Reports at AIV

Hello, I have removed your report at AIV here because it is not formatted correctly. Please follow the format on the page (as described there) and do not add new sub-headings. Inaccurate reports cause the bot on that page to malfunction. Thank you.--VirtualSteve need admin support? 22:38, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Kettering

I noticed your reversion of the last 6 edits which you describe as vandalism? They appear to me to be fairly constructive and at the very worst... over linking? Cheers TeapotgeorgeTalk 15:57, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

(Copied from TeapotGeorge's userpage for completeness)

Hi, I have identified them as vandalism on precisely that premise: over-linking. The user has a history of over-linking (and subsequent warnings). Despite some of the links possibly being useful, there have been links included to 'woolen': I don't think that sort of thing exactly enhances the article. Given that some of the links are entirely redundant, and others questionable at the least, I have reverted the entire thing.

Cheers, Fortnum (talk) 16:01, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Understood...TeapotgeorgeTalk 16:04, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Re: User_talk:Jeremy_Bolwell, I also agree with you Fortnum, as the excessive linking concerns articles I have contributed to. An ANI may not be required as the parent project has members who are admins with blocking powers.--Kudpung (talk) 08:03, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Dad's Army

Hi Fortnum, back in September you removed Dad's Army from the List of BBC Radio 4 programmes and this is incorrect - as you will see from the relevant section in Dad's Army there was indeed a Radio 4 Dad's Army. It can easily be referenced but as this is just a list page, hopefully we won't have to - can you please stop removing it? Thanks. Jamesinderbyshire (talk) 17:41, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi, re: your deletion of Dad's army from the List and my suggestion you "stop removing it" - I was just reaction to you saying "Again, Dad's Army is a television programme never broadcast on Radio 4" in your edit comment - sorry if this didn't mean you deleted it more than once, I didn't actually check back to see if you meant that. Jamesinderbyshire (talk) 19:57, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Worcestershierre, Warwickshierre, and Everyshierre

Hello Fortnum/Archive 1! A non-British user seems to be attempting to suggest that the Brits are not pronouncing their own British place names correctly, and appears to believe that it is a policy of Wikipedia to instruct the Brits, through the use of the IPA, how British English should be pronounced. He/she also seems to be of the opinion that it is Wikipedia policy to regard British English by default as a rhotic language, which it is not. Some British Wikipedians are trying to avoid an edit conflict and have requested my support. I have added my comments to the debate the non-British user has has started in defence of his/her multiple, WP:BOLD? changes to IPA pronunciations of British place names. As a professional linguist I accord every version of English its own particular merits and my position here strictly concerns the way in which the IPA is interpreted and applied in the Wikipedia, and how the current policy may need to be changed through a truly representative consensus. If you would like to help resolve this issue, please see User talk:Kudpung#IPA, RP, etc. and User talk:Lfh#Warwickshire to get the background. Maybe you could then chime in with your views on the subject at Wikipedia talk:IPA for English#Rhoticity in place names. Thanks. --Kudpung (talk) 18:58, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Indeed: it would appear this is a classic case of 'Wikipedia guidelines say this is what's right, so it must be right'. I also wasn't aware that the conventions of the IPA can be modified on wikipedia as and when required. I have, thus, chimed in. Your work is scholarly and accurate, and I have thus decided not to add more detail, but I believe your stance is correct and have supported it accordingly. I shall keep an eye on the discussion (I imagine it won't end just yet...).Fortnum (talk) 17:44, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for joining in. I got drawn into this at the request of someone who happens to know about my work, but I really prefer to regard Wiki as my hobby, and thus a different world than the realm of linguistics, and that's why I called for participation all round. Neverthelss, I'll continue to do what i can before I get completely exasperated!--Kudpung (talk) 21:40, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Trolling

I have removed this talk page section that you have started. While you may be frustrated with other editors' level expertise, starting a discussion just to say that others don't know what they're talking about and should STFU is not a valuable contribution to the project and is instead unproductive rudeness wrapped in the guise of flowery language. Please do not readd it or I will be compelled to take action. — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɹ̠ˤʷɛ̃ɾ̃ˡi] 17:59, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

I am not alone in my sentiment, the other editor even asked you what exactly you're contributing and you admitted it was nothing. This is not a matter of agreeing with your sentiment (that is irrelevant), it is of making nasty comments that do nothing but anger other editors. If you don't see your contribution as unnecessary flamewar baiting, then that's unfortunate. I happen to believe that trolling can be unintentional, so perhaps you can take some consolation that I am not saying that you're necessarily deliberately trolling, but you ought to know better. — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɹ̠ˤʷɛ̃ɾ̃ˡi] 19:34, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
That an editor has decided to turn the topic into something more constructive doesn't mean that you did not insult other editors. AGF compells me to offer a more detailed account of how I interpreted your post. Would that be all right with you? — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɹ̠ˤʷɛ̃ɾ̃ˡi] 22:07, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, if you really feel the need to, then help yourself, but it is rather making a fuss about nothing, don't you think? I could quite happily point the finger and make a fuss about your calling me a 'troll', but I wouldn't dream of it: I have better things to do with my time. I should have thought you would as well.Fortnum (talk) 22:41, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
But you did point the finger and make a fuss abut me calling you a troll. If you don't care, I won't bother. — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɹ̠ˤʷɛ̃ɾ̃ˡi] 23:09, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, I think we're both getting the wrong end of the stick: I misinterpreted what you were saying. I'm not bothered what you call me: after all, I don't know you and will never meet you. So no, don't bother with it. The comment I made on the IPA talk page has, hopefully, engendered some fruitful debate and, hopefully, a conclusion of some sort to the issue and, so long as you don't feel you need to delete it again, I"m happy with the outcome. I would counsel you to be more circumspect with words such as 'troll' as they are, as I'm sure you're aware, inflammatory and often counterproductive. But other than that, I feel no need to make a further fuss about anything you've said. Let's leave it at that and concentrate on working towards resolving this IPA issue. I understand that you might have felt my original comment on the talk page was unhelpful, but I do feel that the issue has rattled around far too long with no direction, and something needed 'shaking up', so to speak. It is, I feel, unfortunate that a lot of knowledgeable editors of academic distinction have been driven away from a discussion due to its veering wildly off course: the issue of WP:NOT is also of concern to me, and a central issue. But as I suggest, discussions like this are best left to the IPA talk page. Cheers, Fortnum (talk) 23:49, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
I think part of what engendered such a strong response is that it seemed to be in the context of the discussion immediately above it, one that included a new user struggling to understand the IPA. Kudpung's post changes the context and it seems now that that's what you intended (though I don't understand why you would say, "Maybe it's time to wrap this one up" to a discussion that ended a month ago). Although the slights at the other editors' "academic distinction" and use of scary quotes around "editors" are in poor form (IMHO), it's not enough to make any more fuss over. Regards. — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɹ̠ˤʷɛ̃ɾ̃ˡi] 01:18, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
I don't consider the discussion ever to have really ended a month ago. It lay dormant because all those who had something interesting to point out on the weaknesses of the use of the IPA in the encyclopedia, had been ekeled out, or more aptly, not allowed in to the secret garden of the IPAists. My AGF has been used up because Kwami runs away with the opinion (that he uses in his personal attacks) that I am an incompetent linguist (contract lexicographer to one of the world's leading series of bilingual dictionaries, and author of a series of TESOL text books), while nobody knows on what experience Kwami from the US assumes to be an expert on British RP. The focus of my valedictory is that: I have pointed out once more (exactly as previously) some areas that several editors would like to see being given some considerable structured debate; I wish to be left out of the debate(s); and that Kwami's disruptive editing and tacit acceptance (and occasional use) of WP:CIVIL are probably in contravention of the trust vested in him as a sysop. On this latter, I'm quite prepared to do nothing about it, and I hope nobody else takes it too seriously either - his knowledge of the IPA is impeccable, I don't really want to talk about him behind his back, and it would be a shame to see him on WQA, ANI, ARBCOM, blocked, or in the worst case scenario, losing his tools.--Kudpung (talk) 07:48, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
If I called you incompetent, my apologies, though I don't recall doing so. But it's frustrating to try to work out where the misunderstanding lies when you repeatedly refuse to cooperate. I don't claim to be an expert in BE, but I can read, and everything I've read says that linking ar is found in conservative RP. This is s.t. you yourself have admitted. If you claim that a name, which you now admit has an /r/ in it, doesn't have an /r/ in it, and you refuse to explain yourself, how are we supposed to discuss you points intelligently? If you contradict yourself and then refuse to clarify, how are we to know that you are competent?
I think I understand you now. Your POV is that British, or perhaps just English, place names should be transcribed in contemporary RP for the benefit of ESL students, without details such as linking ar. That has not been at all clear to me until now. And your further POV is that those names should not be transcribed in a way that would be accessible to non-RP speakers or students. IMO that is not acceptable for us, though I accept it as a legitimate POV. kwami (talk) 22:55, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

WP Northamptonshire

Hi Fortnum just to let you know some Northamptonshire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release (which I never herd of until today). It can be seen here. It just advises to make some Northants articles better and I'm currently working on Northamptonshire/Kettering which is coming along nicely, but help would be appreciated, best Likelife (talk) 16:10, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the information: I'll try to dedicate some time to this, particularly as I'd lived in Kettering for over 20 years!

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:18, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

You are not alone...

Reading your recent exchange with a couple of other WP editors and wanted to let you know that you are not alone in your frustration. I've pretty much left editing medical articles rather than put up with that sort of crap - power struggle/games are not a way to enjoy the time we devote to our volunteer work here. As for one of them, IMO he is just totally unaware of his god complex and I bear no ill will towards him. I spent my entire life dealing with that sort and have come to just accept it as fact. The other one is quite a different story, and I find very irritating, to say the least. Gandydancer (talk) 03:08, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

@Gandydancer: Thank you for that. I find the pair of them puffed up, self-important windbags frankly. I linked the OWNERSHIP page for one of them, because he was in dire need of revisiting that policy. I'm sure they think this is a ludicrous idea... And exactly as you say - it's the hubristic overbearing manner which they display in spades which dissuades any other potential new or new-ish editors from contributing. They probably can't even see that - or worse, can see it but put maintaining their own self-important 'reputation' ahead of actually improving this encyclopædia. Rant over (for now). Thanks again Fortnum (talk) 06:59, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia

Dear fellow editor,

I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.

All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.

Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.

I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).

The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:41, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
