Record of a Spaceborn Few is a 2018 science fiction novel by Becky Chambers, published by Hodder and Stoughton. It is a sequel to The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and A Closed and Common Orbit.

Plot Synopsis

The novel begins with a short prologue centered around an accident involving the Oxomoco, a ship in the Exodan fleet, during which the main characters of the book are introduced.

The narrative then flashes forward four years, to the end of the events from The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.

  • Kip — A restless teenager who dreams of leaving the fleet.
  • Isabel — An elderly archivist
  • Sawyer — A recent immigrant who left the Exodan Fleet
  • Eyas — A caretaker who performs Exodan funerary practices

Reception

Record of a Spaceborn Few was a finalist for the 2018 Kitschies[1] and the 2019 Hugo Award for Best Novel.[2]

Tor.com described the book as "remarkable" while that also acknowledging that it wasn't "going to win over anyone who’s been underwhelmed by these books before"[3]. Maggie Clark of Strange Horizons described the book as "dynamic" while arguing that Chambers has "plainly solidified herself as a speculative philosopher"[4]
