Katherina or Catarina

[edit]

How is her Christian name actually spelt? German wikipedia uses the second option, although there is a reference to someone calling her "Catharina". Could we make a final decision? Safebreaker (talk) 13:28, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I raised this question before; my position was then, and still is, that the name should be "Catarina Cavalieri". Grove uses it and cites a source (A. Weinmann) for her birthname as "Cavalier, Catharina Magdalena Josepha". On the other hand, Grove also has an article on "Cavalieri [Cavallieri], Caterina [Kavalier, Franziska Helena Appolonia]" with different dates of birth/death (19 February 1760 – 30 June 1801) — which has me thoroughly baffled.
It is entirely consistent that when she italianised her name from "Kavalier/Cavalier" to "Cavalieri", she also italianised the Germanic parts of her first names from "Katherina/Catherina Josepha" to "Catarina Guiseppa". Note that the distinction between "C" and "K" as the first letter in surnames was fluid in Germany well into the 20th century (my own family has a branch which was variously named "Kasprowiak/Casprowiak").
In summary, I think she should be named "Catarina Magdalena Giuseppa Cavalieri, (born Katherina Magadalena Josepha Cavalier)".
PS: Confusingly, the date of birth for "Catarina Cavalieri" in the English and Italian Wikipedia is given as 11 March 1755, Grove gives 18 March, the German Wikipedia 13 March. Michael Bednarek (talk) 02:34, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Shall we take the bull by the horns, then? Safebreaker (talk) 09:24, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Meaning? Moving the article to "Catarina Cavalieri"? That would indeed be my preferred option, but I'm not dogmatic about it — there are always REDIRECTs. Michael Bednarek (talk) 12:04, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have applied for the page to be moved; if it is moved and I forget to change the various links, would someone please remind me to do so in a couple of days' time? Thankyou. Michael, I left a message for you on your Italian talk page, but it is now irrelevant. Safebreaker (talk) 15:30, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, the move to "Caterina Cavalieri" has not improved the situation; it should have been moved to "Catarina Cavalieri".
PS: My Italian is extremely limited; my Home Wikipedia is here (EN). Michael Bednarek (talk) 02:19, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The article has to be renamed "Catharina Cavalieri", because that's how she herself signed her name.--62.47.135.177 (talk) 09:23, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Catharina Cavalieri's baptism record

[edit]

I see many different dates for Cavalieri's birth. I found a baptism record from Lichtentaler Pfarrkirche that states March 18, 1755 as the date of baptism. This could explain in part the difference in birth dates as babies weren't generally baptized the day they were born, so Cavalieri must have been born a few days prior. This entry is very hard to read, especially since my German is not great, but the handwriting is also atrocious. Her name appears here as Catharina Magdalena Josefa Cavalier.
