Knowledge-based transition to bioeconomy
About us
Development of knowledge-based, environment-friendly low-waste technologies for obtaining competitive materials and products from wood and other types of plant biomass for sustainable utilization of natural resources for economic, social and ecological benefits. The LSIWC research themes’ priorities embrace practically all fields related to the utilization of wood and lignocellulose biomass and are based on interdisciplinary theoretical wood and lignocellulosic materials studies on the molecular and nano-level. The main areas of research are: ^structure, bio- and weathering durability, degradation mechanisms of wood and wood based materials by microorganisms and under environmental impact, methods for improving their sustainability properties (including modification and surface protection) to enhance competitiveness with non-renewable building materials; ^biorefinery approaches, development of technologies for wasteless cascade use of wood components for obtaining chemical compounds, composite and hybrid materials and added value products designed for the food industry, agriculture, pharmacy, healthcare, etc.; ^rational use of woodworking, wood and biomass processing residues for innovative multifunctional products (including fiber and insulation materials) for agriculture, building, the transport field, forestry and environment protection.

We strongly support the development of a new biorefinery ecosystem in Latvia. ✍ Last week Uģis Cābulis, the scientific director of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote the processing of biomass into energy and various consumer products in Latvia. ⚙ Biorefining is a set of technologies that allows you to replace the use of fossil resources, with renewable ones for the production of various valuable products, thus reducing the ecological footprint. 🌱 Bioeconomy already makes a huge contribution to Latvia's manufacturing industry, providing 125,000 jobs, and it has great growth potential. 🤝 The Memorandum was signed by 22 partners, and it envisages cooperation between entrepreneurs, academia, scientific institutions, state administration, and supports the development of new value chains in order to double the size of the national economy based on sustainable technologies. The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry is one of Latvia's oldest scientific institutes with decades of experience in the rational use of timber and other biomass. As one of the most active bioeconomy players in the Baltics, we are ready for effective breakthroughs in the development of biorefining 💡 https://lnkd.in/dNRN2fj3

🍄 🔬 Various fungi find their way into the research carried out at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry as a valued biomass in composites, and biotechnologies, or, on the other hand, as an opponent in wood protection studies! Meanwhile, most Latvians are passionate about mushrooms and their delectable properties, so we would like to present the recently published CONSPECTUS OF THE LATVIAN MACROSCOPIC BASIDIOMYCETES, with our colleague Dr.biol. Ilze Irbe among its authors. Acknowledgements to Ilze for the photos of the Chicken of the woods, link to the conspectus in the comments 👇

No better time to think about cooperation in Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) projects than now! Thanks to Apvārsnis Eiropa Latvijas Nacionālais kontaktpunkts for organising the CBE JU Informative seminar 💡 Materials from the seminar, including the presentation about the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry and VIOBOND project given by our colleague Janis Rizikovs, can be found on the web page of Latvian Council of Science https://lnkd.in/dSwcuTPA
Participated in well organized seminar by National Contact point for Horizon Europe (Apvārsnis Eiropa Latvijas Nacionālais kontaktpunkts) and Latvian Council of Science. There were nice and detailed presentations about the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) proposal submission possibilities as well as role of Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) in networking and matchmaking. Represented VIOBOND project submission chalenges from the perspective of the science and Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, as well as from the perspective of industry presented by Kristaps Stankus from Latvijas Finieris AS.
