Surprised about the different application of "progressive" in Hip-Hop

In the other genres of music, "progressive" seems to imply an expansion of the range of structures and sounds for the music itself. Had I tried to define "progressive rap" without coming to this page, I would have assumed it was synonymous with "indie rap" such as Anticon or Def Jux.
