Getting started[edit]

Step 1: Log in to Wikipedia

  • Go to en.wikipedia.org or start from this event page
  • Select 'Log in' on the top right of the screen or select 'Create an account' if you don't yet have a username.
  • Follow prompts

Step 2: Open today's article work list/reserve an article:

Step 3: Edit

  • Complete some or all of the suggested tasks in the article work list. Instructions for each editing action are below.
  • Don't forget to publish when you are done (blue 'Publish' bottom on top right when in editing mode]

Editing instructions[edit]

Adding/removing text[edit]

  • After selecting 'Edit', click anywhere in the article
  • Start typing or removing text as needed

Cite your sources[edit]

Note: All text must have supporting sources. To cite the source where you found the information...

  • Place your cursor at the end of the text you added. You can also also sources for text that other have added.
-Select 'cite' in the formatting bar and use one of the following options
-Select the 'Automatic' tab to add the URL for the site where you got the information
-Select 'Manual' for books, newspapers, and other sources. This option allows you to provide more detail about the source.
-Select 'Reuse' to cite a sort that has already been cited within the article

Adding new sections[edit]

  • In editing mode, place cursor where the new section heading will come
  • Select Header to open the dropdown menu
  • Select 'Header' from the drop down menu
  • Type the name of the header
  • Click enter or return on your keyboard to return to the regular font size
  • Note: This can be done to add an external link section

Hyperlinks[edit]

Adding internal hyperlinks (link to other Wikipedia articles)

  • Highlight the word or phrase where you would like to link to appear
  • Select the link icon
  • Use the list to find and select the article/link destination

Tip: Only link to a word or phrase the first time it appears

Removing internal hyperlinks

  • In editing mode, click the existing hyperlink
  • Click the red circle with the line through it

Adding external hyperlinks

Note: These are links to websites outside of Wikipedia that may appear in an article's 'External links' section
  • Go to the article's 'External links' section.
  • If there's already a list of other links, add the a bullet point
  • Add text describing what you are linking to i.e. 'Interview with... from XYZ source'.
  • Highlight the text
  • Select the link icon
  • Select Link to external source
  • Paste to URL (website) you are linking to
  • Select 'Done'
Note: If adding an external link to materials from the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, be sure to go to the AAPB page you are linking to, then go to 'Citations'. Copy the text and paste the text into the external links list in the article. For example, the hyperlink to one of AAPB resources would look like this:

Adding photos from Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Note: Only photos in Wikimedia Commons can be added to Wikipedia articles

Adding photos to articles

  • In editing mode, place cursor where you want the picture to go
  • Select Insert, then Images/media
  • Enter the title of the image you want to insert. This can be found in the Google sheet
  • Select the image
  • Caption the image with the person's name or other information. You can find more information by clicking on the full commons link in the spreadsheet.
  • Insert the image. If you don't like the placement, click on it once inserted and delete.

Adding photos to infoboxes

  • In editing mode, click on the infobox if one exists
  • Select edit
  • Scroll down and select 'Add more information'
  • Select 'Image'
  • Enter the name of the image and select 'Apply changes'

Chapters
Wikimedia chapters are independent organizations founded to support and promote the Wikimedia projects in a specified geographical region (in most cases, a country). Like the Wikimedia Foundation, they aim to "empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally". There are currently 39 chapters, with at least one on every inhabited continent., i.e. Wikimedia DC
Wikimedia thematic organizations
Thematic organizations are incorporated independent non-profits representing the Wikimedia movement and supporting work focused on a specific theme, topic, subject or issue within or across countries and regions. i.e., Wikimedia Medicine.
User groups
Wikimedia user groups are intended to be simple and flexible affiliates that are an alternative to chapters and thematic organizations - which require more formal requirements. User groups are highly valued as equal players in the Wikimedia movement, i.e., Art+Feminism
