Norman Reeves was born 8th July 1954 in the Limes Maternity Unit at Hartshill, Stoke on Trent. He was educated at Oakhill primary, secondary and latterly Oakhill Junior High School. His first job was as an apprentice electrician with the Stoke on Trent City Council. After qualifying as an electrician he stayed there for a further two years from where he then took a job with the National Health service in 1978 as a maintenance Electrician .This was situated at Bucknall Hospital with responsibility for all the community properties. This was now when his career changed with an opening occurring at the main hospital i.e. the North Staffs City General Hospital, the opening was as a for a Planner Estimator. These jobs were for a newly emerging Bonus scheme and involving job evaluation and latterly computer analysis. The estimated length of these jobs was 5 years however they were to last for over fifteen years. The group of men assembled for these jobs were from all trades and all areas of expertise they were as follows Planner Manager Mr Bernard Wheatley, formerly Senior Engineer Mr Peter Bridgett, Fitter COPD Mr Dave Lawton, Fitter Westcliff Hospital Mr Austin Cartlidge Fitter NSRI Mr Mick Byrne, Plumber NSRI Mr Cliff Cartlidge, Electrician, NSRI Mr Eric Taylor, Joiner CGH Mr Alan Tunnicliff, Painter CGH Mr Keith Watkiss Painter CGH Mr Ian Finney, Joiner Stallington Hospital Mr Roy Barlow, Electrical Lift Maintenance Mr Reg Harrison, Electrician, Bucknall Hospital This post brought out Normans interest in computing and then a new vacancy as a Building Energy Management Technician was announced. This new job was then obtained after stiff interviews and Norman’s new boss was Mr Kevin Millington. Almost a legendary figure with the North Staffordshire group of engineers, a fine engineer, a true workaholic yet an incredibly strange man to work for. With Kevin the job was first second and third on the agenda. With this job Norman learnt to write software and understand the BEMS languages of Trend, Jel Telemecanique and other minor languages. After working here for five years he then took a job with Staffs County Council as Energy Engineer with the Energy Management Department. Here he was able to learn Andover Plain English languages and Transmitton software. He also brought into use Smart Control heating controls at many of the County Council properties saving money and energy in the process. The peak of his career now was beckoning with the Energy Managers job with University of North Staffordshire. This was controlling a general energy budget of over £4,000,000 and a local staff of two and an indirect workforce of over 100 men. He had this job till 2005 when at the age of 51 he retired on ill health grounds. He now lives at home in Stoke with his wife of 29 years Carole.
