Steward requests/Global permissions/2010-11

I have been a Wikimedian (more specifically, a Wikipedian) who helps where he can. I have rollback on the English and Simple English Wikipedias, and reviewer on the English Wikipedia, where I am also approved for ACC. I have also read through Global rollback, and reviewing my edits, you would notice that I have a lot of anti-vandalism experience (that is my main task on the English Wikipedia). I would like to be more equipped to help in a broader range cross-wiki, and so, ask for the global rollback right and your encouragement. --Hazard-SJ ^Talk 02:22, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

  Note for Hazard-SJ: #cvn-sw is, by definition, an IRC channel, but little conversation goes on there... it's mostly used as a high-speed multiproject RSS feed where edits on several hundred projects are reported to the same location. If you dislike the cliqueishness that accompanies various IRC functions at times and you're technically savvy, you can use the Wikimedia IRC servers instead, where users are simply not allowed to converse at all: The only text feed is from the RC system itself. If you're simply unable to use IRC at all, you can still contribute to SWMT, but will likely need to do so by perusing the various bot-reported vandalism reports on Meta or by manually visiting the various RC pages on the different projects. The last idea would be to visit each project you want to help individually and subscribe to their RC pages as RSS feeds in your browser or RSS client. It really depends on your reasoning as to why you don't want to/can't use IRC. Kylu 17:12, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

A wikimedian home to Malayalam Wikipedia. As Shiju Alex explained above we both are involved in helping activities Indian language Wikimedia projects, especially to develop writing tools for them. To maximize our efforts we need sysop rights there. So I request you to grant gloabl sysop flang for me. Currently I hold sysop flags at ml.wikipedia and ml.wikibooks. Thank you. • Oppose. You have limited cross-wiki experience and no experience working in administrative areas of smaller wikis. The global sysop flag gives you access to the whole array of sysop tools, not just the ability to edit css and mediawiki namespace pages. • Oppose Get local adminship, you don't need a global flag for what you want to do; more importantly, you will be explicitly forbidden to use the global flag for content edits and edits that are not anti-vandalism related. Once again, I am imploring you to allow Amharic Wikipedia to opt-out of the global sysop program. It was never necessary for our wikipedia to begin with, and the idea of Amharic-illiterate sysops wading in and performing sysop actions just because they can, has proved highly unpopular, yet this has happened again only today. The last time I asked this in August, I was told I must ask the Amharic community first. The result was that there is universal and strong agreement among Amharic-speaking users that Amharic literacy is a requirement to be made a sysop, or for any sysop actions to be performed on Amharic wikipedia. Please remove Amharic Wikipedia from the unwanted global sysop program that has been imposed on us. Thank you. Codex Sinaiticus 16:48, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

Has something changed since the previous request? Your community can of course decide whether it want global sysops enabled or not, but project-wide decisions like this should probably include more than just two or three people. Jafeluv 17:09, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

It seems certain people are actively trying to make this as unnecessarily difficult and as big a hassle as possible. Please be assured, NOBODY on the Amharic wikipedia wants non-Amharic sysops from Germany or wherever waltzing in and trying to change things they don't understand. What will it possibly take to demonstrate that to you? It should be a simple matter to fix, yet the amount of obstacles being thrown up suggests there seems to be some wider agenda at play here. The purpose and scope of global sysops was never intended with this kind of thing in mind. The local sysops do know Amharic and can take care of everything there quite well, thank you. Looking at the previous request, the concern was that three people's opinions may not be enough to demonstrate project-wide consensus. I'm not aware of any strict requirements on how many votes would be sufficient (I think there's an ongoing RFC on the issue), but I'm sure it will be considered if you can gather some more opinions from active participants. It would also be good to have an English translation of the discussion (although you could set up a vote and just translate the "oppose"/"support" sections if you don't want to keep translating every participant's comments) since as you've noticed not many people here can read Amharic and Google Translate doesn't support the language yet. May I remind you once again that I opposed Global sysops from the outset for precisely this very reason. However I was assured that this very kind of problem would never arise because the purpose of global sysops was ostensibly only to monitor small neglected wikis, not the active ones like Amharic wikipedia. I was also assured that should any problem ever arise, getting off of global sysops would be a simple matter. Both of these assurances are now revealed to have been mere cajolery. We have also long had a policy established by consensus that Amharic literacy is a prerequisite to be a sysop there. The sysop tools are not given to anyone who has not even bothered to learn how to read the language, for obvious reasons. Codex Sinaiticus 18:10, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

  Done - few active users are active on that wiki so we can not expect high levels of community participation. I'm therefore per Codex Sinaiticus' request removing access to global sysops on amwiki.
