Julien Lopes, known professionally as Ramzoid, is a Canadian music producer, video producer, and online personality born in Prince Edward Island.[1] In addition to producing electronic music for his YouTube channel, Lopes has released more than 20 singles and 3 EPs, including his most popular single, “Ball & Chain”,[2] which has been streamed more than 1 million times on Spotify.[3]

Early life

[edit]

Lopes was born and raised in Prince Edward Island, a province in eastern Canada. In an interview for Sidewalk Talk, Lopes remarked that his childhood “was great. Prince Edward Island is super chill, so I feel like it was a nice place to grow up, versus a big city.”[4] Lopes’ early musical influences came from the punk rock and emo music he heard in video games he played as a child, such as Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero, as well as original soundtracks from games such as RuneScape and MapleStory. Later influences such as Skrillex and Deadmau5 are reflected in his more recent work.[1]

Career

[edit]

Lopes started producing music when he was 12 years old, after downloading the Reason music software. He gave up for a few months after being frustrated with the software, but began making music again when his uncle introduced him to Ableton Live, which he has been using since.[1] In 2012, Lopes began posting his music and other content to his YouTube channel, with his earliest public video being “How to Clean Your Speakers”.[5]

Eventually, Lopes started making videos teaching basic recording techniques, as well as how to replicate specific artists’ sounds, such as Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, and Post Malone. These videos received mild to moderate success, with views ranging from 20,000 to more than 100,000. Lopes then began producing videos where he would challenge himself with unconventional parameters such as making music without being able to hear it while creating it,[6] only using sounds from a PS5,[7] using software he was unfamiliar with,[8] sampling every Billie Eilish song into one beat,[9] as well putting twists on songs by specific artists, such as "If Billie Eilish made *extremely* HAPPY MUSIC".[10] These types of videos helped Lopes' gain even more popularity, receiving 100,000 to 1-2 million views, with his most popular video, "If the Walmart Yodeling Kid started RAPPING", getting almost 10 million views.[11]

As of November 2020, Lopes' YouTube channel has grown to more than 390,000 subscribers and amassed over 44,000,000 views.[12] He has 42,000 followers on Instagram.[13]

Collaborations

[edit]

Lopes has made several videos with popular YouTube personality Cody Ko, such as "making the next viral TIKTOK SONG ft. CODY KO"[14] and "Making The Next Viral Tik Tok Sound".[15]

Lopes has collaborated with YouTuber Kyle Beats,[16] creating the video "MAKING A BEAT WITH RAMZOID AND MAI *its a banger*".[17]

Lopes is part of a musical project named Soda Island, which includes German duo Avionics, Australians Spire and Arian Cook, England native Refraq, and Izzard from the United States.[18]
