Career
[edit]Early Career
[edit]Born in Newport Beach, California, Birnbaum started to attend the University of California in Berkeley where he played for the California Golden Bears.[1] While playing for the Golden Bears Birnbaum made the change from a midfielder to a defender after playing his high-school career as a midfielder.[1] Then, in 2013, he suffered a strained LCL which kept him out the entirety of his senior year and fourth season at the university. However, despite that setback, Birnbaum stayed in college soccer for one more season in 2013.[1]
D.C. United
[edit]On January 16, 2014 it was announced that Birnbaum had been drafted by D.C. United of Major League Soccer in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.[2]
