[edit]From Ukrainian Микола́їв (Mykolájiv) (cognate with Russian Никола́ев (Nikolájev)), from Микола́й (Mykoláj, “Nicholas”) (cognate with Russian Никола́й (Nikoláj)), commemorating the fall of the Turkish fortress of Ochakov/Ochakiv on St Nicholas’ day, December 6, 1789.
