Administrator access

Patriot Kor@tlywikipedia

Hi dears, I would like to inform you that my current tenure as an administrator will come to an end on March 3. However, I am interested in continuing my role as an administrator. There is much work to be done. I kindly request information regarding the duration of the limited dates during which I will be able to serve in temporarily. Thank you for your attention to this matter.--Patriot Kor (talk) 15:36, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

@Patriot Kor: You will need to open a new local discussion for us to renew your adminship; your most recent adminship request seems to be from September last year, which is when you were granted your current temporary adminship. Please open a new discussion (it should be open for at least 7 days, but no more than two weeks) and come back after that. EPIC (talk) 15:41, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Dear @EPIC Thank you for providing me with the detailed information. I will start the new discussion immediately after my term of office ends. Well, when it comes to the question. How long will our temporary admin role last? Patriot Kor (talk) 15:49, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
It mainly depends on the amount of votes, but since your last adminship has been six months, you would likely be granted six months or longer. EPIC (talk) 15:54, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Not done Please also consider that any opposition requires a full discussion. Thanks for your understanding, closing this request as not done, you can submit a new request here after at least 1-week local discussion. Best --Superpes15 (talk) 16:22, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

Stefán Örvar Sigmundsson@iswikibooks

The project is very inactive. I have recently changed well over a thousand messages on translatewiki.net which concern the categorisation of the project, for instance tracking categories which MediaWiki expects to exist. I intend to fix some discrepancies as well as tidy up unneeded local messages. I do not expect that I will want to extend the user access level beyond the 3-month period. Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson (talk) 10:11, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Not sure if this can be actioned on. The post was made more than three weeks ago, and we normally don't grant requests which have been open for longer than two weeks. EPIC (talk) 10:24, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Done Granted for 3 months to expire on 2024-6-3. , by another steward. EPIC (talk) 10:57, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
According to MVR and general practices, discussions should remain open for a minimum of 7 days, with the option to extend up to 14 days, but not beyond. I mistakenly granted permission on iswikibooks just a few seconds before the EPICs comment due to misreading the date. Since the time difference is negligible, I believe there shouldn't be any issue with that. I welcome any second opinions on the matter. ~ Yahya (talkcontribs) 11:05, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Gwikor_Frank@kw.wikipedia

This is a usual level of engagement for our small wiki. We need at least one admin and I am the only one we have. Thanks. Gwikor Frank (talk) 15:33, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Granted for one year to expire on March 3, 2025. Thanks for your continued support of that project. – Ajraddatz (talk) 16:00, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Như Gây Mê@tlwikitionary

Wikitionary Tagalog currently has no sysop and no bureaucrat, I want to rebuild tlwt as well as prevent vandalism here (discussion has no votes, it's been 7 days Asia/Manila time, UTC+8) Halley luv Filipino ❤ 23:05, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

@Như Gây Mê: You have ~60 edits there and you're tl-2 speaker! What are the vandalisms that exist and that you would like to fix or prevent (that global sysops or steward cannot handle)? Thanks --Superpes15 (talk) 23:43, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
@Superpes15 ~60 edits doesn't say anything. I'm planning to develop this project beside cebwiki project. I'm currently living in the Philippines, although my Tagalog speaking is only tl-2, I'm trying to improve my Tagalog :) About the vandalisms, there's currently no vandalism there, but if there's some vandalism, I want to do fix or prevent it myself. :) Thanks Halley luv Filipino ❤ 03:04, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@Như Gây Mê: Thanks! I just want to understand why can't you improve the project without the sysop flag (what tasks can't you perform there to improve it)? Thanks Superpes15 (talk) 14:36, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@Superpes15 Personally, I don't want to ask anyone for too much help (especially GS), I only ask when it's really necessary. To clean up articles (especially articles unrelated to the project or spam). I can do it myself using tools of sysop :) Thanks Halley luv Filipino ❤ 10:23, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
This is not a good reply honestly. Everyone should ask for help when needed, and working alone is outside of our principles of collaborative community, if you have seen spam or anything else you can easily report it to the GS. What is the reason you don't want to report to the GS? Yesterday I assigned you the flag for 3 months on another small project (but in that case you were a native speaker and had 2 supports from the local community) and what if a GS came there to help? Superpes15 (talk) 10:33, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
I don't think "global sysop is enough" is a reason against granting flag. Adminship gives user a number of tools such as patrol and rollback, which are held by nobody by default. Therefore there is a usecase for adminship if any of the rights should be used.--GZWDer (talk) 06:58, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
@GZWDer: The problem is indeed not this one. The user has no relevant edit/activity on that project (last time I checked they had 60 edits), so they likely don't know practices or particular policies. They aren't a native speaker (but only tl-2), also they didn't provide a clear reason for the flag, while I - fore example - flagged them on another project (in which they're active and are a native speaker and had some supports) some days ago! We can't give flags like candy but they must have a clear reason! Superpes15 (talk) 00:06, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Superpes15: Is there a final conclusion here? I'm a bit hesitant considering that this mainly seems to be for skipping GSR (and tlwiktionary is such small that the few times it gets vandalism/spam, I don't really see that it will be any harder for global sysops to handle it), and the other work they are mentioning will likely not require admin tools. Also noticing their first edit was 6 February, the same day they opened their adminship discussion, so experience is a bit on the low end of the spectrum here. This, combined with no native Tagalog users having participated in the discussion either, makes me lean towards not granting, but I'm not opposed to this being granted if it's appropriate to do so. EPIC (talk) 21:15, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

For me it's a no (but I don't like hat collection - when they are not actually needed - in general). I was waiting for further inputs here. Superpes15 (talk) 21:18, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. In agreeance, and considering this has already been open for two weeks, I will let this stay opened for a few more days and mark it as not done if there are no further inputs. EPIC (talk) 21:27, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
Before I was elected a GS I had +sysop on sowiki, a project where I don't speak the language, to delete a series of mass copyvio uploads that GSs weren't able to effectively deal with. I support granting the right in cases like that: where is a definable need that is not being addressed by other processes. This is a more general ask for cleanup reasons, and on a project where the requesting user speaks the language at an intermediate level. It's possible to "rebuild" the project without +sysop, and I'd be concerned giving the right to a language learner who does not have experience on other tl-language projects. This would be different if they were active on tlwiki, for example, and could point to trust on that project. Or if people from that project voted. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 16:10, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Not done Per comments above, there does not appear to be a consensus to grant here. EPIC (talk) 20:05, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

As the Minangkabau Wiktionary continues to develop, we need additional admins to manage this Wikikato. Please make Ardzun an admin on Wikikato. Harditaher (talk) 04:31, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

@Harditaher: This adminship discussion seems to be over two months old. We sadly can't action when it is that old, so please open a new local discussion. It should be open for at least one week; if you want, you can let it be open for two weeks, but no more than that. Please come back after that, and there should be no problems granting. Doostdar@fawikibooks

Request for prolongation. --Doostdar (talk) 17:43, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

@Doostdar: Hi, if I'm reading this correctly, you opened your request on 6 February, which is 34 days ago. As the notice in this section says, we sadly can't grant if the discussion is that old. Thus, I would advise to open a new discussion; you can let it be open for 7 days at minimum, and if you want you can let it run for two or three weeks, but no more than that. So, please open a new discussion, come back and there should be no problems extending your adminship. Thanks. EPIC (talk) 17:56, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
The bit about 7 days isn't any strict policy - I don't see any issues with granting this. Giving the local community more time to comment seems like a good thing, within reason. – Ajraddatz (talk) 00:28, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
I don't see the seven days rule as too strict either (that's why we usually can let the discussion go for two or three weeks without problem), but 34 days feels a little much. But, I am open to opinions here, of course. EPIC (talk) 05:55, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
Done Granted for 2 years to expire on 2026-03-12. To prolong your (interface) adminship, please start another election a few days before your temporary access expires, and after a week post your request again to this page. Thanks.
Yep, no issue here, also it doesn't make sense to ask a long term sysop for creating a new request only because 1 month passed and the outcome is obviously however identical (leaving the project without a potential idle sysop). The task of the stewards is to allow communities to function as best as possible and not to act as notaries by applying the policies to the letter! On small projects is fine to wait a month to try gaining a certain consensus (since users are often inactive) imho. @Doostdar: Best and thanks for volunteering and, please, next time post here after 1-2 weeks to avoid issues like this one --Superpes15 (talk) 14:47, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

LesickaT@tpiwiktionary

I am currently studying Tok Pisin in Papua New Guinea and would like to help this project as I am learning the language. I have reached out to other people who have performed admin work in the past for this site and one of them referred me to this permission request.
There are no current admins and as my discussion stated, I would like to edit the front page to remove dead links and add links to category pages as they are created. There are also a few deadend and orphaned pages that need to be removed and "pages not connected" that either need to be connected or removed.

Hi @LesickaT:, first of all, thank you for wanting to help! I suggest to gain experience, given that your account is new. And, if I understand correctly, your main reason for requesting adminship was to edit the main page? The main page is currently only protected from non-confirmed users, meaning you are able to edit it without problems since your account is autoconfirmed. There is still a lot to do even as a "normal" user, and in the meantime, if you do stumble upon something which needs admin help, you are always free to ask global sysops or stewards (either through Global sysops/Requests for quick cleanups, or Steward requests/Miscellaneous for more complicated tasks). So, I suggest waiting a few months when you have gained more experience, and then apply again. Once again though; thank you for volunteering! EPIC (talk) 06:58, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
Not done No relevant experience and newly created user. Thanks for volunteering and please don't be discouraged by this outcome. --Superpes15 (talk) 14:49, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

I did not think to it. Should I contact them to make me an administrator or to dump on them a workload of administrative actions to execute on my behalf? Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson (talk) 12:05, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
If a wiki has local bureaucrats, we usually leave the task of adding new administrators to them. So, I suggest contacting them, and if they do not respond in a week or so, feel free to come back here and there shouldn't be a problem granting you adminship. EPIC (talk) 12:08, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
On hold I tried to reach the local 'crats. Let's wait for a week. Thanks --Superpes15 (talk) 14:53, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

Since local bureaucrats are now involved it is safe to assume that they will handle this once a request is placed in the correct place, for this reason closing this request as Not done. --Base (talk) 03:58, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

Ardzun@minwiktionary

Minangkabau community has voted for an additional admin. Please your help. Harditaher (talk) 04:55, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

I'm not sure about this one; this discussion doesn't seem to mention anything about Ardzun, nor do I see that they have accepted the nomination anywhere. Of course I might be wrong though (I don't speak the language) but I'll leave this to a more experienced steward. EPIC (talk) 17:47, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Question Question: Harditaher, I read that an old vote happened on 17 December 2023 regarding "Ardzun" with 9 supports. But regarding the above mentioned vote (6 supports), is it kind of confirmation of the previous vote or what? Especially since "Ardzun" username was not mentioned. --Alaa :)..! 09:22, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Sorry @علاء @EPIC, it is not mentioned by username but nick name "Juna". Should I add it in the paragraph?. Harditaher (talk) 03:48, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. Like I said I'm a bit unsure, so I will leave this to a more experienced steward than me. EPIC (talk) 09:06, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

I am also confused as to what is going on here. I am inclined to decline this request, but will give it a little more time in case someone understands what is going on. I came to the same points as the others. The vote that Alaa has found looks good to me except for 2 things: it looks like vote participants have probably been notified about it outside of Wiktionary, but at least they all seem to be active users so it is fine; as far as I can see Ardzun has never publicly agreed to hold the rights, their last Wiktionary namespace edit is in 2020, and user talk edit is even older than that. Although funnily enough there is no strict requirement for users to agree to be given rights, that is the general expectation nevertheless. The second vote is totally confusing, it is not clear why it was even made (except that perhaps to refresh the old one if there was never a request made here basing on it), and there is no obvious connection between the alias Juna and Ardzun. --Base (talk) 04:18, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

Not done Harditaher please:

  • Open new discussion/vote/nomination at Wikikato:Kadai kopi.
  • Write the username clearly, and include a link to the account, as happened in the old vote.
  • Let Ardzun explicitly states his approval of the nomination, whether by writing to the user talk page and the user responds to you there, and it is better for the user to clarify this within the new discussion.
  • Leave the discussion open for 1-2 weeks, and if there is consensus, please resubmit a request here

Best --Alaa :)..! 19:36, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

(I am an administrator on Hausa Wikipedia for the past years. I started the Hausa Wikiquote new language project and have being the major editor on the project. I want to keep managing and building the project as many other editors will start editing the page. ) Uncle Bash007 (talk) 09:02, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi Uncle Bash007; as far as I can see, Hausa Wikiquote is not yet open and is still in Incubator mode as far as I can see. We can't grant administrator rights on a project if it isn't open yet. Also, I see you have posted this request on the Hausa Wikipedia, which is a different project, and adminship discussions like this should most of the time be on the project in question. So, I suggest that once the Hausa Wikiquote has opened, open a local discussion there (it doesn't necessarily have to get any votes), come back after a week and there shouldn't be any problems granting you then. Thanks :) EPIC (talk) 09:14, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

@Lymantria and EPIC: Please reconsider. I am very active on Wikidata, and I mostly use the tools to view deleted items that were created by my bot. Abruptly desysoping me with about 10 minutes notice is shocking. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:39, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
I removed the tools based on the Wikidata inactivity policy, with confirmation from Lymantria, who is a bureaucrat. I cannot reinstate it now that it is removed, so that will be up to the bureaucrats at Wikidata. EPIC (talk) 11:45, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
@Mike Peel: Please consider that, as explained in the instructions above, "the rights will not be restored by stewards once they are removed". The removal occurred due to the inactivity policy (so it's an "automatic" removal) and therefore you must go through a new local RfA/local processes. Thanks for your understanding! Superpes15 (talk) 12:29, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarifications. Please consider waiting for more than 10 minutes in the future to give time to respond. Mike Peel (talk) 13:39, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
I'd recommend discussing this locally to set up a page to notify/send admin a reminder or give admins some wait time. Discussion here might only confuse stewards in how they interpret the local policies. I am not really a big fan of strict inactivity policy either when we are all volunteers here, but things like these happen.-- BRP ever 13:48, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
I'll follow up on this locally, an automatic bot reminder or something will probably work well on Wikidata. I don't blame anyone here, I just suggest that there might not need to be so much of a rush to action for non-emergency cases like these. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:01, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Yep agree on waiting a bit and also on sending a reminder before asking for removal, a bit of flexibility, if the user is (for example) active is always good in these cases :) Superpes15 (talk) 16:18, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

That means the activity requirement will be evaluated every January, and before reporting, there should be a local discussion. ~ Yahya (talkcontribs) 18:49, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
@Bodhisattwa da, did I interpret the policy correctly? ~ Yahya (talkcontribs) 18:55, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
There is no need for a local discussion (any user can directly apply for cancellation of administration for administrators with less than 100 resources). The 100 edits have not been made in 2023 and nothing has changed regarding their activity in the meantime. --Ameisenigel (talk) 18:56, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
I don't know how exactly the policy should be interpreted either, but it seems to be clear that the policy seems to say that admins require at least 100 edits in a calendar year, which doesn't seem to be the case (six edits last year). EPIC (talk) 19:03, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
It appears that any bn.wikisource user can seek removal of permissions only after a decision has been made locally: "any user can directly apply for cancellation of administration for administrators with less than 100 resources based on the community's decision" - however the term "community decision" isn't very clear. It should either refer to the policy or to the discussion in which an admin's activity is being discussed. ─ Aafī (talk) 19:07, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
As a native Bengali speaker, my understanding is that the phrase 'সম্প্রদায়ের সিদ্ধান্তের ভিত্তিতে' implies that the decision of the local community is necessary prior to any request for the removal of rights here. But the sentence should be written more clearly. ~ Yahya (talkcontribs) 19:23, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
Just like Aafi I interpreted "community decision" in this case to be the local policy (I took a quick look at the policy before removing), but either way these removal requests should probably be left to users who can speak the language of the project or is an active user in it to avoid fuss like this. I'm not going to reinstate the flags right now because the last part of the policy is unclear, but either way the 100 edits/year requisite does not seem to be met here. EPIC (talk) 19:35, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
Hi EPIC,
the local policy (bn:s:উইকিসংকলন:প্রশাসক#প্রশাসকত্ব_বাতিল_প্রক্রিয়া) is this:
1. If an admin doesn't do at least 100 edits (any type of edits e.g. admin action, general edits etc) in one year, then we can consider him/her inactive.
2. If an admin is inactive, to remove his/her sysop right, there should be community consensus. (i.e. to get community consensus, propose it on bn:s:উইকিসংকলন:লিপিশালা)
3. And then if there is community consensus, anyone can submit a request here on meta.
I am sorry but local policy is not fully followed in this case (yes, step no. 1 is met but step no. 2 is missing). আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 23:34, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. I would recommend starting a new local discussion; if there is consensus to remove, this can remain as it is, and if there is consensus to keep, I will happily reinstate the flags. Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience I may have caused here. EPIC (talk) 23:39, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
@EPIC, Thanks. I will start a discussion shortly & will report here back. Give us 2/3 days. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 23:48, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

I checked local policy before acting (and also Admin activity review/Local inactivity policies#Wikisources, where this last part was not added until today), but the last part was not entirely clear until now. This is currently being discussed - please wait. And @Ameisenigel: we should probably leave these requests to users who can speak the language unless the inactivity policy is clear. EPIC (talk) 11:17, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
I would be happy to leave these requests to local users if they would take care of this. From my experience there are many wikis where nobody takes care of the inactivity rules. Since these wikis do not fall under the AAR inactive admins would keep their rights forever. --Ameisenigel (talk) 11:25, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

I have contacted to an active local admin about this case. MathXplore (talk) 01:22, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
I am Tomzo, one of the administrators of ja.Wikibooks.
I am honestly confused by this request.
I understand that each Wikimedia project is allowed to have its own autonomy and is encouraged to operate under that autonomy. I believe that such a request at a higher level, such as META-WIKI, is unnecessary unless it is contrary to the principles of the Wikimedia project, for example, if the results of discussions by participants are not properly implemented by administrators. Therefore, the content of this request should be left to the autonomy of ja.Wikibooks.
The person making this request may have raised this issue at ja:b:Wikibooks:管理者の辞任#利用者:かげろん_2 and received no response, so he/she may have asked for a response here, but I would ask him/her to consider why no one responded there.
For the participants of the ja.Wikibooks community, the failure to follow "this" rule is in itself harmless in the normal course of activities. The rules are there to facilitate the project in the first place, not for the value of whether they are followed or not.And also I find it very odd that such a proposal was made by a member who does not participate in the general article writing activities of ja.Wikibooks.
As a member of the ja.Wikibooks community, I strongly object to the treatment of community participants being discussed here and hope this case is dismissed.--Tomzo (talk) 20:45, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
If you believe me or not, I am a big fan of the autonomy of individual Wikimedia projects. In this case there is a local policy that has been approved by the local community. This policy needs to be respected as long as the local community has not decided to change this policy. If jawikibooks community wants to change this policy they can do so. And then everyone will follow the new policy. Please show us if we have misunderstood the current local policy. I would be also interested in knowing how it helps your project if a user who has not edited since April 2021 keeps their advanced rights. --Ameisenigel (talk) 22:13, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
If you claim to respect the autonomy in ja.wikibooks, then you should cancel this proposal and return to the discussion in ja.wikibooks. Then, you should call on the participants of ja.wikibooks (of course, since ja.wikibooks is positioned as "a project of wikibooks in Japanese", the discussion will be conducted in Japanese) and ask them whether your argument is valid or not. To decide anything about the operation of ja.wikibooks here would be to deprive the participants of their right to self-governance without knowing where matters concerning them are being handled. If the resulting treatment is contrary to the principles of the Wikimedia Project, it is not too late to discuss it again here.--Tomzo (talk) 20:28, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
I was the one who started the local discussion at the appropriate venue and for the required amount of time. It is not my fault if no one participates in that discussion. --Ameisenigel (talk) 22:04, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
Finally someone participated in the local discussion and explained why the rights should not be removed. Hence I withdraw this request. --Ameisenigel (talk) 21:19, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

{{done}} and many thanks for their service. EPIC (talk) 13:01, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I skirted the line of 250 edits a few times, but overall I managed to stay above that line until now. Seeing my sysop bit removed because I dipped briefly to 249 live edits, because I prioritised job hunting these last two weeks over editing Wikipedia feels like a kick in the chin. Sumurai8 (talk) 18:19, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
I've reinstated the admin rights of Sumurai8. This request was made by a banned user, without the technical means to properly check if the 250 edits threshold is met. A user must conduct 250 edits, not have 250 live edits. The rights where removed without conducted basic due diligence, causing a serious non-compliance with our local policy. Namely the removal of admin right without formal grounds. This I don't take lightly, especially because it's the second time that Stewards erroneously removed admin tools on the request of this user. Please refrain from removing advanced permissions based on the request of a banned user. I can't emphasize the seriousness of this incident enough. Natuur12 (talk) 18:57, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
I apologize for this and had no idea this had previously happened - I checked the contributions accordingly with local policy but somehow still made a mistake here. Hi EPIC, in my opinion you are not the one who should apologize. The one who should is The Banner, who knows nl.wikipedia's rules much better than you do, who is proud to still be that wiki's vulture and who is the one who initiated this process. By the way, those apologies won't come, that's for sure. Best regards, Apdency (talk) 08:17, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
