The FN P90 is a selective fire personal defence wappen (PDW) designed an manufacturt bi FN Herstal in Belgium.[9] The P90's name is taken frae 1990, the year it wis introduced.[4] The P90 wis creatit in response tae NATO requests for a replacement for 9×19mm Parabellum fireairms; it wis designed as a compact but pouerful fireairm for vehicle crews, operators o crew-served wappens, support personnel, special forces an coonter-terrorist groups.[9][10]

The P90 wis designed bi FN in conjunction wi the FN Five-seven pistol an 5.7×28mm ammunition.[4] Development o the P90 began in 1986, an production commenced in 1990, whaurupon the 5.7×28mm ammunition wis redesigned an shortened.[1] A modifee'd version o the P90 wi a magazine adaptit tae uise the new ammunition wis introduced in 1993, an the Five-seiven pistol wis subsequently introduced as a companion wappen uisin the same 5.7×28mm ammunition.[11]

The P90 wis developit an initially mercatit as a personal defence wappen, but it coud an aa be considered a submachine gun or compact assault rifle.[12] Featurin a compact bullpup design wi an integratit reflex sicht an fully ambidextrous controls, the P90 is an unconventional wappen wi a futuristic appearance.[12] Its design incorporates several innovations sic as a unique tap-muntit magazine an FN's sma caliber, heich velocity 5.7×28mm ammunition.[12]

The P90 is currently in service wi militar an polis forces in ower 40 kintras ootthrou the warld.[13] In the Unitit States, the P90 is in uise wi ower 200 law enforcement agencies, includin the U.S. Secret Service.[14] The staundart P90 is restrictit tae militar an law enforcement customers, but syne 2005, a semi-automatic carbine version haes been affered tae civeelian shooters as the PS90.[15]
