I've read an article that wrote that Limitanei were formed out of peasants-soldiers. I think the term peasant-soldiers is horribly wrong , though there's some truth in it. He might have been talking about germanic tribes that joined the army. This is just a thought not a certenty. A more modest way of talking about this issue would be to describe these armies as man not being Roman by origin. Thus probably not owning the Roman Citizen rights.

The term was found in: Roman Gold and Development of the Early Germanic Kingdoms (ed.) Bente Magnus 2001 Almqvist & wiksell international , stockholm sweden

Not really, some of the limitanei are actually Roman legions. And additionally, citizen rights are given to all free person in the Roman empire during the reign of Caracalla. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.74.77.75 (talk) 14:39, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If they have mail armor, then they aren't light infantry. Ananiujitha (talk) 03:17, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To Do

[edit]
  • We need more and better sources.
  • It would help if someone with access to Luttwak's works on the Roman and Byzantine armies can identify, update, and reference the claims associated with his theories.
  • It would help to include more sources on the Western limitanei, and any similar organizations in the successor states. Ananiujitha (talk) 18:54, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • To help keep track of things during the edits, I'm currently asking some questions directly in the text. It's a bit messy, but it should help clear things up faster. Ananiujitha (talk) 03:23, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Farmer-Soldiers?

[edit]

Strobel's work seems to prove that the limitanei weren't supposed to be farmer-soldiers at least until after 458. Ananiujitha (talk) 23:01, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The limitanei included river flotillas

[edit]

The Roman military articles separate the Roman army, and Roman navy, but that may be a modern imposition and may not reflect the ancient structure of the late Roman military. What to do? Ananiujitha (talk) 17:46, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please clear up Luttwak's theories?

[edit]

I don't have a copy of his book. According to the article, he thought the limitanei operated together with "provincial field armies." But the limitanei were the provincial [border] armies. Is he saying the limitanei operated with regional [diocese or multiple dioceses] field armies? Is he assuming there is an intermediate category? Or what?
