Ask Me Another Podcast

[edit]

Should it be noted somewhere in the article that Coulton is a host and the house musician on the NPR podcast “Ask Me Another?” —Tckma (talk) 17:09, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Left 4 Dead 2

[edit]

The Left 4 Dead 2 reference in the article (speaking about Still Alive) was wrong. It said that the name of the game was "Left For Dead 2". I changed it and made it link to the relevant wiki page.

RE: Your Brains

[edit]

As a non-Wiki type of person... it seems sort of redundant to have the Left 4 Dead 2 Jukebox thing mentioned in 3 or 4 areas of the article already.--136.142.46.33 (talk) 15:44, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube

[edit]

There are a large number of YouTube videos of Coulton. There also seems to be some sort of project for fans to create music videos using his songs and copyright-free images. Would someone be willing to write that up? I would, but Bob from the office down the hall wants to see me about something. ;-) Brendano 20:58, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Popular Science was hosting a contest a few weeks ago for the best videos for "I Feel Fantastic." I assume the others are from similar conests... Of course he talks about them on jonathancoulton.com... --Mrcolj 12:10, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unverifiable content

[edit]

I removed this: Jonathan Coulton the son of the thunder and the wide-open plain. He eats sixteen eggs for breakfast, and he beat up your big brother. He has played in concert halls in Danzig, Sebastapol and Kinshasa and by command of Michael_I_of_Romania.

In his spare time, Jonathan Coulton likes to fight bears. In fact, before he became a professional software programmer, part-time performer, and contributing troubador to popular technical publications, his dream was to be a professional bear fighter. Unfortunately, however, there really isn't much of a demand for bear fighting. Not anymore. Not since the Swiss-Austrian legend of the game, Andre "the Bear-Fighting Maniac" Schvitzkein was mauled to death during a public demonstration in the animal husbandry exhibition of the 1889 Leipzig Circus. So, having been born to the wrong century, Coulton had to pursue other interests. Still, he sometimes steals off by himself, to one of America's national parks, and seek out a particularly ferocious grizzly, or an agitated brown bear, for a little one-on-one.

Clever, but I'm not sure that can be factually verified. Jon 20:25, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This article (including above but other stuff too) has the flavor of being written by the subject of the article. I'm not sure why this guy would have such an extensive article with peculiar specifics unless he was writing it himself. JettaMann (talk) 14:47, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The bear nonsense smacks of vandalism, and there's nothing left in the article that's along those lines. If the article said that he was raised by wolves, though, that would suggest it was written, or at least inspired, by John Hodgman; it's a running gag of his. The fact is that Jonathan Coulton has an internet-based following and is especially popular among programmers. His web site has its own wiki, inspired by TMBW. It's not as large a demographic as Justin Bieber fans, but it's nerdier and more technical, and on that basis more inclined to edit Wikipedia articles. MisterFancyPants (talk) 16:20, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Creative Commons

[edit]

Suggest adding that since Jonathan Coulton uses Creative Commons for licensing, a number of music_videos have been creating using his songs. Machinima such as Mike "Spiff" Booth's videos for Re: Your Brains and Just As Long As Me are created using computer generated graphics from games such as World of Warcraft. There are also videos in the style of Coulton's Flickr which use Creative Commons licensed photographs from Flickr as a slideshow accompaniment to the song. The Jonathan Coulton Project has created a number of these.

POV

[edit]

A simple read of this page reveals it to be woefully biased towards the subject. I reverted some of the "critical overview" added by Hippobabe.--Drat (Talk) 11:51, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I get the feeling that it could even use more, yet. As I read through this it still felt like it was constantly complimenting the guy. Though, that's easy to say for the guy who isn't editing himself. --82.26.181.110 (talk) 18:51, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sources

[edit]

Most of the sources cited in this article are trivial. The mention on The Daily Show establishes little other than that some guy on TV thought it was funny (a guy who he worked with on a track). The Slashdot and Penny Arcade mentions are extremely trivial (how many millions of things have they linked to?).--Drat (Talk) 07:13, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, Drat. Are you suggesting that the sources or the subject are non-notable? I don't see any claims in the article that need stronger references - I mean, we're not claiming the man is God.  :-) Ppe42 12:15, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
He has niche appeal, so it seems reasonable that he'd have niche notices, especially this early in his career. Do articles about singer-songwriters that specialize in songs about, say, old steam engines rather than science and technology have more "non-trivial" citations? Give him a few decades and maybe his cite list will resemble Leslie Fish's.Brendano 20:58, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The Penny Arcade mention was actually critical to his popularity "achieving liftoff". First PA mentioned his most geek-friendly songs several times then they invited him to perform at each PAX (Penny Arcade eXpo). Which was the first venue where Coulton played to "an audience of thousands". --Blogjack (talk) 16:16, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the following external links. They can be reintegrated into the article as references, or not at all.

The majority of these that still work and are primarily about Jonathan Coulton have been added to the ODP at http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Bands_and_Artists/C/Coulton%2C_Jonathan/Wrathchild (talk) 15:31, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Portal Themesong

[edit]

As far as I'm aware, this Jonathan Coulton wrote the themesong/end-credits song for Valve's Portal. Don't know if that's important enough to add, and I don't trust myself beyond minor grammar edits, so hopefully some hero will ride out of the sun and insert mention of the game. 71.107.0.109 07:55, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, he did do the end credits. There's a bunch of comments over on his blog entry regarding the orange box about it. I can't find a source for the song title, so I changed the sentence about it to reflect that, and linked to the voice talent's page. I took the GCF file containing the song apart and the filename is indeed portal_still_alive.mp3, but that doesn't mean that is in fact the song title.Thalakan 15:16, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I just took apart the credits script, and it does indeed refer to the song as Still Alive. Corrected. Thalakan 15:45, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quoting the article: He is also credited for writing the song "Still Alive" This seems to me to give the impression that he didn't actually write it, people just think he did. So I've changed it to He also wrote the song "Still Alive" instead. --Islomaniac 973 16:27, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now I come to think of it, a reference would be nice. Can anyone eg get a screenshot from the credits for me, or find the credits online? Kthxbai. --Islomaniac 973 16:39, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This song is also in the game 'Chime', from the first humble indie bundle, screenshot here. Efreak (talk) 16:43, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Overlap

[edit]

The intro paragraph and the "Discography" section appear to have a lot of overlapping/redundant information. Anybody want to tackle? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrguido45 (talkcontribs) 15:55, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reworked

[edit]

I did some major reworking to the article - In addition to some minor rewording, I took out the double references, and moved material around to more appropriate sections. Any other suggestions for things to do? -AtionSong (talk) 23:21, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Paul R. Potts (talk) 14:51, 8 July 2008 (UTC): A note on his policy for live recording might be interesting; I think he is unusual like the Grateful Dead in allowing recording of his live shows, depending on the policy of the venue, but I can't find a hard reference for this.[reply]

Edit request from Thimmylicious, 22 April 2011 Adding song to the list.

[edit]

Please add that the duo Ellen McLain and Jonathan Coulton also contribute to Portal 2 with a song called 'Want You Gone'.

religion

Anyone know his religion or spiritual beliefs? Just curious. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.171.130.32 (talk) 05:02, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Re: Your Brains

[edit]

Does anyone know what year this song was released? Was it the same year as the game it appeared in? Appreciate it! L1ght5h0w (talk) 16:01, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Its first album appearance was on Thing a Week Two, released in 2006. So before Left 4 Dead 2, if that's what you meant. Thing a Week songs were apparently all written in 2006. Here's the article on JoCopedia, for reference. --BDD (talk) 21:09, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Glee Controversy

[edit]

Glee used his acoustic cover of Baby Got Back without his permission so there might be some edits coming soon about his reaction to it. Ambiesushi (talk) 18:38, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Here's his official reaction: http://www.jonathancoulton.com/2013/01/26/baby-got-back-glee-style/

And now he's "released a cover of their cover of his cover". It's pretty easy to find news articles referencing this entire thing so someone will get to it eventually, perhaps me. DotHectate (talk) 15:28, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Someone needs to edit that portion soon, it's terrible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.26.155.203 (talk) 17:36, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I would normally just add the dead link template to reference #32 (http://spaceparanoids.net/2010/12/shopvac/), as the link leads to a 404. However, it appears that the wayback machine does have an archive of that page--but it naturally does not include the relevant portion of it, namely, the video. As a result, should the reference and accompanying information simply be removed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.5.224.19 (talk) 15:36, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

JoCo Cruise

[edit]

It seems odd to me that there is no mention of the JoCo Cruise (formerly JoCo Cruise Crazy) which is a annual geek cruise that has been going on since 2011 and in 2017 will have control over the entire cruise ship. There are lots of articles out there that discuss the cruise and the various entertainers that have participated. Here is the blog post where fans voted for the cruise: http://www.jonathancoulton.com/2009/10/23/hypothetical-question/ And here is the announcement of the first cruise: http://www.jonathancoulton.com/2010/07/14/joco-cruise-crazy-2/ Here is an independent announcement of the next cruise: http://laughingsquid.com/jonathan-coulton-announces-the-lineup-for-joco-cruise-2017/ Here is a wired magazine article about the 4th cruise (2014): https://www.wired.com/2014/12/nerd-cruise/ This may or may not deserve it's own page but it seems like a section on Jonathan Coulton's page is a good starting point. And is definitely a noteworthy thing when discussing JoCo. Vernhart (talk) 02:01, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, it's grown to such a magnitude that I think it might warrant its own article. It has hosted many well-known performers, including Peter Sagal, Wil Wheaton, They Might Be Giants, Rachel Bloom, and Aimee Mann, to name a few. Daishoryujin95 (talk) 01:21, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
