Managing the balance between mental health disclosure and performance at work calls for the expertise of HR professionals. Khairil Baharudin IHRP-CP, SHRM-CP, Assoc CIPD, MSHRI, CHRA®, CEI-KAH, AWI and HR Business Partner Lead at a leading tech firm, recently shared his thoughts and experiences on this issue. Under the Tripartite Guidelines for Fair Employment Practices, employers should not ask job applicants to declare their mental health conditions unless it is a job-related requirement. However, employees with mental health conditions may consider disclosing their condition to their managers or HR. Khairil highlighted the persistent stigma and taboo surrounding mental health conditions in the workplace. Many employees, due to the conservatism of the environment, hesitate to disclose their mental health conditions. He shared that in his experience, some employees felt that team dynamics and morale changed after they disclosed their mental health condition, which could sometimes manifest in performance issues. However, fostering an open conversation where transparency is key can significantly alleviate these concerns. For HR professionals and managers, it is crucial to reinforce the importance of collaboration and support, ensuring employees feel safe and valued. While mental health disclosure can be challenging, with the right approach towards awareness and education from HR, it can lead to a more compassionate, inclusive and productive workplace. 🎧 For more insights on this topic, listen to the discussion on Channel NewsAsia's podcast "Work It": https://lnkd.in/gH7T2Z6R #IHRP #WorkIt #MentalHealthDisclosure

About us
The Institute for Human Resource Professionals (IHRP) is the HR professional body, set up by the tripartite partners: the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF). IHRP is the only HR professional body in Singapore authorised to implement the national HR credentials, which is known as the IHRP Certification. IHRP has the goal of setting the HR standards of excellence and enabling human capital development in enterprises. Through the IHRP Certification, IHRP aims to enhance the competencies of HR professionals, as well as create developmental and professional pathways for them. This will professionalise and strengthen the HR profession practice in Singapore, allowing HR professionals to be key enablers in their organisations. Our 15-member board of directors come from diverse backgrounds. The Chairperson is Mrs Deborah Ong, Retired Partner, PwC Singapore. Why IHRP? Against the backdrop of rapid business disruption, it is essential that organisations develop their human capital, so they can be future-ready and thrive amid economic shifts. HR is the enabler that will help organisations rise to meet this challenge. But for it to be successful, HR must itself be future-ready. It must focus on maximising human capital and contribute to business growth. IHRP aims to equip HR professionals and their organisations with progressive and forward-looking people practices to meet this challenge.

On 10 July, Institute for Human Resource Professionals (IHRP) hosted and engaged with 17 tertiary-level students from the Temasek Foundation-funded Leadership Enrichment and Regional Networking (LEaRN) Programme. This session aimed to cultivate the students' understanding of leadership and its role in promoting sustainability. Ms. Karina Kuok, IHRP's Director of Strategic Partnerships, provided a deep dive into IHRP's solutions and programmes, showcasing how HR can drive positive change and sustainable practices.
