This article needs ...

[edit]
  • Evidence supporting the entire introductory paragraph
  • Definite expansion to include information on both civilian and military biodefense methodologies
  • Addressing the large scale implied by "protection" against agents across an entire population, either of troops or civilians
  • Historical viewpoint on biodefense ... pre-microbiology in particular.
  • etc.etc.etc.

The two references I've added are big chunks of information, but some is historical, some planning only, and some implemented differently than detailed. Additional sources are needed ... and not articles from popular news magazines.

This article also requires an expanded definition, not specific to the military as biodefense now incorporates Office of Health Affairs (OHA) within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, civilian, military, emergency responders, private industry and universities. A generic biodefense definition would be: Procedures involved in taking defensive measures against attacks using biological agents.
