Wichita Beacon, page 11, Monday, November 4, 1912. Article says city engineer recently found an old plat filed with the county register’s office May 17, 1871 and recorded in the book of plats A, page 6, on January 6, 1872, indicating that West Wichita was originally named the town of Elgin, comprising three square blocks bounded by Oak Street on the east, Walnut Street on the west, Pearl Street on the north (now the Missouri Pacific tracks) and Pine Street (now Burton Avenue) on the south. ¶ An appended note reads: “Notice is hereby given that the Elgin Town Company of Sedgwick County, Kansas, did on the 13th day of March, 1871 legally change the name of said corporation and adopt the name of ‘Delano Town Company.’

West Wichita by 1872?

[edit]

Somewhere, I have seen a map that shows the area north of Douglas (then Chicago) Avenue and next to the river as belonging to the West Wichita Town Company in 1872ish. The Tihen Notes refer to the area as West Wichita starting about that time period. I haven't found an explicit source for exactly when (or if) the town name changed, but it seems likely that it did long before annexation. The "Delano" name referred to the township (which ironically now doesn't include modern Delano) or the post office pretty much from 1872 until the mid 1990's - the neighborhood (and environs) was West Wichita, Fifth Ward, or West Side. Oh, and the ill-advised "River West" the city government tried to brand it with, which still lives on in wayfinding despite the fact that no one has a clue what it is.

If somebody runs across a source for this (like maybe actually getting into the Eagle or Beacon archives) it would be nice to have it in the article. 2602:306:CC86:CAE0:D685:64FF:FE0D:A53B (talk) 14:43, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
