Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on October 16, 2008.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that former places of worship in Brighton and Hove, England, have been converted into a pub, a screen-printing factory, an art gallery and a sheltered housing complex, among other things?

Proposed expansion—heads-up

[edit]

I have been preparing a large expansion to this article in my sandbox for what feels like the last 6,213,356 years (!). I plan to copy the content across, incorporating any bits from the current article which I haven't yet included. Also, to reflect the diversity of places of worship and the citywide coverage, I propose a name change to Churches and places of worship in Brighton and Hove. There are several churches I haven't written about yet, and possibly others I've missed out or forgotten about. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 12:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good, and I for one would support the change of name (presuming we're not treading on the toes of any other articles such as a Hove one — but they should/could be merged in anyway). Would you like to open up the sandbox version for comments first, or is the plan to "be bold"? ;-) – Kieran T (talk) 15:36, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be a bit bold, in that I plan to move it across tonight or tomorrow, but I'd greatly appreciate any comments, edits etc ... the sandbox is here (ignore the misleading title; I reused an old railway-ticket-related sandbox!) Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 16:48, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your tweaks Kieran. I have made the move now. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 21:47, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Christ THe King picture?

[edit]

Is the building on the left in File:NEQ_014_03-02-2007.jpg Clarendon Center, where this evangelical group have their meetings? Circeus (talk) 19:24, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is. I've now got a "proper" picture of it (i.e. showing the whole building), which I can upload to replace the pic of the building in Hove which they don't use any more. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 19:27, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Christ the King, Patcham

[edit]

That church is mentioned in the summary for St Thomas More, but not listed. I searched for more information and it appears to now be occupied by another Elim Pentecostal congregation. You actually already have a picture of it. Circeus (talk) 00:37, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good spot - I had totally forgotten about it! I think there's some info in the All Saints Church, Patcham article which I can spin out. Looks like you're right about the Elim congregation moving in: it's the congregation who had been displaced from the Balfour Road church, which I found had been demolished when I went there to photograph it a few weeks ago. Not sure if that newsletter is a reliable source. This looks useful, but is a dead link at the moment. I'll add this at lunchtime. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 08:49, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a HTML format of that parish newsletter. Also, this diocesan document lists the redundancy and dates it to 2006. Circeus (talk) 16:45, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent; refs/details added accordingly. I've also put in a couple of disused churchs and another extant one I'd forgotten. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 22:15, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Preston

[edit]

Please disambiguate Preston Village from Preston Park - it's going to be confusing otherwise, even without the Lancashire Preston. I was going to do this myself, but I'm not actually sure the right link is consistently used. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 14:24, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll get on to this ASAP. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 22:09, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
All corrected now. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 14:13, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move?

[edit]

A beautiful article, as your preceding list on Crawley; but shouldn't it be moved to List of places of worship in Brighton and Hove, like with Crawley and like the new list you are making with Mid Sussex?--Aldux (talk) 15:08, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, definitely; I meant to do it earlier, but it slipped my mind! Thanks for the reminder. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 15:31, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done. All redirects fixed as well. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 16:01, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Downs Baptist Church, Woodingdean

[edit]

Was looking something different and came across this group. They built a church in Woodingdean which they stopped using in 1991. Not clear whether it's still standing. They currently have no premises of their own Circeus (talk) 23:25, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I found out a bit about them; it seems they are now meeting in the local primary school. I looked around for the building when I was in Woodingdean on one of the photography missions for the article, but it seems to have gone. The community greengrocer they run is still there, though, as is another shop unit! As they no longer have a dedicated place of worship and the old one isn't there, I think they're outside the scope of the list. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 21:44, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I know. I just had no mean whatsoever to tell whether there was still a church. Circeus (talk) 01:39, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Religious affiliation

[edit]

A very impressive list; but I have a feeling that a useful integration to the section on "religious affiliation" would be to try to quantify the numbers of the various Christian denominations, especially since the overwhelming majority of places of worships are churches and just saying how many are Christians leaves a sort of unsatisfying impression.--Aldux (talk) 16:13, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree in principle; unfortunately that sort of info doesn't seem to be available anywhere. The Census would be the only source that might have a reliable record of this data, but in practice it doesn't: the "Religion" question is optional, and any answer that is written in the "Other" box on the form is manually reallocated to either the "Any Other Religion" category or to the most appropriate broader category. So if somebody wrote "Methodist" and didn't tick "Christian", they would still be recorded as Christian in the Census data because they would be manually added to the Christian total. For some of the larger denominations, figures might be available at higher levels (e.g. for the Diocese of Chichester as a whole), but they would not be drilled down to lower levels such as specific deaneries or parishes. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 15:31, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see; I was hoping that the major Christian denominations, i.e. Anglicans and Catholics, may have kept data on churchgoing attendancy per district, but I was wrong. Ciao, --Aldux (talk) 17:51, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bristol Road Methodist Church

[edit]

Just a notice: the Church is Grade II listed [1].--Aldux (talk) 01:10, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well spotted; thanks. I'll quickly do an article for it (there's not much out there, but a couple of books and the IoE listing have enough detail between them). It was listed on the same day as the nearby St Mark's, which I'm also doing an article for today; English Heritage must have been doing a lot of work in that area on that day! Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 09:53, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder... Should this article recenty written on a former snagogue be added to the list of the former places of worship? At least seen from the outside, while converted to flats it has maintained at the very least the same facade. What do you think?--Aldux (talk) 19:48, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, definitely. I'll sort this out on Saturday (although I'll need to go down to Brighton at some point and get a pic); should be able to expand the article itself as well. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 20:25, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, just thinking about it, that street is really narrow and awkward for photography, so I might have to take that one from Flickr if it's suitably licensed. It's a listed building (Grade II) as well (480561), so it can have a WP:HSITES infobox. Will try to work on this tomorrow after getting back from photographing yet more churches :) Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 20:33, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The licence is OK being CC-BY. I'll upload it tonight to commons. And good travels!--Aldux (talk) 21:01, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's great—thanks. Hoping to fill in about 15 gaps here with a quick trip to East Grinstead and surrounding villages ... I need several buses to be reliable! Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 22:33, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
