History

[edit]

75 years ago, the first victory day was officially celebrated in the USSR. The Soviet government declared victory early on the morning of may 9 after signing the German Act of Surrender (the signing ceremony took place in Berlin). Victory day celebrations were introduced by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on may 8, 1945. In 1945, there was a salute on may 9, and a Victory Parade on June 24. May 9 remained a non-working day until 1947. After 1947 Victory Day was not celebrated for many years while Stalin was in power. That all changed when Leonid Brezhnev, a solider in the Great Patriotic War, became the secretary of the party in 1964. Victory day was made a public holiday. The anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany is widely celebrated holiday in the contemporary Russia. It is the highlight of the Russian calendar and an integral part of Russian culture[3].
