Is it free (as in "with freedom") software?[edit]

Is Boom free software? I know the Doom engine was GPL'd, so the Boom source has to also be GPL'd (and therefore free software), but maybe the levels or graphics or some other proprietary stuff has been added. Can anyone comment?

The only part of Doom that is free is the source code. Someone making a derivative work, such as a source port, does not magically make the games resources freeware or public domain. There is a project called FreeDoom, however, that is an attempt to create a new, free PWAD file, with completely replaced content. Just don't hold your breath.--Drat (Talk) 01:41, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
According to http://freedoom.sourceforge.net/contributors/status/ it looks quite finished by now. // Liftarn
