First priest

[edit]

How can it say that he was the first Catholic priest born in British America, when he was ordained in 1800 by John Carroll, who was himself born in Maryland and was ordained in 1761? —Akrabbimtalk 13:09, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Akrabbim: John Carroll was born in the Maryland, but he spent much of his early life in Europe, which is where he was ordained a priest. Ergo Sum 15:14, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've reworded the appropriate places to make this clearer. Ergo Sum 15:33, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that makes sense now, thanks. I made an error report on the main page to reword it there as well. —Akrabbimtalk 15:40, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Establishment"

[edit]

The second sentence says Matthews was "influential in the establishment of Catholicism in Washington, D.C." The problem with this formulation is that it sounds like Catholicism became the established (state) religion of the District, which I don't believe is true. If it is true, please give a cite; otherwise, please clarify the sentence. --Trovatore (talk) 17:33, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'll change the blurb, thanks for the report. - Dank (push to talk) 17:44, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Go figure! M13kd2 (talk) 19:55, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Repetitive notes

[edit]

Is it really necessary to have the same note included three times? "[a] The Matthews surname is spelled in some contemporaneous sources as "Mathews".[1][2]" appears three times in the first five paragraphs, including two successive paragraphs. Seems redundant. --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 22:14, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Piledhigheranddeeper: I've removed one of the main text footnotes, since it wasn't really needed there. Ergo Sum 22:36, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ann Teresa Mathews

[edit]

The source said Ann Teresa Mathews is his sister, which is obviously wrong, since this means Ann's father is only four years old when Ann is born. Ann should be William's aunt. GZWDer (talk) 19:50, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
