London Has Fallen

[edit]

London Has Fallen (2015) may be a candidate for this list if it depicts the drone strike that apparently changes the lives of three brothers in the film. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 17:46, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Runaway

[edit]

I removed Runaway (1984 film) since I could not find a reliable source highlighting this aspect, so I've removed it for now. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 18:49, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just added this title, using this reference http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/content.asp?Bnum=1038 but there are additional citations available, including the film itself (widely available on video). For example, https://www.denofgeek.com/us/movies/runaway/248041/michael-crichtons-runaway-1984s-other-killer-robot-movie — Preceding unsigned comment added by 136.181.195.29 (talk) 21:15, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This Means War

[edit]

I cannot include This Means War myself as I have not seen the film but according to the trailer, a drone was shot down and exploded mid-air by a single bullet. Donnie Park (talk) 22:01, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Donnie Park, thanks for the additions! I added a reference for Four Lions and found one to use for This Means War. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 18:56, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Blue Thunder remake

[edit]

Thanks, Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 13:55, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Stealth

[edit]

Stealth (film) is an obvious candidate for this odd list, someone more apt to concise descriptions should add it. 67.70.84.88 (talk) 09:08, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good suggestion! I will see if I can find a reliable source for including this. Erik II (talk | contrib) (ping me) 11:12, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've added Stealth to the list. Thanks for suggesting! Erik II (talk | contrib) (ping me) 15:10, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Top Gun 2

[edit]

Collider reports that drone warfare will be part of Top Gun 2, for which filming not has begun yet. If it does, a stand-alone article can be created and also listed here. Erik II (talk | contrib) (ping me) 20:40, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How exactly is this a notable subject?

[edit]

Drones (both military and civilian 'toys') are becoming ubiquitous. It is therefore inevitable that they will appear in feature films. Accordingly, a list of films in which they appear amounts to little more than trivia. There might possibly be merit in a list of films in which drones have played a significant part - as demonstrated by significant coverage in third party sources (e.g. reviews of the movie in question which indicate that drones were central to the plot), but otherwise I can see no justification for an article. AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:17, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there is merit in this topic as reflected by some of the sources focusing on drones in films, so it is a notable topic. We can discuss criteria for including certain films on this list. WP:NOTESAL says, "The entirety of the list does not need to be documented in sources for notability, only that the grouping or set in general has been. Because the group or set is notable, the individual items in the list do not need to be independently notable." This is why I've used reliable sources to this extent. For example, I recently added Poltergeist because several reviews mentioned a drone being used in the film; I had just used one of them. For the more limited uses of drones, do we want to include more references to further validate their inclusion? I cannot think of a good way to group the films or categorize them that would not be original research. Can you think of some list criteria or grouping? Erik II (talk | contrib) (ping me) 18:31, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NOTESAL also states that "One accepted reason why a list topic is considered notable is if it has been discussed as a group or set by independent reliable sources". Can you point to sources giving a general discussion of the presence of drones in films, as opposed to reviews of individual films which comment on the presence of a drone? AndyTheGrump (talk) 19:59, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this talks about Good Kill, Eye in the Sky, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This talks about X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, RoboCop, and The Bourne Legacy. This talks about Good Kill, Eye in the Sky, and the in-development Blue Thunder. Coverage about Top Gun 2 has referenced Good Kill. Eye in the Sky, when released, will probably garner more thematic coverage. This mentions Dirty Wars when covering Good Kill. This mentions Good Kill, Dirty Wars, and Drone. Erik II (talk | contrib) (ping me) 20:06, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough - though I still think that this list risks becoming unmanageable without more stringent criteria for inclusion. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:21, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. In creating these lists, I've struggled to figure out a way to group films better. Here are a couple of alternative approaches I've thought of. One is to separate into subsections, with the most relevant films in the top one (e.g., Good Kill) with more secondary films in the following subsection. Another approach is adding a column that says "Focus" or "Emphasis" or whatever to identify the use of drones as thematic or just a scene, but that seems tricky depending on the film, which is why I mentioned my concern of original research in my initial reply. I don't think we can know how ubiquitous drones may be. They're not exactly part of regular daily lives. Maybe we can do something like relegate the films with toy drones (Poltergeist, Force Majeure) to a footnote. A film like Transformers: Age of Extinction could be removed due to lack of repeat sourcing (I know because I strained to find a source for that one). Erik II (talk | contrib) (ping me) 20:42, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Comedy films could also join the toy-drone instances in being another footnote. Erik II (talk | contrib) (ping me) 20:46, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mohajer

[edit]

I reverted the addition of Mohajer as seen here. While it looks like a candidate for inclusion (IMDb page here), I cannot find a good source outlining the premise for the film to establish its relevance for this list. I suspect that based on the age of the film, it may be more about radio-controlled aircraft than UAVs. Maybe it could be included in a "See also" section as a precursor to the 21st century films, but the need for a good source still remains. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 13:54, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just readded it:

Please see: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-a-drone-and-an-R-C-plane-or-helicopter Also "Mohajer" is the name of an Iranian drone (google it).

These two seem good enough: https://medium.com/war-is-boring/we-got-our-hands-on-a-bootleg-of-irans-weird-drone-movie-1d434ac7348a & http://thearkenstone.blogspot.de/2015/03/mohajer-uav.html

Mentions drones. Waiting for more sources. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 12:57, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Does "X-Men" film belong on list?

[edit]

I'm not presuming to remove someone's list entry—however, the flying mutant-hunting robots in X-Men: Days of Future Past were autonomous, not remote-controlled. Thus I don't think they can be considered drones per se. – AndyFielding (talk) 11:24, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The source that identifies this film as part of a set is The Daily Beast, which is quite reliable. The definition of a drone is quite broad, and it looks like it does not matter if the technology is autonomous or remote-controlled. WarGames: The Dead Code (2008)

[edit]

I remember it was a drone in the game he played against the Ripley. --Sundgot (talk) 22:51, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Flash Gordon

Does this from the Flash Gordon film count as a drone? Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 18:19, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Post-AfD comments

[edit]

With the AfD discussion closed as no-consensus and leaning keep, I'd like to develop inclusion criteria to list films. I'll think on some options. In the meantime, I found a couple more sources:

After some reflection, I will list some possibilities and ping people involved with the AfD discussion or this article's history. Thanks, Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 19:30, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I just came across this article after seeing it linked as a "see also" from Force Majeure, a film in which a drone appears for about 15 seconds, and read the AfD. I agree with the view many of the participants (including those favoring keep) expressed that the criteria for this list ought to be made more stringent. There seems to be a place for this article on Wikipedia, but work needs to be done (not only here, but in articles linking to here) to reduce the trivia aspect. - Sdkb (talk) 20:24, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
