Number of awards

[edit]

I don't understand why the Disney Company continually insists that Walt won 32 Oscars. That figure was given in the 1986 TV special "Disney Goes to the Oscars" and more recently on D23, the official Disney Fan Club website (http://d23.disney.go.com/news/2010/03/oscar-winning-walt/). Walt won 22 Oscars of 59 competitive nominations, plus he was given 4 honorary awards. Why can't the company he founded figure that out? Andlaw99 (talk) 21:27, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's a great question, and I really do not know the answer. However, maybe it is a matter of semantics. Perhaps some of the Oscars are "officially" awarded to the individual named Walt Disney, while others are awarded to the company named Walt Disney. Perhaps that is the source of the discrepancy. Or maybe some other individuals won Oscars while they were in the employ of the Walt Disney company ... and, as such, the company "counts" those in their total Oscars awarded to "Walt Disney" (the man or the organization). Just a thought. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 01:43, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I just read that link you provided. It discusses many different Academy Awards won by many different Disney films. As just one example, it mentions that Julie Andrews won an Oscar for Best Actress for a Disney film, Mary Poppins. Perhaps Oscars such as these (i.e., those not won by Walt Disney himself, personally) are being counted in their totals? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 01:53, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
