Fedora

[edit]

There is also discussion to include MATEDE in fedora http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.devel/157317 81.97.59.215 (talk) 14:24, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

request move

[edit]

The MATE desktop environment takes it's name from the mate beverage common in South America (see http://matsusoft.com.ar/projects/mate/index.html in fine: "La filosofia del proyecto se basa en el rituál del [Mate]". Even when the author is not a good speller (the word "ritual" does not carry a diacritic 'á'), maté is plain wrong and implies a stressing of the last syllabe which has another whole meaning in Spanish (I killed).

I think the same arguments that made the requested (and approved) move Yerba maté -> Yerba mate should apply here and this entry should be MATE_(desktop_environment) with a redirection from MATÉ_(desktop_enviroment) and maybe a note on pronunciation like: "(Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmate])".

The official spelling of the project is MATÉ, so that is what Wikipedia follows. I also think that the name is written that way so that it's not confused with the English word 'mate'. CodeCat (talk) 19:51, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Then the "official spelling" is wrong. The original creator has said that "mate" is correct, not "maté." Besides, if people are concerned with confusing "mate" with the English word "mate," shouldn't they also be concerned that "maté" means "I killed" in Spanish? (And the English word "mate" does not have negative connotations, anyway: it is used all the time to refer to friends or companions, e.g. "I'm heading off to the game with my mates." A spouse is also a mate. It is easily understood in context and is not confused with any sexual meanings.) The time to fix the problem is now, when the product is still young. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcellius (talkcontribs) 21:26, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe, but how is this the place to discuss that? Wikipedia only documents the name chosen by the project, we're not responsible for it. If you don't like the chosen name you should contact the project. CodeCat (talk) 14:35, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do recall it being called MATÉ on the website previously, although something has changed in the last month or so: their website now simply calls it MATE. The official website, and every reference in the article spells it MATE over MATÉ, so I'm going to be bold and move the article. However, if there is a disagreement about this, or there is some key thing I'm overlooking, by all means please correct me on this and we can move forward from there. - SudoGhost 10:05, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

gnome 2 unmaintained?

[edit]

The article says "now unmaintained code base of GNOME 2". However there are linux distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux that are committed to supporting Gnome 2 for another 5 or 6 years. Maybe "deprecated" would be a better word. --194.36.2.62 (talk) 12:37, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

supporting is not the same as maintaining — Preceding unsigned comment added by OMPIRE (talkcontribs) 16:55, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling?

[edit]

Wasn't the window-manager itself christened "marco" instead? -- 80.152.185.223 (talk) 08:45, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comparison with cinnamon

[edit]

It would be helpful if someone updated this article so as to compare with Cinnamon_(user_interface) due to the Linux Mint choice of one or the other. DGerman (talk) 21:42, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation?

[edit]

I'm absolutely sure that MATE is not pronounced /mhteɪ/ in English. As far as I know /mht/ isn't even possible under English phonotactics. This must be an error, but I don't know what the correct pronunciation -- maybe /'mæteɪ/? Imerologul Valah (talk) 22:28, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I asked a Spanish person (who said [ˈmate] justas in this article) and followed their advice as closely as I could. But how any other English speaker pronounces it I couldn't say. Ewx (talk) 07:58, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 5 September 2020

MATE (software)MATEMATE formerly redirected here, I changed it because a move request was never made. But taking a look at Mate (disambiguation), there are no other topics referred to with this exact capitalization, which is why GNOME does not redirect to Gnome (disambiguation) either. - CHAMPION (talk) (contributions) (logs) 01:12, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Relisting. Jerm (talk) 03:26, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • no Disagree Unlike GNOME MATE is a extremely popular word in English language used as a noun and a verb. Searching on Google for Mate/MATE serves up top results for the word in English language as well as the drink. Also the software was named after the plant/drink and not the other way around and the plant/drink seems to be more notable than MATE (software). Whereas in the case of GNOME, all google search results point to the GNOME software. So the arguments that hold for GNOME does not hold for MATE. Mate capitalised or not would be read and understood by most people as the English word and not the MATE (software). So it's best that it points to the disambiguation page.Joejose1 (talk) 13:23, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose and Alternative move to Mate (software) this is a stylism not an anacronym. In ictu oculi (talk) 12:08, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
i.e. it is a stylism. In ictu oculi (talk) 16:13, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Even if it were, that is not a valid reason for it to be moved to that title, compare with this, it is similar here, sources overwhelmingly capitalize it as "MATE" and not "Mate". - CHAMPION (talk) (contributions) (logs) 23:58, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
