J.A. Sharpe (see our syllabus) has a chapter on statistic for crime and for punishment which would be of help. See also Shoemaker Prosecution and punishment.. (of which I have copy) --Jfclegg (talk) 07:14, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I certainly will! I was thinking that a list (with explanations, of course) would be useful for those researching the judicial system of that time period, though I do take your point on it not being the best addition to the wiki. Perhaps it could be added on the page of the Old Bailey? 858rine (talk) 18:44, 11 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Punishments or Bow Street runners?

[edit]

Having re-read Hitchcock's & Shoemaker's "Retribution" chapter I actually think that a historical discussion of punishments would be useful. But Im not sure where it would go in the Wikipedia architecture. Its really a broader matter, to do with crime & punishment in general, not just the Old Bailey. If you decide to go for Bow Street, a good source is J.M. Beattie's book on the First English Detectives - its in the library (BALI) --Jfclegg (talk) 18:51, 18 October 2015 (UTC). Collaboorate with Elisa.danesin (she hasnt left her wiki name...) who chas chose the Biw St runners--Jfclegg (talk) 18:54, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm sorry to have taken so long to answer, but I swear I was working hard on the project! I'd be glad to collaborate with her, though I do have a question: should this project be a side note, or should I make that my main objective? Because, having assumed that I would have to work with her on the side, I had chosen Thomas de Veil as my main topic (who I haven't written anything about yet because I'm still reading the sources- I do apologize, I swear I'll keep up with the timeline from now on) but I am now starting to doubt myself. Sorry for raising this question so late!

De Veil

[edit]

Are you sticking with De Veil? You need to put up (immediately!) a few lines and bibliography as navarco indicated. For a start there is an entry on him in the Dictionary of National Biography. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/38735 --Jfclegg (talk) 17:44, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Im sorry - seeing that "De Veil" was a red link I thought you were creating a new article - in fact there is a "de Veil" article as you had realised. --Jfclegg (talk) 18:56, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear I think that you (and many others!) are not looking in the library catalogue! You can access it on line for any Ca' Foscari computer and from home via proxy or (better) VPN. It's also in paper form in: Ca' Foscari-Biblioteca CFZ  : REF (REF 920.041 DIZNB SU P5)--Jfclegg (talk) 12:19, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Whitehall

[edit]

AS the Whitehall article in in wikipedia says: the name "Whitehall" is thus also frequently used as a metonym for British central governmental administration, as well as being a geographic name for the surrounding area.--Jfclegg (talk) 12:47, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Esquire"

[edit]

Sorry I don't know; look it up - eg in OED, Wikipedia...--Jfclegg (talk) 21:38, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cases

[edit]
Examples are a form of proof. They help to bring an idea alive, and so are functional to an argument. But don't over load the reader. --Jfclegg (talk) 21:44, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

William Wreathock and De Veil

[edit]

Dear 858rine I like your De Veil page very much - congratulations. Wreathlock looks interesting too, and if you did it within a week could be eligible for "Did you know"status! Navarco can tell you about this.

You could also ask him if it wouldnt be better to first try to get the De Veil article up into a higher class. As Irene mentioned, there quite a lot about him in various sections of Tales from the Hanging Court, and perhaps you look at Beattie's book on The first English detectives, which is in the library, and must have bibliographical info. best wihses and congratulations! --Jfclegg (talk) 09:49, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Internet problems are no excuse - you can use Ca' Foscari computers! But do look (as invited ) at the grading system and try to get inot higher class. You also need to be working on yours essay by now --Jfclegg (talk) 08:37, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions and questions

[edit]

Has any one from the group offered suggestions? I see that people have intervened , but not on the conent and t its not clear to me what is going on... ? As for content, I wonder about the anonymous 1743 Its very interesting as a tex,t but did De Veil really write a pamphlet with Swift? Cross check in a life of Swift? On Justices, trading and otherwise the authority is Norma Landau. We don't have her books but hunt on the net - and look for articles in J Stor? I should add that i like your article v much!--Jfclegg (talk) 21:20, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hans De Veil and Swift

[edit]

Try looking the essay up in the English Short Title Catalogue (British Library. Its on-line). Did you look in the standard (though rather old) biography of Swift? Irvin Ehrenpreis, Swift: The Man, His Works, and the Age (London: Methuen, 1962-83). As for particular cases, I think 2/3 examples could be interesting. Best wishes --Jfclegg (talk) 16:33, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
