Her common name was Shona Bell. Yes, scientific papers commonly use a middle initial for disambiguation purposes, but outside of science, her middle name or middle initial was never used. Examples are the heading of her obituary, this science paper about "Women in New Zealand geoscience", this National Library entry, and this 1950s newspaper article.
