This is the structure of the New Zealand Land Forces in 1942.
In New Zealand 1942 saw the peak of mobilised land forces. The preceding years since the outbreak of war in 1939 had seen an increase in uniformed personnel within the New Zealand armed forces, both regular forces and territorial forces.[1] With the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan in December 1941 the Territorial Forces were rapidly mobilised and expanded. In addition to the 2nd New Zealand Division fighting as part of Eighth Army in North Africa and elements of what would come to constitute 3rd Division defending Fiji, three new Territorial Army divisions would be formed in New Zealand. One for each of the three military districts. Further, 1942 also found two divisions from the United States in New Zealand: the 1st Marine Division and the 37th Division. Along with the 1st Army Tank Brigade, these two divisions would form the Army Reserve. The Territorial Army was also manning the static coastal and anti-aircraft defences within the fortress areas as well as providing personnel for the area defence troops within the military districts.

By the beginning of 1943 the risk of invasion had receded and much of the force here listed had begun to be demobilised, amalgamated or had never come to be realised. As the territorial units were demobilised, released personnel returned to their civilian occupations or were transferred to units overseas. In some cases, particularly with coastal and AA defences, Home Guard personnel took over responsibilities for manning equipment.
