Rename proposal Chief Hogsett --> Elon Hogsett

[edit]

Consistent with recent discussion at WT:BASEBALL, this is a proposal to rename biographical article Chief Hogsett to Elon Hogsett. Searching on newspapers.com finds that during Hogsett's time in professional baseball (1925 to 1944), especially with the Detroit Tigers (1929 to 1936), he was referred to as "Elon Hogsett" much more than "Chief Hogsett". Search examples, all done on newspapers.com:

  • "elon hogsett" pitcher for 1925–1944 gets 16,212 hits
  • "chief hogsett" pitcher for 1925–1944 gets 5,312 hits
  • "elon hogsett" baseball for 1925–1944 gets 15,003 hits
  • "chief hogsett" baseball for 1925–1944 gets 5,048 hits
  • "elon hogsett" tigers pitcher for 1929–1936 gets 9,122 hits
  • "chief hogsett" tigers pitcher for 1929–1936 gets 1,933 hits

As there is no current article named "Elon Hogsett" on Wikipedia, this would be a straightforward move, with "Chief Hogsett" continuing to redirect users to the new article title. Comments welcome—please reply in the below section. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmoore5556 (talkcontribs) 13:06, May 8, 2021 (UTC)

It appears that Cbl62 expanded this in October 2020. I'm curious to hear their thoughts on the article title. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:15, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Chief HogsettElon Hogsett – Elon Chester Hogsett was primarily referred to as "Elon Hogsett" during his time playing professional baseball (1925–1944). While baseball reference sites such as Baseball-Reference.com and Retrosheet list him (or have previously listed him) as "Chief Hogsett", that name was not used nearly as often as Elon Hogsett by contemporary newspaper reports. The results of searches conducted via newspapers.com are listed on the Talk page. Dmoore5556 (talk) 20:09, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Support - perhaps a closer call than some of the others, but I think the preponderance of the evidence supports the move, unless Cbl62 thinks differently. Go Phightins! 20:10, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
