Currently, 3 users have the researcher user right on enwiki, but the right does not appear in the list of alterable rights on meta. This is what I see with my account, which has WMF Trust and Safety rights:
I think this may be a bug in config somewhere, unless I'm just looking in the wrong place.
@jrbs - I think this is just a procedural thing, do you want us to remove this group from those users?
This is likely the 'group only exists locally' thing; the workflow is:
Grant self local steward, remove locally, revoke local steward
Yup that's the "bug", just checking if this is something that needs to actually be done.
I think that's fine. Rights were applied by the WMF years ago, seems that they were intended to have been removed years ago ... I can't imagine they're needed anymore.

FYI, if you want to remove all members from a group, you can also let sysadmins run emptyUserGroup.php instead.
Also, you may want to file a task to remove the group from English Wikipedia, if necessary.
