❗ ❗ Don't miss the 20th Annual Meeting of the Northern European Network for Wood Science and Engineering WSE2024, to be held in Edinburgh on 22nd-24th October! The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry and the Network's National coordinator Edgars Kuka would like to invite you to participate in #WSE2024, which will include a pre-conference #training #school on #communication and target group #engagement, and an advanced and valuable scientific #conference program 💡 The network is supported by the Nordic Forest Research (SNS). This year's meeting is organised by Edinburgh Napier University, which will welcome the participants to it's #architectural stunner - the Stewart Lindsay Lecture Theatre, a.k.a. the "egg", which is an elliptical ovoid lined with birch plywood on the inside 🤩 The meeting will cover: ◻ Wood physics and mechanics ◻ Wood protection, durability, degradation and service life ◻ Wood chemistry and modified wood ◻ Timber engineering and wood technology ◻ Engineered wood products & composites ◻ Application of wood-based materials ◻ Drying and wood-water interactions ◻ Processing, machining, manufacturing, the timber resource and value chains ◻ Environmental impact and circularity of wood and wood-based materials ◻ Education, training and skills The deadline for registering your topic is 15th July with a short abstract, but the extended abstracts should be submitted by 15th August 📅

A new #initiative has been launched for a #greener future! We strongly support the development of a new biorefinery ecosystem in Latvia. ✍ Last week Uģis Cābulis, the scientific director of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote the processing of biomass into energy and various consumer products in Latvia. ⚙ Biorefining is a set of technologies that allows you to replace the use of fossil resources, with renewable ones for the production of various valuable products, thus reducing the ecological footprint. 🌱 Bioeconomy already makes a huge contribution to Latvia's manufacturing industry, providing 125,000 jobs, and it has great growth potential. 🤝 The Memorandum was signed by 22 partners, and it envisages cooperation between entrepreneurs, academia, scientific institutions, state administration, and supports the development of new value chains in order to double the size of the national economy based on sustainable technologies. The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry is one of Latvia's oldest scientific institutes with decades of experience in the rational use of timber and other biomass. 🍄 🔬 Various fungi find their way into the research carried out at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry as a valued biomass in composites, and biotechnologies, or, on the other hand, as an opponent in wood protection studies! Meanwhile, most Latvians are passionate about mushrooms and their delectable properties, so we would like to present the recently published CONSPECTUS OF THE LATVIAN MACROSCOPIC BASIDIOMYCETES, with our colleague Dr.biol.
