Moving

[edit]

she converted to orthodoxy and changed her name (shortly) before her marriage. Thus, Maria Alexandrovna is her pre-marital name, and also very clearly the name she was best known. Therefore I feel that the article (now Marie of Hesse and by Rhine) could be renamed Maria Alexandrovna of Hesse. 217.140.193.123 6 July 2005 07:53 (UTC)

IMO those parenthetical disambiguations are messy. As this "Maria Alexandrovna (Marie of Hesse)" is already very close to Maria Alexandrovna of Hesse, please move this to that heading. Unnecessary to use parentheses when one word, "Hesse", instead, makes the same. 217.140.193.123 16:51, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I find the present title acceptable, and preferable to that suggested above by an anonymous user. Deb 17:51, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The correct way for this title is "Maximilienna of Hesse and the Rhine (Maria Alexandrovna)". Having her birth name in front and the name she accepted in Russia in parentheses. Popov 2000

Requested move

[edit]

I disagree. WP naming conventions dictate that the deceased wife of a sovereign should be named with her maiden name and country. Ex: Mary of Teck, Alice of the United Kingdom. Not to mention, this current title is ambiguous with Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. Switching these to Maria Alexandrovna of Hesse and Maria Alexandrovna of Russia would provide some disambiguation. --Matjlav(talk) 20:46, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: moved to Maria Alexandrovna (Marie of Hesse). There's also a consensus to move Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine back to Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine (1874–1878) and redirect the old page to this title. Maria Alexandrovna (Marie of Hesse and by Rhine)Marie of Hesse and by Rhine – This proposed title is in line with WP:CONSORTS, and it's also unambiguous. The present title is bad because it uses parenthesis to give alternate name of the subject, but parenthesis should be used for WP:parenthetical disambiguation instead.
