You asked, "If I wrote the article and we use it on our web page why is it a copyright violation to use it here?" Because information on a website becomes the copyright of that website, regardless of who wrote it. You need to have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GFDL, in order to post it to Wikipedia.
