[edit]From Middle Welsh arð, from Proto-Brythonic *arð, from Proto-Celtic *ardwos (compare Irish ard), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erdʰwós, from *h₃erdʰ-. Cognate with Latin arduus (“high; difficult”) and Ancient Greek ὀρθός (orthós, “upright, straight”).
