Kujang

[edit]

Hey, you just moved Kujang (Indian town) to Kujang (Odisha). But, ain`t there two entities Kujang in India, one TOWN, and one TEHSIL (sort of a sub district)? Regards, Gott 02:35, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for visiting. I saw [1]. I think it will be fine without such two thing. If you want, do divide two entities. Sawol (talk) 02:48, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you changed former Miss Korea winner's name?

[edit]

You changed Miss Korea 2008 Na Ri and 2009 Kim Joo-ri's name. Na Ri did not compete as Na Ree in Miss Universe 2009. And Kim Joo-ri is not Kim Joo-Ri.

I will change again soon. Because my version is right. --Spatronic (talk) 16:13, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't change Kim Joo-ri. I changed Na Ree. I found youtube's material. Show me that Na Ri is correct. Sawol (talk) 08:36, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proper Romanization

[edit]

Hi, Sawol. I see your changes on some author pages I've been putting up... though those author names are NOT "proper" Romanization, as you clearly saw, they are the Romanizations that the authors have chosen and requested at the Korean Literature Translation Institute. You can see those Romanizations (some of which are quite weird) here: http://klti.libguides.com/author_name Ccmontgom (talk) 11:03, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:Ccmontgom. Thank you for visiting. Refer to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean). What is the proper Romanization? If you have another opinion, achieve consensus on that through Wikipedia:Requested moves. Sawol (talk) 12:19, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sawol.. Thanks for that link. l . I did look at the naming conventions and the first thing they say is:

1) Common usage in English. LTI Korea which is the government agency responsible for Korean author names, working with the authors when they can, is creating the common usages that the authors request - This database is giving Korea the preferred common uses because, if you look at many of the names, the common uses are multiple and have been made up randomly by foreign publishers (thank God the Wikipedia allows alternate names to be listed, that helps a great deal). These lbiguide "common usages" by the way, also reflect the Romanizations the author's want (in the cases that authors are still around to say). To not use this resource which is precisely in place to bolster common usages seems odd. What Wikipedia seems to be doing here, and with Korean government backed evidence that the authors don't want it, is automatically assigning rote Romanizations even when they sound infelicitous, or are actively opposed by the authors as demonstrated by their personal Romanizations on the Korean libguide. It confuses me that this seems even questionable. There are people who want their names spelled they way they want them, they have indicated this through the Korean government in a document that is instantly accessible and linkable. Why wouldn't we here at Wikipedia honor their preferences? Preferences, for that matter, communicated by the same government in charge of all Romanization?

Thanks for, I hope, working through that nearly tl/dr

I'll also, I think, have another question for you as you seem to have accurately tagged Seo-jong-ju for a copy and paste. But it's a copy and paste from an LTI Korea Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported page which should allow complete copy and pasting if we wanted to. And we very much do want to.^^ So I'm guessing I'm unaware of how I should indicate that largely unchanged text is being used with copyright permission? Is it use of attribution? I've looked at a couple dozen attribution templates, but none seems appropriate. Oh well, if you don't have the answer I can dig more..

Changes to Korean Author Names?

[edit]

Sawol - I notice that you are changing Korean author names to "standard" Romanization. In this case, however, the changes should not be made as the author names on the pages reflect how the authors spell their names in English. This is reflected on the Korean Literature Authors Name Authority Database (created by the Korean government), which you can see here: http://klti.libguides.com/author_name

Changing the Romanization in these cases makes the Wikipedia pages inaccurate as it incorrectly represents the author names. In this case, shouldn't the Wikipedia respect the names of the authors?

Ccmontgom (talk) 21:36, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My moves is not the standard Romanization. I followed the Wikipedia polices and guidelines. I know that the Wikipedia pages should reflect naming conventions (Wikipedia:Article titles). English Wikipedia prefers the name that is most commonly used (Wikipedia:Article titles#Use commonly recognizable names). Wikipedia doesn't prefer the author's chosen spelling of their name in English. And Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean) shows that Chung Ho Sung is incorrect, Chung Ho-sung is correct. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Capital letters shows Chyung JinKyu is incorrect, Chyung Jinkyu is correct. If you want to collect many people's opinions, achieve consensus on that through Wikipedia:Requested moves. Sawol (talk) 07:45, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sawol, can you consider withdrawing the criteria for speedy deletion on this APEC foreign ministers template? Try to read the talk page on this template. If there's any redundancy, try to make it more credible. Kim Seong-il

[edit]

Why did you move Kim Sŏng-il to Kim Seong-il? Turnbull and Hawley both use Song-il, not Seong-il. --Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 01:50, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Refer to The Land of Scholars: Two Thousand Years of Korean Confucianism. Samuel Hawley uses Choson, Pusan, and so on. His romanization is biased. Sawol (talk) 02:06, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
How is using McCune-Reishchauer biased? Also, I can't speak Korean, which that book seems to be in (All I see is a 'no' symbol with some Hangul underneath. The cover seems to be English, though..?)--Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 02:08, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wait, it's English now.--Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 02:09, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, one book uses 'Seong-il'. Two books use 'Sŏng-il' or 'Song-il' without the diacritic. It should be 'Sŏng-il', I think.--Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 02:11, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
McCune–Reishchauer of North Korea is biased. Revised Romanization of South Korea too. Anyway, there are many many examples Seong-il in many books Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies, 2001, Asian Anthropology, 2005, New history of Korea, Love Letters from Fathers, Korea’s Historic Clans, Korea: more accurate facts and information, Uncovering the Codes, The Traditional Education of Korea. The reason may be that more South Korean scholars actively study Joseon's history. Sawol (talk) 02:33, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think the issue is that Kim Sŏng-il gets lost under books about Kim Jong-il in searches. I've found three "Kim Sŏng-il" or "Sŏng'il" so far, and will post as many as I find here, so we can see if there is enough of a gap to declare one the common name, or if there is no common name, in which case McCune-Reischauer should be used:

War, and Ethics: A Sourcebook of Textual Traditions, 2014, Great East Asian War and the Birth of the Korean Nation, 2016, and Korean War Captive in Japan, 1597Ð1600: The Writings of Kang Hang,2013 (translated), Earth and Its Peoples: A Global History, Volume II: Since 1500, Society: Civil Society, Democracy and the State, Korean Neo-Confucianism of Yi T'oegye and Yi Yulgok, Statecraft and Korean Institutions: Yu Hyongwon and the Late Choson dynasty --Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 02:44, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Could you open the discussion WP:RM? Let's reach the consensus. User talk space is not suitable for a decision between McCune–Reishchauer and Revised Romanization. Thank you. Sawol (talk) 02:58, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure we need to do that, given that I don't think anyone except us are really editing the article. But If we cannot reach an agreement, then sure.

Looking at the split between 'Song-il', 'Seong-il', 'Sŏng-il' and 'Sŏng'il', I think there is no common English name. According to the manual of style, it should then default to McCune-Reischauer.Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 03:04, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No. According to the manual of style WP:NC-KO#Romanization of names, it should then default to Revised Romanization. "If there is no established English spelling, then Revised Romanization should be used for South Korean and pre-1945 Korean names, McCune–Reischauer for North Korean names." Kim Seong-il is the pre-1945 Korean name. Sawol (talk) 05:53, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I see. The Manual of Style was just talking about the actual text. It seems pretty weird that they recommend opposite conventions for the text and the article title, though. But then you are right, it should stay as 'Seong-il'.--Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 00:32, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Sawol. I recently brought an SPI case concerning Providence (religious movement) and have been trying to figure out the events related to the sweeping rewrite done by Avataron who has now been blocked as a sock. Am trying to figure out what led you to put the histmerge tag on the Avataron's Christian Gospel Mission (Providence) article here, which was a key step that led to overwriting the old (and current) article at Providence (religious movement) with Avataron's whitewashed version. Did Avataron ask you to help them offline or something? I cannot find anything on Wikipedia that led up to that. Can you please explain? Thanks. Jytdog (talk) 00:07, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover granted

[edit]

Hello, Sawol. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, and move subpages when moving the parent page(s).

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Hello, Sawol.

I've seen you editing recently and you seem knowledgeable about Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. Nampohang Station

[edit]

Hi Sawol,

Nampohang Station is not what is south of Nampo Station - Nampo Station is in Hanggu-guyok, to the south of that is the container port. If you look at [2] and scroll down to the third image, the bigger map of Nampo City, you can see in Hanggu-guyok that Sinnampo and Nampo stations are indicated. It's cut off at the top and the bottom, but the Nampohang Line starts at Sinnampo, and runs through Waudo-guyok - the rail line marked on the left side and continues off the bottom of the map... 2Q (talk) 07:49, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@2Q: Thank you for providing detailed explanations. I learned much about Nampohang Line. Could you tell me whether Chinese Wikipedia zh:南浦線 and zh:Template:南浦线 (Nampo Line; Sinnampo StationNampo Station (Pyongnam Line)) exists or not? Pyongnam Line and the map of ko:평남선 of Korean Wikipedia say that the line between Sinnampo Station and Nampo Station (Pyongnam Line) is a part of Pyongnam Line. But zh:平南線 and ko:틀:평남선 exclude the Sinnampo–Nampo line. Japanese Wikipedia ja:平南線 considers the Sinnampo–Nampo line to be the Namp'o Branch of Pyongnam Line. Sawol (talk) 05:03, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The "Nampo Line" on zh.wiki is something I've never seen mentioned before. It's a bit confusing, yeah... Sentetsu's original Pyongnam Line ran from Pyongyang to Nampo, then the Chosen Pyeongan Railway (조선 평안 철도) opened the Onchon Line from the spot where Sinnampo Station is now, to Pyongnam Oncheon... and Sinnampo Station was only opened after the Korean War... but then Gukcheol added the Onchon Line to the Pyongnam Line. So as I understand things, ja:平南線 and the map on ko:평남선 have it right, that the Sinnampo–Nampo line is a branch of the Pyongnam Line (Pyongyang–Sinnampo–Pyongnam Onchon)... 2Q (talk) 05:26, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Stub categories and moves

[edit]

There are several issues here.

Regarding edits like this: indeed , it is not a template; but it is a category containing templates. The edit makes those templates indirect members of Category:Argentina stubs, which is for articles only. Several WikiProject Stub sorting people (myself included) spent a long time tidying up the categorisation of these categories and their templates, including getting the "Foo stub templates" categories out of the "Foo stubs" categories. You have not linked any discussion in your edit summaries - was this discussed anywhere? It took us weeks to get it right, and now you're undoing all our work in the space of a few hours. Have a look at Wikipedia:Database reports/Dubious stub categories: there are 25 pages listed there, just as there have been for almost a year now. When the report is next run - probably on Friday this week - the number of pages that are listed will nearly double because of your incorrect categorisation.

You have made a lot of category moves today. I don't see any reason for these moves in the log, nor can I find any evidence on the category pages that either {{subst:cfr}} or {{subst:cfr-speedy}} had been posted. Hence, there is no record of which discussion led to these moves. It was agreed a few years ago, around about the time that category moves became possible, that category moves should not be performed without either a discussion at WP:CFD or an appropriate notification at WP:CFDS. The accepted practice is that once a category rename is agreed, the bot Cydebot (talk · contribs) would be tasked with both moving the category page and updating its member pages.

If you move a page (whether it be a category or anything else), and make a mistake in the page name that requires a second move, please make sure that you don't move the redirect that was created by the move. There are two ways of fixing a move mistake: both of them require you to first ensure that you are on the page having the new name, and are not on the page for the redirect.

  1. Move the incorrectly-named page to the correct name. This is easiest, but it will leave a double redirect.
  2. Move the incorrectly-named page back to the previous name, then reload the page to ensure that you are not on the redirect, then move it a third time, to the correct name.

Whichever method is used, it means that the page history is kept together instead of becoming divorced from the page content.

--Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 10:19, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is very useful that "Foo templates" and "Foo stubs" categories are under the "Foo" categories. There are many more examples. Category:Arts templates under Category:Arts, Category:Argentina templates under Category:Argentina, etc. And I will follow WP:CFDS for "WikiProject Foo stub templates" categories. I have nominated the remainders at WP:CFDS#Current nominations. I appreciate your interest in my contributions. Sawol (talk) 15:08, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As I suspected, Wikipedia:Database reports/Dubious stub categories has grown: from 25 entries to 71 entries, much more than I had feared. Content categories that are intended for articles should not include templates, and project categories should not contain articles: please undo your edits. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:33, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Are the only exceptions in stub categories? What do you think about Category:Argentina templates under Category:Argentina? Could you show me the consensus that categories should not include their templates their templates categories? You have make subjective claims without a reason. Sawol (talk) 10:23, 3 February 2018 (UTC) Sorry, categories, not templates. I expect your reply. Sawol (talk) 13:23, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not saying that categories should not include their templates. I'm saying that content categories (categories intended for encyclopedia content, i.e. articles) should not contain templates, since templates are not encyclopedia content. This is WP:CAT#T, to which I referred you earlier. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:46, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
WP:CAT#T says "Templates should be categorized according to kind of template, but not by template content". It doesn't matter if the template is in a content category directly, or there are intermediate categories. Templates aren't content, and don't belong in content categories. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:50, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Chiming in to add corroboration to Redrose64 🌹 (talk)'s information. Also, I can't find any discussion at WP:CFDS#Current nominations as mentioned above. Please provide a link to any discussion currently taking place about this matter. Thanks - ~Her Pegship~ 19:24, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Fourth problem: when you make edits like this, you must ensure that the new category is placed inside the <noinclude>...</noinclude> tags, to ensure that articles are not categorised with the stub template. See WP:TEMPLATECAT. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:13, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jebi Sports Club or Jebi has WP:Sources per Jebi Sports -wiki and Jebi site:kcna.co.jp of Korean Central News Agency. 제비 is not a place name. Juche 주체 doesn't use McCune-Reischauer. Sawol (talk) 07:03, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article Waudo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:V and WP:GEOLAND, no information beyond statistics and coordinates.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Tavix (talk) 03:35, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect suppression

[edit]

Hello Sawol, can you explain why you are suppressing redirects when performing moves such as this one? It appears that you often intend to create disambiguation pages when making these sorts of changes, but it makes it more difficult to fix the incoming links to the disambiguation page when the page history doesn't show which of the articles was previously at the base title. I am under the impression that I may sometimes perform these sorts of suppressions in relation to disambiguation pages as part of closing multimove requests that require deletion to be performed, but I would not perform redirect suppressions for bold moves or creation of new dabs. Is there a WP:PMRC criterion you feel these fall under? If not, I am under the impression that this may fall under WP:PMRR #3, so please consider not suppressing the redirects when making these types of moves. Best, Dekimasuよ! 09:29, 17 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sawol, I went to your RfC on Talk:List_of_Major_League_Baseball_players_from_South_Korea#RfC_about_writing_Chinese_characters and noticed the format was not typical of the RfC you were posing. Template:Madinah Region

[edit]

Hello there Sawol. I've been cleaning up after a recent requested move that resulted in two Saudi provinces having their articles moved to Mecca Region and Medina Region. I see that you acted on my speedy move requests for the related templates, so thank you for that. However, there's an issue with one of those moves. I requested that Template:Al Madinah Region be moved to Template:Medina Region to match the article (diff), but you moved it to Template:Madinah Region instead, I'm sure as an oversight. Can you please move the template from Template:Madinah Region to Template:Medina Region, in order to match the article title? It's fine to have the current title as a redirect. Thanks for taking a look at this for me; as as IP editor I can't do the move myself. 50.248.234.77 (talk) 15:49, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

@Sawol: Why did you delete Talk:Jung Yun-seok? Please reply! -St3095 (talk) 05:18, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I explained the reason at Talk:Jung Yun-seok. We should keep Help:Page history. Sawol (talk) 05:32, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear, redirects should almost never be repressed when moving pages away from long-standing titles. I have just recreated several of these that were done incorrectly, such as at Kim Kyungrin (poet) and Jaime Bravo (Chilean goalkeeper). These can break internal and external links and suppressing them is in violation of WP:PMRR. If this continues it will be necessary to revoke the page mover right. Best, Dekimasuよ! 16:11, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that I also told you about this previously and you said you would not continue with the behavior. You should really go back through your previous moves and fix anywhere else this has taken place, now that I see that it is an ongoing issue. Dekimasuよ! 16:20, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have had to readd another redirect from Eun Sun Kim to Kim Eun-sun. The page was there for two months. This is not a redirect that is eligible for speedy deletion and would likely not be deleted at WP:RFD. Please consider this a final warning on the page mover right. Dekimasuよ! 10:21, 20 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Same at Jeon Jae-ho, which was there for 10 years before you moved it to Chun Jae-ho. Dekimasuよ! 10:24, 20 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dekimasu: No pages that link to the target article. Are redirects the more, the better? Redirects are all about it being old? How long redirects live depends on deleting them? two months? Can you show me any of policies about this? Please teach me through documents. Sawol (talk) 11:01, 20 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Redirects are not all about being old, but I haven't made any complaints about new pages that you moved immediately in light of the fact that they have probably not accumulated external links or links in page histories. In general, valid redirects are either helpful or harmless and should not be deleted. So first, WP:PMRR: "The user right ...can be revoked at any time by an administrator without any process or prior notice in any of the following circumstances: ...The editor demonstrated a pattern of failing to exercise sufficient care when moving pages, resulting in serious errors appearing on pages, or when using suppress redirect." According to this it was already possible to revoke the page mover right, so please do take this as constructive criticism.
Next, as a general issue, we should retain redirects from plausible alternative titles. The fact that Chun Jae-ho was at Jeon Jae-ho for ten years is itself a good indication that the other title might be used by someone. When the issue is spelling (or romanization), having redirects from alternative versions is useful.
Third, WP:R#CRD. It notes, "The major reasons why deletion of redirects is harmful are: 1)a redirect may contain nontrivial edit history; 2)if a redirect is reasonably old (or a redirect is created as a result of moving a page that has been there for quite some time), then it is quite possible that its deletion will break links in old, historical versions of some other articles—such an event is very difficult to envision and even detect. 3) Additionally, there could exist links to the URL anywhere on the Internet. If so, then those links might not show up by checking for (clicking on) "WhatLinksHere"—since those links might come from somewhere outside Wikipedia. Therefore consider the deletion only of either really harmful redirects or of very recent ones." There are more reasons for keeping a redirect at WP:R#KEEP.
Finally, suppressing redirects is inappropriate if the redirect would not have been eligible for speedy deletion under the criteria set forth at WP:CSD. The only criteria that specifically apply to redirects are the four at WP:RCSD: cross-namespace redirects, implausible typos, and a criterion related to files found on Commons. Others that might apply are in the general criteria, such as nonsense pages or attack pages. None of the examples I have noted here would have been eligible for speedy deletion, and would probably also have been kept at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion. For administrators, invalid deletions would be evidence of tool misuse. But to some extent it is part of the problem that you are supposed to know and be careful about these things before using the page mover right at all. Dekimasuよ! 13:34, 20 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The underlying principle is "when in doubt, don't". There is usually no reason to actively suppress a redirect unless you are performing a cross-namespace move. Dekimasuよ! 13:37, 20 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:2002 FIBA World Championship for Women squads, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 01:45, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Sawol. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "2002 FIBA World Championship for Women squads".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! UnitedStatesian (talk) 18:55, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

락랑구역

[edit]

Hi! I noticed that you moved the article Nakrang-guyok to Nangnang-guyok to Nakrang-guyok to Rakrang-guyok, and ultimately to Rangnang-guyok in November 2012. According to my understanding of Korean, this area in Pyongyang should be transliterated as Rakrang-guyok due to the pronunciation of hanja 樂浪 and also due to the fact that Beginning-Sound Rule is not applicable for Koreans outside South Korea. Could you explain to me the reason for your move, especially the name Rangnang and Nangnang? MNXANL (talk) 08:06, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, MNXANL. I moved it as Old revision of Rangrang-guyok in December 2015. See edit summary North–South differences in the Korean language#Pronunciation. 식료 (ㄱ+ㄹ) is pronounced as 싱료. So, 락랑 is pronounced as 랑랑. There is controversy surrounding romanization of North Korean: e.g. Chagang Province v.s. Jagang Province, Nampo v.s. Nampho. Anyway, WP:NCKOREAN#Place names is the current consensus. Sawol (talk) 11:25, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"The" COVID-19 pandemic

[edit]

In case you haven't noticed, you need to be careful to fix double redirects when performing these moves as the template gets messed up elsewhere.

And, that aside, I do not think this is a good idea. While adding "the" does seem to create more natural English, it is not consistent to how it was before. Further, when instances of the original templates and links are replaced, your addition of the word "the" is going to complicate that task. You aren't even leaving redirects behind. -- tariqabjotu 15:04, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, at the very least, stop using the no-redirect option. As an example, look at what you've done to the COVID-19 pandemic article. Which guideline do you feel omitting redirects is appropriate here? -- tariqabjotu 15:07, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your advice. I used the no-redirect option for the page without pages that link to that. I think the less redirect, the better for talk pages, templates. Sawol (talk) 15:55, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate station recapitalizations

[edit]

Sawol, based on recent RM discussions that you've been aware of and we've interacted about (most recently Talk:Pyongyang_station#Requested_move_5_May_2020), you must know that there is a broad consensus to use lowercase station for Korean station names, with the exception of Seoul Station and two others that you did a special-case RM discussion for at Talk:Seoul_Station#Requested_move_2_May_2020. The Seoul Station exception and the Korea consensus are also discussed in this Thai stations RM, where they seem to be broadly accepted (except maybe not your particular shortlist of 3 exceptions). How can you now say that one little RM on exceptions justifies caps on all the other stations that you've been recapitalizing? And why would you again use your page-mover power to gain the upper hand in a title dispute after I complained to you about that behavior and pointed out the policy against it recently (at User talk:Dicklyon#Korean station caps)? Please revert those inappropriate moves. Dicklyon (talk) 16:19, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Today's move is under appropriate station capitalizations per Talk:Seoul_Station#Requested_move_2_May_2020. They are big railway stations of big cities like Seoul Station. Hakpo station is not listed at Talk:Pyongyang_station#Requested_move_5_May_2020. That you moved is the same as that I moved. The bigger problem is your edits like [3]. Your attitude is coercive. Sawol (talk) 16:56, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure you know I'm not complaining about Seoul Station, but about the undiscussed ones including Gangneung station, Pyeongchang station, Pohang station, Mokpo station, Naju station, Gwangju Songjeong station, and many more. You can see the obvious controversy inherent in your move warring that required your special page mover rights because I made it clear that the consensus was that these caps were incorrect per WP style. Please fix, or you will have to give up the page mover right. Dicklyon (talk) 17:20, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for fixing (most of) them. Dicklyon (talk) 03:53, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On July 26 (UTC), you did a page-swap with the 2 pages I mentioned in the header; the best summary I see is "Chicken", and that's it. Why? On Yangnyeom chicken, you don't see the article title in the article itself, you only see Yangnyeom chikin. That right there is inconsistency between the article's title and content that would be worthy of r/midlyinfuriating. Could you explain this in more detail or otherwise revert he page swap? Can I Log In (talk) 05:15, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Refer to chicken and fried chicken of Basic Korean Dictionary. You can request a page move per WP:RM#CM. Thank you. Sawol (talk) 05:55, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still not sure about that page and wording swap. There's a DYK nomination you might want to comment on where the reviewer noticed the inconsistency. Can I Log In (talk) 05:30, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Siegel (politician)

[edit]

Hi. You flagged my article on Mike Siegel (politician). I used an article on another politician as a template and then altered the information. The article on Siegel was in my Sandbox, and I have since added a header/used the wizard that moves it into the draft articles section. Do I need to do anything further? I'm new to editing articles.

Update: Just wanted to thank you for all your help! I'm an absolute newcomer to editing Wikipedia, and I'm sure I'm making several rookie mistakes, so I'm glad you're here to help out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gnaanamurthy (talkcontribs) 13:12, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You have tried multiple times now to have this template deleted; first, by T3, and second, by the improper use of your page mover permission to perform an unasked-for move with suppressed redirect to the creator's userspace. After the T3 was declined, you should have gone to TFD and started a discussion about having the template deleted. I would really like your thoughts on this matter as to why you felt that abusing your PERM was acceptable. Primefac (talk) 18:28, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

what is so special about Kim Jin-hyun (footballer, born in Haenam) that his naming is not following Wikipedia:Naming conventions (sportspeople)#Association football (soccer). See #2b "If the footballers were born in different years, use the year they were born." There is South Korean Kim Jin-hyun (footballer, born 1999) so Kim Jin-hyun (footballer, born in Haenam) should be at [[Kim Jin-hyun (footballer, born 1987). Are you merging two pages of India national football team?

[edit]

Are you merging India national football team results 1960-1979 and India national football team results 1960-69+1970-79?

Don't do it, let 1960-70 remain a seperate page as well as 1970-79.

It is better organized and maintainable if it is decade wise. Footy2000 (talk) 08:58, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know Korean?

[edit]

Hi

Do you know Korean? :) I've been writing a lot of North Korean lists lately. All the central committees and their offshoots and doing the same for the Supreme People's Assembly (still not close to done). I saw you edited the 1st Cabinet of North Korea. Great edits! I only use Google Translate and they are, I think, often a bit misleading. If you know Korean would you be interested in helping me out with translations? --Ruling party (talk) 12:59, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know Korean. I have corrected misspelled Korean names in 1st Cabinet of North Korea. Thanks. Sawol (talk) 14:24, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! :) I will go over you're translations later and add them to other articles. But I have one question for—only if you have the time. Would you be interested in checking the name translations on 1st Central Committee of the Workers' Party of North Korea? It's currently a nominee for Featured List candidate (I'm planning to nominate the 8 CCs to FL).

Again, thank you very much for you're edits. It inspires me to do even more edits when I know that there are editors like you out there that fix my mistakes :) --Ruling party (talk) 14:27, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cluebot III index pages

[edit]

I see that you have nominated a couple of Cluebot III's "indices" pages for speedy deletion. Can you give a more explic explanation of what the problem is? JBW (talk) 10:18, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:ClueBot III/Master Detailed Indices/File talk:Syrian Civil War.svg and User:ClueBot III/Indices/File talk:Syrian Civil War.svg are not about File talk:Syrian Civil War.svg. Sawol (talk)
OK, thanks for the clarification. I see from a post by Liz at User talk:ClueBot Commons that this is a recurring problem, so it no doubt needs further action than just deleting the pages. Normally I would say we shouldn't take any action until the bot operator, Cobi, has commented, but since Cobi hasn't edited for about a month or so that might mean leaving erroneous pages around for quite a while, so I'll go back and delete the pages that I saw. Tagging pages for deletion

[edit]

Hello, Sawol,

I know you are an experienced editor but I wanted to remind you that every time you tag a page for deletion (CSD, PROD, AFD/TFD/CFD/etc.), you should post a notice on the talk page of the page creator so they are aware that a page they created might be deleted and the reason why. Without a notice, they may not even know a page has been deleted. I recommend using Twinkle because once you set up your Preferences to "Notify page creator", the program will post these notices for you whenever you tag a page so it makes things easy for you. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 05:25, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sawol,

I just deleted this page which was tagged for being a duplicate of Kim Min-jun (footballer) and then you moved Kim Min-jun (footballer) to the deleted page location! What is going on here? Was the wrong page deleted? Liz Read! Talk! 06:02, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There are many footballers named Kim Min-jun. The creator User:Davidlofgren1996 made Kim Min-jun (footballer, born February 2000). But User:Brascoian intervened in this. User:Davidlofgren1996 should revert User:Brascoian's move. Sawol (talk) 06:10, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz: @Sawol: Hey guys, apologies if I've done anything wrong regarding Wiki procedures, etc. I noted that there were a lot of people with the name Kim Min-jun, so I figured it would be best to set that page up as a disambiguation page, as Kim Min-jun (footballer, born January 2000) is clearly not the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Would it not be worth having Kim Min-jun (footballer) redirect to Kim Min-jun, in case somebody else tries to make a Wikipedia page for another footballer named Kim Min-jun in future? That way, they'll know straight away that there is more than one footballer with this name?
Also, Sawol, I note that you've moved Kim Min-jun (footballer, born January 1994) to Kim Min-june (footballer, born January 1994). Do you have a direct source for this information, that way we can cite it in the article? If his name is indeed Kim Min-june, then we can just move the article to Kim Min-june, and have him linked under the disambiguation page. Thanks Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 11:51, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Davidlofgren1996: If needed, you can make [Kim Min-jun (footballer)] redirect to Kim Min-jun. Because you did not make the redirect, I did, too. I added references to Kim Min-june (footballer, born January 1994). I am late in referring because of Pages that link to "Kim Min-jun". But, I disagree on moving [Kim Min-june (footballer, born January 1994)] to [Kim Min-june]. Kim Min-jun = Kim Min-june = Kim Min-joon = Kim Meen-joon. 김민준 choose one of them. Sawol (talk) 08:58, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ClueBot III pages

[edit]

Hey, Sawol,

I appreciate the work that you are doing but I wanted to ask you, out of the thousands of subpages that ClueBot III has created, how are you choosing the ones you tag for deletion? Honestly, I'm sure some are just junk but given the huge number, I wouldn't know where to start and I'm curious how you select the pages you tag. Thanks for any explanation you can provide. Liz Read! Talk! 06:18, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Liz. The junk subpages that ClueBot III has created originate in Users' wrong uses. For examples of wrong uses, there are mismatched values, inserted blanks, misspelled underscores, etc. of the parameter |archiveprefix=. When a main page is moved to new name, users have to move its talk page and its subpages. And users have to correct the parameter |archiveprefix= of ClueBot III. At first I observed Special:WhatLinksHere/!Ô language. Nowadays, I observe Special:Contributions/ClueBot III. Thanks. Sawol (talk) 07:33, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that sounds like more work than I expected. It sounds like there are lots of ways archiving can go wrong over the years. Thanks for clearing out all of the old, dead pages. Liz Read! Talk! 04:04, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I realize that this work is probably endless but if you are looking for another ClueBot III mess to clean up, check out the archives for Talk:IBM System/370...five pages that probably could be one. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 18:52, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

archives

[edit]

Hey, Sawol! I added that archives a few days ago with this edit, then today realized I must not have seen the archives that were already there. You think we need two? —valereee (talk) 14:28, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What are two? Whatever they are, wait until User:ClueBot III/Master Detailed Indices/Talk:Kofta's renewal. Sawol (talk) 14:36, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There are two archive sections in the headers of Talk:Kofta. I also don't understand this edit. There was a link to the archives in the archives box, and now there isn't. —valereee (talk) 14:43, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't catch your two archive sections as before. One may be User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis. And what is the other? ClueBot don't allow blank in parameters. A blank makes Talk:Kofta/Archives/ 1. ClueBot's parameter |archivebox=yes is replaced by {{archives}}. Sawol (talk) 14:56, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The headers at Talk:Kofta are, in this order: skip to table of contents. A merge notification. A not a forum notification. A find sources line. An archives. Wikiprojects. Another archives. —valereee (talk) 15:03, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, an archives is {{talk header}} and another User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis. {{talk header}} just has archives's links. Are you satisfied with Special:Permalink/1041629815? Link boxes {{talk header}} and {{archives}} can not generate auto archiving. Sawol (talk) 15:59, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there are still two archives boxes, and both list no bluelinked archives. I guess a bot will be along to turn the second one blue? I don't understand why we'd need two archive search boxes, but then this whole area is something I don't really understand. The template I've been using is at Help:Archives (plain and simple), which was created because Help:Archiving a talk page I found very confusing. Now you seem dissatisfied with search boxes. How about Special:Permalink/1041717773? Sawol (talk) 02:53, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Are you challenging the original record?

[edit]

What's the purpose of changing the title of Lady Habaek? It is written in the Gwanggaeto Stele, and you decided to put the fictional name given much later? Kadrun (talk) 06:20, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

하백부인 is wrong. Find the proper translation of 하백녀. I recommend to open Wikipedia:Requested moves about this. Sawol (talk) 06:26, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No one said it is 하백부인. It is 하백녀 or 하백여랑 according to the records. Kadrun (talk) 06:30, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ha Baek is her father. How Lady Habaek is Ha Baek's daughter? Lady Habaek is 하백부인. Open Wikipedia:Requested moves. Sawol (talk) 06:33, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
하백녀 <- 녀 can be translated to woman, lady, girl, etc. If you want to avoid using the word lady since it may confuse with 부인, then maiden will the the correct term to use for 녀 & 여랑. Also, it is 여랑 not 녀랑. 女 is either 여 or 녀, and there's no such 녀랑. 여랑 is the correct term. Kadrun (talk) 06:40, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Are we going keep it as Lady Yuhwa, which is the fictional name, or use Maiden Habaek per historical record? Lady Yuhwa shouldn't be the title, instead should be treated as also known as. Kadrun (talk) 06:48, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
녀/여 has a different meaning. 녀 takes daughter. 하백녀 written in the Gwanggaeto Stele means Ha Baek's daughter. I cannot determine the title. Lady Yuhwa might be provisional. And 하백 여랑 or 하백녀랑 is correct. Open Wikipedia:Requested moves. Thanks. Sawol (talk) 07:01, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't have issue, I will move the page to Maiden Habaek; I want Wikipedia to contain the factual as the main, and other as side. There are couple made up history of Goguryeo within Samguk Sagi (ex: early Eastern Buyeo), and these need to be corrected. Lady Yuhwa is associated with Eastern Buyeo story/myth, while Maiden Habaek is (Northern) Buyeo.Kadrun (talk) 08:27, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I oppose Maiden Habaek. Habaek is her father's name. Habaek is not her name. The Gwanggaeto Stele call her 하백녀랑 Habaengnyeorang. And she is not a maiden. She had a son. We stand a chance of naming as Lady Habaengnyeorang. But I still support Lady Yuhwa as provisional name. Sawol (talk) 10:04, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
She is a legendary/religious figure, nothing wrong about being maiden and have a son. What about Jesus and Maria? Same case. Also calling her Lady Habaengnyeorang is equivalent to calling Sejong the Great as Sejong Daewang the Great. Also non-pronouns such as titles are usually translated to English ex: Ivan the Terrible. Suggested project

[edit]

Hello, Sawol,

If you aren't sick of doing archive fixes and are looking for another project to take on, there is Talk:Vietnam War POW/MIA issue archives which could use a bit of straightening up. They showed up on the Orphaned talk subpage list. Thanks!

Have a great New Year! Liz Read! Talk! 04:58, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Liz. Talk:Vietnam_War_POW/MIA_issue/Archives/... are on the orphaned talk subpages list, I think it is due to User:Explicit's edit [4]. I wish you have a great New Year. Sawol (talk) 06:06, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A request

[edit]

Hello, Sawol,

I have a request to make. When you are cleaning up archives on User pages of a still active editor, like Nick Moyes, I would appreciate it, and I think the editor would to, if you would just post a note on their talk page explaining what you are doing, cleaning up their User talk archive pages. You tagged some of their pages for deletion and this might be a good option but the editor should know if their User pages are being deleted, especially if there is a problem with their setting for the archiving bot.

If the editor is long gone from Wikipedia, I don't think notifications are necessary. Thanks again for all of the work you are doing, it's just a matter of keeping editors informed when you are working in their User space. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 03:24, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you if you have started doing this. I saw you left a message to Nick but haven't looked into the situation with other editors. Just thought I'd check in as I saw what must have been some late night edits from you today. I think we are on opposite ends of the planet. Stay well! Liz Read! Talk! 21:26, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cluebot

Just make me a list of all the Cluebot page that need a G6 or G8 and I'll delete them. I think it's a lot easier to batch-delete them than watch you pick them off one by one over the course of a few hours. Primefac (talk) 09:41, 8 February 2022 (UTC) (please ping on reply)[reply]

Grand Inquisitor

[edit]

I just wanted to thank you for cleaning up my mess with the grand inquisitor dab and redirects. I rushed those a bit after starting on them thinking I would have more time than I ended up. I really should avoid complex moves on busy workdays. Your handling of it is definitely much cleaner and I will keep the option of combining dabs in mind. ASUKITE 14:20, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cluebot III archiving rate changes

[edit]

Why are you changing the archiving rates on a bunch of pages? I'd only just set it up on Talk:Electrical reactance and that's the rate I really intended. What was wrong with it? SpinningSpark 18:53, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There were some defects in your setting at Talk:Electrical reactance. The parameter |archiveprefix= should not have a blank between reactance and /. Underscores cause problems. The maximum size 17500 Byte of the archive was very small. Sawol (talk) 23:04, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Correcting syntax errors is fine. Not too bothered by the change of archive size either, although I would argue that a smaller archive size is beneficial for slow moving pages so the time range in each archive is not huge. But none of that addresses my main concern – the huge change to age before archiving. More than that, what gives you the right to run around imposing an undiscussed standard for archiving on pages that you have no connection with. Basically, you are trying to impose your personal preferences on other editors who are actually working on the page. This wasn't the only one, there's a bunch of them popped up in my watchlist waiting for action. SpinningSpark 17:00, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gojong

[edit]

Hi, Sawol. I heard you moved the page Gojong of Korea. I didn't want to make the readers think that he was the king of only one kingdom. That's why I moved the page. And also, the column that states that he was the king of Joseon could be easily skipped as most of the public would look at the first and second column only. Hopefully you would understand what I mean. Wayner235! (talk) 12:08, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Imjin war

[edit]

Again, Sawol, STOP moving pages anyhow. Korea DID NOT EXIST at the time and I already stated the reason to move. Remember, try to make stuff to their own time (eg Joseon existed from 1392-1897, no such thing as "Korea") Wayner235! (talk) 03:03, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Wayner235!: Open Wikipedia:Requested_moves. Korea derives from Goryeo. Korea means all historic states on the Korean Peninsula as well as the Imperial Korea, North Korea, and South Korea. Sawol (talk) 05:01, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
