POV

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but "splendid performance" and "outstanding actor of our time" sounds awfully POV. He's good. --Feitclub 19:39, Sep 15, 2004 (UTC)

The link in Filmography to "Narrow Margin" that was released in 1990, incorrectly links to another movie called "The Narrow Margin" wich was released in 1952. Hackman didn't even play in the 1952 movie.

Yes, it is a redmake, but that does not make the link more accurate. Solbu. 02:03, 3 July 2006 (CET)

Filmography

Is everyone forgetting Hackman's role as the blind hermit in "Young Frankenstein"? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.84.113.95 (talk) 21:06, 7 January 2007 (UTC).

"Award-winning" as peacock term

There's an editor whose determination to correct the wrongs of WP:PEACOCK should be commended. There are, however, potential peacock phrases such as "award-winning" that are okay to use when the phrase is a) accurate and b) followed by the information regarding which award(s) won. The guideline for PEACOCK asks the editor to use common sense; I would like to point out that common sense is what helps the editor to differentiate between a renowned Academy Award winning actor such as Gene Hackman and a local or regional actor who is fluffing their resume by saying "award-winning" when the award is from, say, the local Rotarians. I am again reverting the PEACOCK tag here. There is no problem with this page. Binksternet (talk) 14:32, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Behind Enemy Lines

Gene hackmen was also in a film called "Behind Enemy Lines" co-starring with Owen Wilson —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.212.255.53 (talk) 05:37, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Which University of Illinois branch?

One paragraph says that he studied journalism at the University of Illinois. The next paragraph says that Gene Hackman told Larry King that he never studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has not even ever set foot there. So which branch of the University of Illinois (if any) is the one where he studied? -- ATBS —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.112.25.123 (talk) 10:15, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Per a radio interview broadcast on WTNT AM570 on October 9, 2009, Gene Hackman stated that he never attended University Of Illinois, and that the source of that rumor was a false statement by himself in an interview during the casting of "Bonnie and Clyde". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.197.7.117 (talk) 12:51, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Hackman as pilot

Not mentioned in the article is Hackman's flying. I'm not sure what license he has (Private, Commercial, Air Line Transport) but I know at one point he owned a Pitts (a small bi-plane used for aerobatics). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.1.46.32 (talk) 01:15, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

English heritage

Why do so many Wikipedians hate to see anything other than "Irish" in a person's ethnicity? There are literally thousands of entries categorised as Irish, most with no proof and relating to a relative going back generations. But when it comes to, say, English, Wikipedians insist that is too far back to be notable unless one or more parent was born in the country. Hackman has 25% English blood. That is more notable than having an Irish antecedant 200 years ago. Too much xenophobia and racism here. 195.92.40.49 17:49, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Readded after it was deleted. Those with some intelligence and a minimum amount of nationalistic obsession acknowledge that ethnicity is probably notable only when going back one or two generations. If one or more parent or grandparent is of a different race or nationality then that has some bearing on the individual. Half of the several thousand "Irish Americans" on this site rely on an antecedant going back three to ten generations and ignore any other race or nationality in their heritage. As you say, Hackman has 25% English blood. I'd say that was notable. 86.17.211.191 19:31, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Can someone please provide a reliable source (WP:RS) for this if restoring it into the article? The source posted before was a blog. All Hallow's Wraith 08:25, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
The fact about living with his grandmother has been there donkey's years. We add that she is English and all of a sudden it must be deleted. why not add a {{Fact}} tag like most other unsourced claims on this site including the several thousand claims of "Irish"!! O'Wikipedia or what..... 86.17.211.191 19:46, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
I added a reference about the fact that he lived with his grandmother. All Hallow's Wraith 00:06, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
http://www.hellomagazine.com/profiles/genehackman/ Of course, now someone will find evidence that one of his ascendants from about 300 years ago once pointed to Ireland on a map, so he will become "Irish American", thus instantly disqualifying any association with Britain or indeed any other country as evidence of his ethnicity. That is how things work round here, right? 86.17.211.148 (talk) 01:10, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Hackman's father is of German descent - the family Hackman/Hackmann are immigrants from Germany. 91.65.16.183 (talk) 19:46, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Lede

There are too many roles listed in the lede. He is not best known for all of these. It should be trimmed down to the 3-5 most important roles. ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 19:09, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Having received no response in more than 6 months, I am going to reduce that list. ---RepublicanJacobiteTheFortyFive 04:24, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Jewish

Is Gene Jewish, he might be....--155.33.65.20 (talk) 13:38, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Well, Hackman(n) is either German or German-Jewish. I'd normally say it's German, but his father's name was Ezra, which is Hebrew. Of course, other Hebrew names like David or Daniel are also used by non-Jews, but Ezra is a specific Hebrew name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.153.200.190 (talk) 01:35, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
Gene Hackman is not Jewish. The surname "Hackman", in this case, is (non-Jewish) German, and Gene's great-grandfather was from a Pennsylvania Dutch background. As for the name "Ezra", it was used by non-Jews also. Gene Hackman's great-grandfather was named Ezra Hackman, and I would guess that's where his father received his own middle name from. Just so you know, the link to 'Night Moves' goes to a Bob Seger album, not the movie. --Aerothorn 05:23, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

There's another incorrect link: under "Other Work and Retirement", Mr. Hackman is listed as being the author of "Justice for None". The link redirects to "All Saints (Season 11)". This seems to be incorrect on a larger level, as entering the same title in the search field also links to "All Saints (Season 11)". Sorry, but I'm not sure how to go about correcting this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.203.150.100 (talk) 16:33, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Retired in lead

There seems to be an concerted effort to put Hackman's retirement in the lead paragraph. My opinion is that this seems presumptive and incorrect -- and not how other actors who are not active are classified. So I've reverted these edits. If you disagree, please discuss it here so there might be conversation around this issue, versus going back and forth. Thanks. - Erika BrillLyle (talk) 22:50, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
