and conduct such an operation. --LaserLegs (talk) 17:29, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, without that there's no context. Many readers will have heard about this shootout without previous knowledge of the situation in Rio. Jim Michael (talk) 17:57, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's also related to the Big Bang happening, but really, we need some more direct influence. Random statistics about national drug crime in Brazil, which are outdated by a decade or more, is not particularly useful. Now, information on a) drug crime b) in Rio de Janeiro (or, even better, in the neighborhood this happened in) and c) from recently would all be actually good to put in the article. What's there now feels like "well, we need something here, so here's some random stats I found by googling 'drugs in Brazil'. That's not good enough. It's not better than nothing at all, it's unrelated WP:SYNTH violating and mostly irrelevant to this article. Instead, find some information that may have actually had a direct influence on this event not just "here's some stuff that happened at <indeterminate time in the past> vaguely in the country in question. Brazil is a big place, and a decade ago is a long time. "People were murdered in Brazil in 2007" is not useful background information for a specific police shootout in 2021. It's just not. --Jayron32 18:17, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that specific & recent background info & events are better than old stats for the country as a whole. I maintain that mentioning the 2010 crisis is useful, because it's about a previous sequence of major violence in the city between drug-dealing gangs & the authorities.
