Own goal

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An own goal, also called a self goal, is where a player does something where they or their team scores a goal on themselves. This gives points for the opposing team. Most often when a football player kicks a ball into their own net or goal. It can also happen in hockey, basketball and hurling.

It is also used as a metaphor when someone tries something which goes wrong and benefits the opposition. [1]
