Opinion on Article

[edit]

I was wondering if you would be able to give me an opinion on an article that I have been updating. I thought that with your knowledge and experience that you would be able to shed some light on this.

Apparently, First National Bank of Omaha is writting like an advertisement, but I'm not exactly sure how (maybe because I was writing it). Would you be able to take a look at it and provide some feedback on this?

Thank you for your time. Sweet Pea 1981 (talk) 15:00, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Self-published book

[edit]

I'm working on compiling a book containing information about almost all Non-indigenous ethnic groups living or working in Pakistan. The population of a particular ethnic group would be obtain respectively from their diplomatic missions in Pakistan including regions with significant populations, languages spoken and religious affiliations. I'm not very good with writing so it would be great, if you would like to collaborate with me.--116.71.53.25 (talk) 06:20, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Strathdon Caledonia Pipe Band. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Strathdon Caledonia Pipe Band. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:05, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Credit Foncier, &c.

[edit]

Thanks for your response to my edit of Credit Foncier of America. I came to it by way of Columbus, Nebraska, which was one step beyond Loup Canal, the article that I actually started out editing. In the course of that, I decided that I needed to put the canal in the context of Columbus history; so right now I'm researching that topic. Have the section up to about 1866, so I've only got sixty or seventy years to go before the canal gets dug...

Hard to reconcile a lot of these sources, and I've already found myself forced to write something ambiguous just because I couldn't decide which source to trust-- the number of original settlers of Columbus is variously given ranging from twelve to fifteen. The Train holdings in Columbus might turn into another such case-- Larsen et al. say 7000 lots; Curry says it was "several hundred"; and Andreas's History of Nebraska quotes one David Anderson as calling it 800 acres. If you'd re-edited my edit to say something non-specific like "substantial holdings", I wouldn't have objected. (For what it's worth, Curry agrees with Larsen et al. on the size of the Credit Foncier holdings in Omaha and Council Bluffs, though I don't know what her sources were for any of the numbers.)

--Ammodramus (talk) 19:43, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply and the offer of help. I'll probably take advantage of the latter. I'd like to try to work up good history sections on Columbus, Madison, Norfolk, and Kearney. The library in Norfolk (near where I'm presently staying) has a very decent collection of local histories from eastern Nebraska, and I'd like to take advantage of them. However, some of those are more reliable than others. The Curry book on Platte County seems pretty well researched, but a lot of the others are things like centennial histories put together by the local high school. Not to sneer at them-- among other things, they'll often have had access to the back-files of the local newspaper, and to local oral histories.

The article Martha Collins (poet) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

It does not seem to meet the notability guidelines laid out at WP:AUTHOR

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Tim1357 (talk) 03:00, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 01:47, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism?

[edit]

Don't be ridiculous. Calling my edit vandalism shows a lack of good faith and common sense. The "See also" section ought to contain wikilinks to articles, and no red links (you can read this at your leisure, at WP:SEEALSO). The section as you restored it has blue and red links to categories--for now. Drmies (talk) 17:35, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

      • Thanks, I saw. Copied from the talk page:

Well, I don't want to get into a contest with you over this, and such a compromise seems fine to me. Trust me, I looked around (not just at WP:SEEALSO) to see what other good articles had--and I hope you understand I was a bit miffed at the "RVV" comment. But while I have you, there is no doubt that these Omaha-articles would have been much worse if it hadn't been for your hard work. I'll copy this on your talk page also, since I intend it as a compliment for all to see. ;) Drmies (talk) 14:28, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Lewis and Clark Landing

[edit]

Hey there! I had noticed on the Omaha project page the Lewis and Clark Landing was on the to do list, but it didn't link to the page that has already been created for it. Nebraska photos

[edit]

Still here, and still taking Nebraska photos. I just finished a week-long swing through the Panhandle, which has left me with a ridiculous number of megabytes to edit and upload—but if you've got a request, would be glad to move it to the front of the queue.

The likely bad news for you is that I don't get to Omaha very often, and I suspect that Omaha is where you'd like pictures taken. However, I get there from time to time, and would be happy to get some pictures for you when I'm in that part of the world. Assuming, of course, that you don't want a detailed photographic survey of the neighborhood of 30th and Ames after dark...

--Ammodramus (talk) 00:59, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

By all means, include a wish-list for Omaha. I don't know when I'll next be there, but it may be on short notice, and it'd be a good thing if I had a list ready. Of course, several of the Historic houses in Nebraska are in Omaha.
Can you supply directions or lat-long coordinates for DeWitty, Nebraska, and can you suggest what I might find there? I don't know if there'll be buildings left, but it sounds like the cemetery might be available to photograph—assuming, of course, that it's not out of reach on private land.
Will try to hit Camp Atlanta in the near future: that's close to Kearney. As I recall, there's a single very large red-brick chimney standing in a field northeast of Atlanta, which I assume remains from the camp.
--Ammodramus (talk) 21:00, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Just made a run down to Omaha. Fairly rotten weather, but I was able to get pictures of a number of NRHP sites, for most of which you'd written articles. I've illustrated the articles, but if you want to look through the pictures and see if there are some you'd like better, they're in subcategories of Commons:Category:National Register of Historic Places in Douglas County, Nebraska.
Will probably be back there in February, and will try to get more pictures (weather permitting, of course). If you've got a priority list for photography, please feel free to drop me a line at my talk page.
--Ammodramus (talk) 16:27, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

Antonine Barada

[edit]

I'd like to invite you to respond to my concerns over whether or not Antonine Barada counts as mythological in the article's talk page. Pfhreak (talk) 01:28, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for inviting me this way - its such a rare experience! Sorry if I was short in my reply; I am really not sure how to proceed except rely on the citations. Mari Sandoz was a respected scholar of Nebraska history, and she referred to Barada as a myth, interceded with his true story; she acknowledged the duality of his character. I think that's the tact we should take with this article. • Freechild'sup? 02:44, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Nebraska Territorial Legislature

[edit]

I've just tried to do an internal link to "Nebraska Territorial Legislature" and found that there's no such article. We've got a redirect page Nebraska Territorial Legislature going to Nebraska Legislature. Unfortunately, the target of the redirect contains exactly one sentence about the territorial legislature.

There's a First Nebraska Territorial Legislature, which covers the first session. However, I can't find anything else. This strikes me as a major hole in our coverage of Nebraska.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the territorial history to take on the task of repairing it. Would you consider it? I put this to you because one of the great stories that's going untold is that of the Florence Legislature, and Florence is your turf.

Speaking of various people's turf, I haven't forgotten my promise to try to illustrate some of the articles you listed for me. I keep intending to run down to Atlanta, which is less than an hour away from my place; however, we've been having a run of cloudy drizzly weather, which is suboptimal for color photos of red brick chimneys standing alone in cornfields.

--Ammodramus (talk) 01:55, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the invite Ammodramus. Please check out my humble beginning. There's a lot to add, but this will give us something to start from. It also needs linked out to accordingly. • Freechild'sup? 15:40, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome—after all, I'm inviting you to do a lot of work.
Problem with the humble-beginning link; did you mean to link to Nebraska Territory Legislature? That looks pretty good, and I see you've just done a lot of work on it. I think that "Nebraska Territorial Legislature" should redirect there (or that "Nebraska Territory Legislature" should be moved to "Nebraska Territorial Legislature", as the more usual name). The redirect from "...Territorial..." to Nebraska Legislature doesn't make much sense to me, though we should probably have hatnotes directing people back and forth between the current-legislature and the territorial-legislature articles.
Goodness, it's easy for me to set up big projects for you, isn't it? I'm sorry that I can't provide something more useful than encouragement. Unfortunately, I don't know the history of the territorial legislature at all, and right now I'm in the middle of a reading project on the Pawnee, trying to research for major expansions of Pike-Pawnee Village Site and Massacre Canyon. (In the course of writing Pahuk, which grew out of the Pawnee stuff, I came upon the Neapolis story, and in recounting that I needed to link to the territorial-legislature article, which is why I'm bugging you about it in the first place.)
Thanks for your response; I hope it's not presumptuous of me to be suggesting projects for you like this—
--Ammodramus (talk) 19:18, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Belatedly, thought of something useful that I can do. Once we've settled on what the real territorial-legislature is going to be called, I can go through and check "What links here" and make sure that everything points to the right article. That won't save you a lot of work, but every little bit... Ammodramus (talk) 20:25, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
I forgot about Neapolis! I worked at the Boy Scout summer camp there (near there?) and it was part of the lore... I think there's still a cemetery from the townsite? Good luck with that! One of my favorites was researching Rock Bluff, a ghost town south of Plattsmouth. Mmm mmm! That list of towns on the T.L. page brought some interesting stories out, too. Fun. I'll change everything to territorial legislature. Oh, and finally... please send forward good article topics! I love to dig, and I love obscure history that's lost from modern eyeballs. That's why I've drilled into Omaha so deeply - the city is PACKED with lost history - although I'm afraid I've tapped that vane pretty well. I'll look for more from you! Thanks again. • Freechild'sup? 20:54, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Cool that you did Boy Scout-related stuff near Neapolis. I'd never heard the story, myself. Strangely, there's no state historical marker in commemorating it.
I spent a lot of time on Boy Scout-related websites while I was writing Pahuk, since the Mid-America Council holds an event called "Pahuk Pride". I was trying desperately to tie it to my article, but I think the name's just from the generic Pawnee word for "bluff".
On Camp Atlanta, have you seen a book called Prisoners on the Plains? I recently ran into a copy of it at the McCook library. Among other things, it's got pictures of some of the houses, businesses, etc. that were built using buildings salvaged from the POW camp after the war was over. More things for me to try to photograph...
Thanks again for the work on Nebraska Territorial Legislature. I'll start checking links—and I'll also insert a link into Pahuk. I didn't want to link from a story about the Florence Legislature to an article about the modern Unicameral.

DYK nomination of Swedes in Omaha, Nebraska

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Swedes in Omaha, Nebraska at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 13:38, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I formatted all your references and added sources to a few more unsourced facts. For the future, you may wish to familiarize yourself with WP:Citation templates to fill out references completely. Please pay more attention to the authors' names; why are you abbreviating them by initials when they're spelled out on the books? It's also important to include ISBN numbers, as further down the line, a bot is going to slap a tag on it and the article will remain looking like an unfinished piece. Yoninah (talk) 13:38, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Yoninah, thank you for your thoughtful comment. I do not use the current citation template, as it is too complicated and relies on my interest in coding WP, which is not why I am here. I volunteer to research, write, and edit. I believe the DYK process requires multiple editors, including folks who are willing to continuing growing and editing an article during and after the DYK process. This reflects the reality that an article is never "finished" as you said; rather, they're always underway by our community. While I appreciate your note as the concern of one editor, I trust the larger community more, which is what has led the articles I've created to receiving more than 100 DYKs. • Freechildtalk 17:01, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
  • I apologize for not knowing the reason why you were referencing that way. I also used to reference the old way, but I'm seeing more bots tag reference sections that don't have ISBN numbers, so I went ahead and memorized the template. Thank you for referencing more of the article. Would you mind looking at another hook suggestion on the DYK page? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 19:45, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Sorry if I caused you some grief by nominating the article you wrote. I saw an article that was well-written and about an interesting topic, so I nominated it. I didn't anticipate it turning out this way, so I just wanted to stop by and let you know that I think your work on Wikipedia has been excellent and is greatly appreciated. [edit]
We meet outside by the trees at 5:00 PM.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

Illinois Central Missouri River Bridge

[edit]

Hello, Freechild. Thank you for writing up the Illinois Central Missouri River Bridge article. I've nominated it for DYK. May I ask for more footnotes, please? There are none in the "features" section. Thanks in advance. --PFHLai (talk) 05:20, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Freechild. Per discussion at T:TDYK#Illinois Central Missouri River Bridge, the article needs more footnotes specifically in the second paragraph of the Features section. I've put in one. If you can stick in a few more, that would be good. Thank you. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 23:01, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
And now another reviewer wants a page number for your ref..... Oh, well.... If you still have the book, please put in the number. Thank you. --PFHLai (talk) 01:37, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
Honestly, I don't care about DYKs anymore PFHLai ([[User:Freechild/Awards|I used to), and your relating this reminds me why. While I appreciate quality WP content as much as anyone else, I do not feel bound to solely relying on reliable sources for minuscule information. In this case I culled a lot of information from online train aficionado forums- which I know not to be reliable, per se, but I also know to be the only source of information available to me beyond Google Books. DYK has become ridiculous, but thank you for trying. • Freechildtalk 23:18, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
Don't worry about it then, Freechild. It's alright. Happy editing (elsewhere in the wiki). Cheers! -PFHLai (talk) 23:31, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Omaha photos redux

[edit]

I've added a response to your query re. coordinates at the talk page for Illinois Central Missouri River Bridge.

I see that it's a fairly new article. Do you have an updated list of photos to take in the Omaha area? I don't expect to be there in the very near future, but if I do go it's likely to be on short notice, and I'd like to have a list of sites to photograph printed out and ready to go.

I've been working off of National Register of Historic Places listings in Nebraska, but that doesn't include the Ill. Central bridge, and probably a lot of other interesting article subjects as well. If you have the time and inclination, could you send me a list of things to shoot? You might indicate which are priority items, such as articles for which you've got GA ambitions, or for which an illustration would be particularly useful.

Hope article-writing is going well; let me know if there's something I can do for you on the ground in Nebraska—

Omaha template merge discussion

[edit]

I have started a discussion at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Omaha-related transportation templates about a few of the templates related to transportation in Omaha. I don't necessarily want to delete them all, but I think there is too much overlap for the templates to be useful. Feel free to join in. –Fredddie 22:07, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

They are better than they were before, so thanks for handling them all. –Fredddie 00:03, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Bredthauer Dam

[edit]

Wow, that was quick. I was trying to compose a message on your talk page bringing my merge proposal to your attention, and you went ahead and did it.

If you haven't noticed it yet, I'd already put the content of the dam article into the "History" sections for North Loup, Nebraska and Valley County, Nebraska. Given that, the new subsection is redundant; I'm going to delete it and redirect Bredthauer Dam to the "History" section.

Thanks! • Freechildtalk 16:10, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

List articles

[edit]

Please do not add red links to list articles. List articles are directories to other Wikipedia articles. They should contain neither redlinks or unlinked entries. If you wish to maintain a list of New Thought authors who do not yet have Wikipedia articles, please do so in your own user space. Yworo (talk) 23:15, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, but the list criteria were set by previous editors. It specifically states that notability of the entries is to be determined by the existence of a Wikipedia article. I removed "or being supported by reliable sources" because it was being ignored. A list of books by the subject do not qualify as reliable sources as sources must be third-party. You don't get to change the criteria specified by previous editors who created the article and determined the criteria for inclusion. Yworo (talk) 01:12, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
You also wrote in your edit comment "additionally, do not remove valid templates". I did not remove any template, but simply moved them to their correct location. For example, all maintenance template must go above all article content, including navigation templates. Yworo (talk) 01:14, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Please see the article talk page for the continuation of this conversation. • Freechildtalk 02:39, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Frederick Bailes

[edit]

Frederick Bailes article has been redirected I did not realize there was a discussion about removing. Can you help with this.66.108.86.141 (talk) 01:46, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

I see you reversed the edit but it has been tag again for deletion.66.108.86.141 (talk) 20:37, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
It's not tagged for deletion but rather for improvement. You need to understand Wikipedia maintenance templates better. Deletion templates include afd templates, prod templates, and speedy deletion templates. None of these have been added to the article. The article does not properly establish the subject's notability: the notability tag simply notes that if the individual is not notable that the article may be deleted. Just establish notability according to WP:BIO, okay? Yworo (talk) 20:48, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Ok trying to get the hang of this. Now did you bring back Frederick Bailes? Now it is about references and improving the article. I went to New Thought Music which has been redirected to New Age music this get a little confusing.66.108.86.141 (talk) 23:31, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

New Thought Christianity

[edit]

I thought you could add to this Christian New Thought in the US http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_in_the_United_States66.108.86.141 (talk) 23:36, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

I copyedited the section. It needs references, which can be taken from the History of New Thought article. • Freechildtalk 01:35, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

This was left after section was removed I'm confused to how this works I reading up to be clear but I believe some editors don't want the articles touched or if they have studied it or heard of something it is not included. Idid not have a chance to reference ; "To frank, we can only include the high-points of Christianity in the United States in this article. Even if we were to agree that the NTM is "Christian", has it has not had a large part in the history of Christianity in the United States-- or any place that I know of-- it is thus uncalled for and WP:POINTy to include it in the history section of this article-- or any other section.

Per Angr, maybe try Religion in the United States. Maybe not. şṗøʀĸşṗøʀĸ: τᴀʟĸ 19:05, 29 June 2011 (UTC)" 66.108.86.141 (talk) 22:33, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

I have no interest in engaging in argumentative or combative editing, which in my experience is what these types of edits always amount to. I won't be contributing to this particular article at this point. • Freechildtalk 00:15, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
I will take your cue I tried to reference to no avail. Thanks! 66.108.86.141 (talk) 04:51, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Wiki Suggestion

[edit]

I hope you don't mind me asking you this as I feel you have been very helpful. Do you think it would be a good idea to allow the posting of official Facebook and Twitter pages? Just thought since everyone turns to these sites for info on their fave celebrity or business. If so, how can I make the suggestion?

Facebook and Twitter are too subjective and provide no content of substance. I think they're just too... fluffy. With the legitimacy that wikipedia seeks and the culture among editors, I think any attempt to promote the usage of FB or Twitter pages will fall hard, and threaten your credibility as an editor. That's just my thinking. • Freechildtalk 15:54, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

The article Stuart Grayson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability not established due to lack of third-party sources; third-party sources used do not cover the subject in depth, rather are passing mentions

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Yworo (talk) 20:27, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Flag of Omaha

[edit]

Why there is no flag at Omaha article? Surely there are some cities in the US, which don't have a flag, but I think Omaha is not one of those. Is the only reason that nobody haven't had the time to draw it (to wikipedia)? 85.217.20.83 (talk) 11:58, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Now did some googling, and Omaha in fact has a flag. At least NAVA's American City Flags survey has "Flag of Omaha" at #26 on its list. 85.217.43.40 (talk) 21:39, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Omaha does have a flag, and it used to be on Wikipedia- however, it was taken down because of copyright violation, I believe. Let me see if I can find the old location and deletion reason. • Freechildtalk 00:53, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
How can that be possible? I mean how can one city flag have different copyright issues? Because most of them seem to have no problems. And it makes no sense one particular image file would have an issue about the copyright, because they should all be the same. 82.141.66.8 (talk) 00:18, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Nebraska

[edit]

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Nebraska, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semi-active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there haven't been much active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. I have begun a discussion on the projects talk page to see how the members of the project feel about this suggestion. Another user has added the project to the WPUS template and I added it to the list of supported projects in the WPUS main project page but before I take any further action I wanted to contact each of the active members for their input. --Kumioko (talk) 13:55, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Adultism

[edit]

I trying to save but I'm afraid I'm doing more hurt than help. I think the best thing we could do is try to focus on in from the levels of a) childhood and teenage abuse. b) The inability for one to divorce and choose their parents in cases of abuse. c) The inability to choose your own public school which btw would also help get rid of homophobia and cliche bullying d) anti-teenage (or ephebiphobic) stereotypes. e)comparing it to other systems of oppression does not seem to work so why not try comparing adultism, pedophobia, and ephebiphobia with gerontophobia? Or perhaps somethings that is more temporary or so-called escapable like religion, socioeconomic class or weight. Any just trying to help. -Rainbowofpeace (talk) 07:03, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for writing. I'm concerned that there is little or no receptivity to arguing the validity of the subject. Instead, I think we need to focus on finding high quality sources that focus on adultism, removing the argued citations in the AfD, and moving ahead in the conversation from focusing on the merits of the topic of adultism to focuing on the topic of adultism. This AfD should be argued on it's merit as a worthy topic to be included in WP, not whether it's a worthy topic - because that argument is proved through the literature. Does that make sense? I'm going to repost this in the AfD. • Freechildtalk 17:36, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Washington

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Washington might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. Please feel free to comment on your opinions about this suggestion. --Kumioko (talk) 01:33, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

re Personal Attack?

[edit]

OK, point taken. However, while you may be disappointed by my edits in internal discussion space, I'm disappointed by your edits in article space, which is a lot more important. It's a bad article, and I'm frustrated at its existence. If you're going to create bad articles and buttress them well enough that they can't be deleted, people are going to be mad at you. If you're going to be a radical and POV-pusher here you'd best have a thick skin.

I recognize that you've done lots of good work on obscure history subject and so forth, and that's great (and thank you!), but it doesn't give you a free pass to then create articles like this. Herostratus (talk) 15:41, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Oh, my skin is thick enough - I've quoted you on my user page because what you've written is kinda funny. However, your personal feelings about my editing should not factor in any AfD conversation. It's bad form. If you have something constructive to add, then please add it, and as always, bring your concerns about article value to the larger community for discussion. But don't say ugly things. • Freechildtalk 15:57, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Logan Fontenelle and Joseph La Flesche

[edit]

Hey, Freechild, good to see you! That was a great find, the 1889 sketch of LaFlesche from the Bancroft Journal in The Friend. It had lots of good details that I think might be useful, as it was relatively close to his lifetime. Have to take some of those 19thc. accounts with a grain of salt. Reading some of them, and comparing them to more recent histories, is like trying to look through wavy glass. Boughter includes several deprecatory remarks about Fontenelle from his time, and has extensively documented her work, so it's hard to figure out just who he was. Working with you early in my Wikipedia career got me quite hooked. I've weathered continuing controversy on the Thomas Jefferson article (some people still don't want to recognize the field has accepted his paternity of Hemings' children) and others, and keep learning and contributing. Hope you're well.Parkwells (talk) 18:17, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Parkwells, it's great to see you, too! I've enjoyed seeing your style deepen, and the way you've really added substance to a lot of my articles! I really, really appreciate your labors. It doesn't surprise me about TJ, as the majority of white America lives in constant denial of it's own multiracial history, let alone that of almost all Americans. Blech, to say the least, that folks use this project to write history to suit their bias, rather than towards an honest examination of what actually happened. All that said, I would love for you to look at any of the other articles I've created- you can find a list at User:Freechild#Articles. In turn, if there's ever anything I can do to be of assistance to you in your efforts please don't hesitate to let me know. I hope you're well, as well, and I look forward to continuing to appreciate your hard work! • Freechildtalk 18:26, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Parkwells, a quick note to let you know that your muse continues: I have developed a new template in response to your work on LF: Template:Fur Trade in Nebraska - let me know what you think! Lots of good redlinks in there waiting for work... • Freechildtalk 02:12, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments, Freechild; it's always fun and stimulating to work with you. Tantalizing red links, indeed. I came across one reference suggesting that Lucien Fontenelle came from a wealthy family; he was a French immigrant. The template seems like a fine idea; just need to think about it. One of the striking aspects of some recent research is seeing how much the Indian chiefs were thinking about strategic alliances as their daughters married wealthy fur traders; reminds me of European nobility. Two of Big Elk's daughters married American fur traders. Maybe we need to identify the fur traders' Indian wives and fathers-in-law, as most of them had them. The fur traders (as opposed to trappers) were usually men of capital - the marriages were joining the elite of both groups. First saw an article about that aspect in the Johnston family in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan/Canada, but it applies to many of these as well. Sarpy, Lucien Fontenelle, Logan Fontenelle, Joseph LaFlesche and his father - all were married to women who were daughters of chiefs, high ranking, or of partially European descent and high ranking (think so - would have to check them all again.) Sarpy became the stepfather of Mary Gale, the daughter of an Iowa woman and a US surgeon at Ft. Atkinson (he was reassigned when the fort was closed and left Mary and her mother behind.) Mary Gale married Joseph LaFlesche, Jr., who became chief of the Omaha. Many interlocking webs of influence. Just came across a Master's Thesis that addressed some of this before going on to cover more of Susette LaFlesche Tibbles' journalism career. Judith Boughter's 1998 book on "Betraying the Omaha" looks good; have not had a chance to study it yet.Parkwells (talk) 01:21, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Template: Native Americans in Nebraska

[edit]

Noted with interest your addition of Template:Native Americans in Nebraska to several articles I've worked on. It's a nice template, and I think it'll be useful for navigating among such sites.

A couple of suggestions, however; and I'll make them to you rather than changing the template, since it appears that you've done most of the work on it, and may very well have considered these already. First, should it include Kitzawitzuk, which is in Kansas and not in Nebraska? Second, would it be useful to add Pike-Pawnee Village Site, which is in Webster County (and was the site of an event whose location was the subject of some dispute between the historical societies of KS and NE in the 1920s)?

I'm not doing any research in that direction right now, but it's possible that in the future I'll be writing more articles on Native American archaeological sites in Nebraska. If so, should they be added to the template?

--Ammodramus (talk) 16:15, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing the value of this template. I agree with you about Kitzawitzuk. I also encourage you to add whatever you'd like to the template, because knowing that you're as good an editor as you are I trust your vision for the template is right on. We can discuss whatever you have questions about.
In the future I would like to create individual comprehensive templates for each tribe. I would encourage you to think about joining that effort, as well. • Freechildtalk 02:48, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

What about

[edit]

current dwellings at List of dwellings of Pueblo peoples? The pueblos around here have all sorts of dwellings and other buildings built in the last few decades. I am doing this here so that we can have a little privacy to discuss this. Should (shudder, shudder) casinos and their relatd hotels be included? Under the title of the article as it now stands those and a variety of HUD type housing would fit into the parameters of the list, but I would not be happy to see them added. Any thoughts? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 17:05, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

So I moved it to List of ancient dwellings of Pueblo peoples, which, while it connotes the age of the dwellings, makes no statement about the current usage of the dwellings. I don't think casinos and hotels counts as dwellings under anyone's measurement; however, they would fit into Category:Puebloan buildings and structures. Thoughts? • Freechildtalk 18:18, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

I have been thrilled to discover your work, so whatever you want to do is fine with me. I have 6 or 8 casinos between me and my dentist, but have never been in one. I dislike most of the architecture and its intent so am not likely to personally post any of that stuff. I just wanted to be clear on your intentions. And now that I think of it, there are a few nice modern pueblo structures that might work out. I like the "ancient" approach since a place such as Taos Pueblo still fits. Good work. Carptrash (talk) 23:58, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the appreciation Carptrash! The world of WP has been a little rough on me lately, and it's nice to have an "appreciator" out there! We'll keep at it, and in the meantime let me know if there's anything I can assist you with, too! • Freechildtalk 03:05, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

List of ancient pueblo dwellings

[edit]

Hi Freechild, Thanks for making the Colorado section a separate article! I was getting concerned that the section was getting quite long!

I have been going bold - any thoughts that you have about the content going into the Colorado section?

Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:34, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you! I LOVE everything you've added, and one of the reasons why I forked out the content was because of the details you're adding. I would love to add a column for the period of occupation, i.e. Pueblo I, II, and III. Would that be okay? • Freechildtalk 23:37, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Sure, that sounds great! And I have material to put in a section to describe each period (Pueblo I, etc.). How would that be?--CaroleHenson (talk) 00:24, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
That's great. Would that go best in Ancient dwellings of Pueblo peoples, or in each individual list? Maybe for now you could put it in both the Colorado article, and the main article? • Freechildtalk 00:28, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
Sure, I'll work on it tomorrow.--CaroleHenson (talk) 01:53, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Linoma Beach

[edit]

Pleased to report that I got to Linoma Lighthouse yesterday with my camera; with luck, will have photos uploaded in a day or two.

I'm thinking of doing an expansion of the article. The National Register nom form for Linoma Beach is now available online via the Nebraska State Historical Society, and it's got a lot of information that probably wasn't available when the article was originally written.

In the course of expanding the article, I'd like to move it from "Linoma Lighthouse" to "Linoma Beach", with a redirect from "Linoma Lighthouse". The NRHP lists the entire property, not just the lighthouse; and even the article as it now stands discusses the whole resort and not just the one structure. As the original author and the principal contributor to date, would you object to my doing that?

--Ammodramus (talk) 20:02, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for asking Ammodramus, I appreciate that. Please, have at it and let me know if I can be of use. I originally created the article because I wanted to learn about an artifact on the Platte I drove by all the time when I was in college. Sounds like it's better situated at Linoma Beach. Have fun! • Freechildtalk 21:39, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Mixed-race descendants among matrilineal American Indian nations

[edit]

Hi Freechild - Just came across a new source that addresses this more, specifically with the Choctaw. But I think the cases related to most of the matrilineal nations. Used this to deepen the article on Greenwood LeFlore, whose mother was a high-ranking Choctaw, so he gained her status.

"By the 1820s, as the historian Greg O'Brien notes, the Choctaw called such mixed-race children itibapishi toba (to become a brother or sister), which emphasized the connection to Choctaw, or issish iklanna (half-blood), which seemed to imitate Euro-American concepts. He notes the importance of their being first and foremost, part of the Choctaw elites. Choctaw chiefs recognized the advantage of using such mixed-race elite men as "trailblazers into an unprecedented universe of capitalist accumulation and renewable wealth." Interview with Wikimedia Foundation

[edit]

Hello Freechild, I hope you're well. My name is Aaron and I'm one of the Storytellers working on the 2011 fundraiser here at the Wikimedia Foundation. For this year's campaign we're seeking out and interviewing active Wikipedians like yourself, in order to produce a broader and more representative range of "personal appeals" to run come November. If you'd like to participate in this project, please email me at amuszalski@wikimedia.org. Interviews are typically conducted by phone or Skype and take between 30-90 minutes. (Note: This invitation is open to any interested Wikipedian — If you're reading this, and would like to be interviewed as well, please contact me.) Thanks! Omaha photographer!

[edit]

I've got to be in Omaha on Tuesday, and just sat down to start making up a list of sites that I needed to photograph. I was delighted to discover that User:PhotoMary's at work in Omaha. Though I doubt that I was half as delighted as you were—after I've been promising to illustrate some of your Omaha articles for so many months, you're probably very pleased to see someone actually doing it.

I've left her a lengthy but, I hope, not-too-intimidating note, and have gone through and followed up some of her edits (categorizing photos in Commons, removing reqphoto templates, and putting thumbnails of her pictures up at National Register of Historic Places listings in Douglas County, Nebraska). In the course of so doing, I've made edits to some of your articles; and I noticed that there're quite a few broken links in the citations. The problem, I think, is that the Omaha Landmark Heritage Commission tweaked their website, so the URL's are different. I've fixed a couple of them, but you might want to keep an eye out for that when you're vetting your articles. (We don't have to have current URL's, of course, but it's always nicer that way.)

Note also that the Nebraska State Historical Society's now got a lot of the NRHP nomination forms online, which means there's lots of great new information available. If you've been pondering an expansion of some of your Nebraska-historic-site articles, you might find it worth looking into.

Now, let's hope for clear skies on Tuesday--

--Ammodramus (talk) 20:10, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for your note Ammodramus - I appreciate it. I am extremely excited by PhotoMary's contributions, especially since she's just doing it rather than waiting for anything, you know!? I appreciate the dialogue we've had though, and I look forward to seeing what you bring to the table. These days I'm feeling increasing urgency about the historic sites throughout North Omaha, as more of them are getting zapped and changed than ever before. It's sad, and although I've taken a fair shake at capturing some of that history in writing, I know that there's more I'm missing by not being there. Hopefully those beautiful places will be snapped soon.
Thanks again for writing, and please keep in touch- it's good to have WikiFriends in and around Omaha! • Freechildtalk 00:30, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Removing Speedy at Everyone Deserves a Roof

[edit]

Hi Freechild, you recently removed a deletion tag from Everyone Deserves a Roof. Because Wikipedia policy does not allow the creator of the page to remove speedy deletion tags, an automated program has replaced the tag. Although the deletion proposal may be incorrect, removing the tag is not the correct way for you to contest the deletion, even if you are more experienced than the nominator. Instead, please use the talk page to explain why the page should not be deleted. Remember to be patient, there is no harm in waiting for another experienced user to review the deletion and judge what the right course of action is. As you are involved, and therefore potentially biased, you should refrain from doing this yourself. Thank you, - SDPatrolBot (talk) 21:33, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Please do not remove speedy deletion notices from pages you have created yourself, as you did with Everyone Deserves a Roof. If you believe the page should not be deleted, you may contest the deletion by clicking on the button that says: Click here to contest this speedy deletion, which appears inside the speedy deletion notice. This will allow you to make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you. - SDPatrolBot (talk) 21:36, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Can you help me add a photo to the text about me on this page? What is your email address?

Removal of picture

[edit]

Hello, I'm sure you have a good reason for removing the logo image from the Religious Science article (no sarcasm), but your edit summary leaves me underinformed. Could you briefly explain, for my peace of mind? Thanks. GirlGuider1910 (talk) 16:15, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for asking, GirlGuider1910- I didn't know anyone else was watching. The logo was for the old United Centers for Spiritual Living, and not for Religious Science, per se. It is used on the Centers for Spiritual Living article. If anything is used on the Religious Science page, it would be the old Religious Science emblem. Does all that make sense? • Freechildtalk 16:25, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks :-) GirlGuider1910 (talk) 16:52, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Good to hear from you - I spent time on St. Deroin and associated articles - added the name of all the Fontenelle children because the names continue to turn up in histories (Henry Fontenelle was incorrectly called the descendant of a French-Canadian trapper/trader in the New Advent Enc.) Didn't look at the article with pic of JDeRoin right away, but at the other reference (or the same, without the photo). Still trying to get my mind around what/how this Scribbd.com material is/works - looks as if it was scanned in from a book, at least for these two articles. "Float" indeed. [edit]

Just reverted your addition of Nebraska State Historical Society as a see-also at A. T. Hill. The NSHS article is a fairly minimal stub, with almost nothing about the history of the organization. I don't think, myself, that we should have a see-also link unless the NSHS article tells a bigger story in which Hill plays a part. If you disagree with this, or (better yet), if you're planning to expand the NSHS article with a "History" section, then by all means undo my reversion; I promise not to make it the first shot of an edit war. Template and categories...

[edit]

Hi Freechild, Thanks for your input for the template, I made some additions to Template:Indigenous People of CO after looking over your template for Nebraska.

I've been noticing as I've been working on the prehistoric CO articles that there's a great disparity in the use of categories. I've seen that you corrected a category recently and I was wondering if you could review this list. Im going to work on updating the categories, depending upon the scenario and wondered if you had any thoughts about whether any of these are not good to use. Would there be a problem using any of these (again based upon the circumstance)? Thanks, your help would be greatly appreciated!--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:48, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit]

Using categories inside of categories and so forth is called "nesting" categories. I don't really have time to look at how these are nested right now, but I will sort what you have here and you can compare them to how they are currently. Also, to get a category to show up on a page without categorizing that page, which you've partially accomplished here by not using a bracket, use your regular left brackets with a colon after them, then the word Category and so forth. Look at the way I've done this page for more on that. • Freechildtalk 21:21, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't understand what is wrong this this first list? I'll describe each cat here:

CH Reply: Cool trick with the colon, thanks! I did a strike out of the first one, since it's an overarching category.

Hunter-gatherers

Periods:

The meta-category for these periods should be something approximately like Category:Archaeological periods of North America, with different periods sub-categorized and sub-sub-categorized accordingly within.
CH Reply: Yes, the periods are not categorized correctly. I would think it would be good to categorize them nested like List of archaeological periods (North America). I'm happy to do that.--CaroleHenson (talk) 21:41, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Puebloans:

I would only think it necessary to make sure you're distinguishing peoples and cultures when appropriate.
CH Reply: Agreed.

Cultures:

Good to go here.

Rock art, solar calendars:

I would like to see a new category called Category:Ancient Pueblo peoples art and/or Category:Ancient Pueblo peoples rock art. There has historically been a lumping together of all things Native American on WP, and I want to see distinctions made as appropriate.
CH Reply: Make sense to me. There was prehistoric art in several periods.

Museums:

What's interesting to me is that all three of these (types) of categories can be distinct from each other, and can be used concurrently, too.

Re

[edit]

Is that useful? Let me know if you have any other questions? • Freechildtalk 21:21, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes, that is helpful! It sounds like the first category should not be used directly, which must be the place I've been hung up before. I whole-heartedly agree with your comments regarding nesting the archaeological periods. I have some imbedded replies above, starting "CH Reply:" Thanks so much!--CaroleHenson (talk) 21:41, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
I created the suggested name Category:Archaeological periods of North America and put it under Category:Periods and stages in archaeology.
At Category:Late Prehistoric period of North America I saw one if it's categories as North America. Sorry to bug you again, but what does the "|North America" do to the category. Does it make it like the newly created category somehow? Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 22:21, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
The "|North America" sorts it in the other categories, so that instead of it appearing alphabetically under "P" for "Periods..." it will appear alphabetically under "N" for "North...". Make sense?
Also, I just discovered Category:Pre-Columbian era, which is similar to what you've created at Category:Archaeological periods of North America. Part of the challenge of categorization is ensuring that the category you're creating doesn't already exist. I'd suggest you check and see if they're doing the same thing, and make according adjustments. • Freechildtalk 23:13, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
There's definitely overlap with other categories - like that category that also includes South America, and Archaic period of the Americas, which also includes South America. I added the North American categories there, too, so they'd show up in the list. The only thing that I saw that seemed the same was the item that I mentioned to you, which you told me didn't make a sub-group for North America, but set the sort order, so I think we're good.--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:25, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm a dangerous person to make a suggestion to : ) - if it makes things more organized (and hits at something that's been bothering me), I'm game to do it. I've finished Paleo-Indian and Archaic and am about 1/2 way through the Post-Archaic.--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:29, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
Categorization is a major endeavor here, for sure. I have been caught up in such a category-making melee for hours before. Have fun! • Freechildtalk 23:30, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
Done with the Category:Archaeological periods of North America, with nesting of Paleo-Indian, Archaic and Post-Archaic periods. And, cleaned up items that were at the higher Category:History of indigenous peoples of North America. It seems like that's in synch with your comments.
I came up with an interesting twist I wasn't aware of: there seem to be three Post-Archaic periods:
  • Formative period in the Americas‎ (10 C, 35 P)
  • Classic period in the Americas‎ (6 C, 17 P)
  • Post-Classic period in the Americas‎ (4 C, 8 P)
What you say about the rock art makes sense, too, but maybe we can touch base later once I do the categorization of the CO prehistoric sites, such as what might be the right subheadings besides Puebloan people.--CaroleHenson (talk) 00:40, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Oh, yes, I guess you're absolutely right- we'd have Period I, II, and III rock art, yes? Huh. Each of those would then be nested in the relevant period, in addition to Category:Native American art and Category:Art in Colorado. Phew! • Freechildtalk 01:37, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

New categories for you

[edit]

Alright CaroleHenson, I went down the rabbit hole. Category:Pueblo art, Category:Pueblo artists, Category:Ancient Pueblo peoples rock art, and Category:Pueblo ceramics have all been started now. Category:Petroglyphs in the United States can be sorted accordingly; should a category be created called Category:Pueblo petroglyphs? • Freechildtalk 02:07, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Great job! Interesting question, I've not seen a lot of pueblo petroglyphs or pictographs to make it a distinctive category, but you may have more insight of states other than Colorado.--CaroleHenson (talk) 10:07, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

French people in Nebraska

[edit]

Hey Freechild, I just wanted to let you know that I took a look at your recently created article French people in Nebraska-- However, I noticed there are some holes that may need filling: the references in the article do not follow Wikipedia guidelines. There is a tutorial on formatting citations at Wikipedia:Referencing. It would be great if you could also add references to the related article Seal of Nebraska. Monmouth Park School

[edit]

I see that you've added the year of removal from the Nat'l Register of Historic Places for Monmouth Park School at National Register of Historic Places listings in Douglas County, Nebraska. Do you have a source for that? I was able to find and add citations for the removal dates for South Omaha Bridge and Jobbers' Canyon Historic District, but was unsuccessful with the school. Ammodramus (talk) 15:50, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Although Monmouth Park School was demolished, it is apparently still listed on the National Register. So I'm going to put it back in the "Current listings" section of the Douglas County list. If you have a source for it being removed from the NRHP, feel free to revert my edit. --sanfranman59 (talk) 20:33, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
